Say what you will about the goofy Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon, but its complementary toyline from Bandai was the best. Those action figures are fondly remembered - if not more so - than the animated series itself.
The toyline is also remembered for a number of cancelled and unreleased items, too. There was the giant 8-inch "Talking Mega Man", vehicles from season 2, and a trio of figures based on different suits that Mega Man wore throughout the show. Images of some of these toys have bubbled up over the years... but to date, we don't know anyone that actually owns them in any capacity. Samples, prototypes - nothing.
More recently, however, a video from Bandai's 1995 Toy Fair offerings has come to light that proudly displays TWO cancelled toys: the 8-inch talking Mega Man and a previously unknown, unannounced playset. You can see them in action in the video above (42:07). You gotta love the host's very, uh, colorful take on "PlAsMa PoWerrrr..."
I miss everything about this show. Sigh...
Wow, good find! I'm gonna have to give this whole thing a watch. The canceled play set actually seems kinda fun. Also, I really miss those 2in figures.. they had lots of characters and fun poses. And X2 just hanging on the wall like it owns the place. Things sure were different back then.
ReplyDeleteThis video is surprisingly fun to watch. Lots of neat stuff here.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I always wanted a few of these interchangeable-weapon Bandai Mega Man figures when I was a kid. They always seemed like a super-cool thing to have and play with. Never ended up being able to find any of them, but I would always look for them at the toy stores.
You can still nab them off ebay.
DeleteThe second commercial doesn't sound like Dr. Wily was voiced by Scott McNeil. Do I just not remember what he sounds like?
ReplyDeleteNo. It's definitely not Scott.
DeleteHuh. I wonder why they didn't get Scott McNeil to voice Dr. Wily for it?
DeleteBandai should create D-Arts figures of the Ruby-Spears Characters..Mega Man and Roll especially. Kotobukia should do model kits of them too.
ReplyDeleteWe can dream!
DeleteThat was fun to watch. I cracked up a little when Cut Man's blade went flying. Good catch. Ahh could you guys imagine if they'd made X, Vile and Spark Mandril?
ReplyDeleteThey actually did release one of the vehicles from Season 2. Over the years I have seen a few on E Bay. I think the only two things they didn't release was the one vehicle, the playset, and the 8 inch figure. I have Mega Man, Protoman, and Rush sealed. I also one mini set of Roll and Cutman sealed. I orginally wanted the figures when they first came out but even then everything was very hard to find. My parents couldn't find them for me. So when I was older I was able to get them from E Bay in the early 2000's. Strangely a seller from Italy had old stock of the figures still sealed so I was able to get the figures from that seller. At the time it was like $40 each. Now? For this lot it would be around $300+
