Seemingly out of nowhere last night, Capcom allowed select online streamers to try out an unannounced card battling game simply known as "Project Battle". It's an action-oriented card game featuring all kinds of famous Capcom characters including, of course, our favorite blue Maverick Hunter – X! More info and tons and tons of artwork after the jump!
X's design in Project Battle |
(Note: Project Battle is NOT the upcoming Mega Man X mobile project. It is wholely different.)
Not many official details are currently known about Project Battle. However, according to streamer and YouTuber Maximilian_DOOD, the game currently has no announced release platform or release date and that the stream was to give people a taste of the game and gauge reaction to it. Max also stated that he had played an earlier build of the game a couple of weeks ago.

Max also stated that he had played an earlier build of the game a couple of weeks ago.
Based on the footage that was streamed, Project Battle appears to be more action-oriented than some other card games. From the start, you choose your main character from a roster of Capcom characters from different franchises to do battle: Mega Man X, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, and Darkstalkers. X was the only playable character from the Mega Man franchise and the only X series character represented. Although other X series characters were depicted in cards, you canonly play as X. There's no telling if more playable characters will be added.
Here's a closer look at X's design. For one reason or another, it is very doll-like in appearance:
After picking a character, you're then asked choose from 3 "ultimate skills" for your main character. For X these were as follows: Heart Tank ("Gives +7HP to a friendly unit") Charge Shot ("Gives, when HP is boosted Gain +1 Attack to all friendly units") and Gaea Armor from X5 ("gives <veil> to all friendly units.")
After that, you need to build a 30-card deck using battle cards. These have a variety of attacks and effects. Battle cards also feature various characters and enemies from many Capcom franchises and PLENTY of Mega Man X characters and villains. Once you create your deck, you're ready to face an opponent.
While streamers were only allowed to show certain modes, the main menu did show the following options: Events, Free Match, Room Match, Hero Stories, Chronicles and Practice. It'll be interesting to see what X's story in this game involves!

The full basic rules on how to play the game can be found in the video below courtesy of Duel Links Meta on YouTube:
If it wasn't apparent enough, pretty much every character here has been glammed-up with brand-new artwork. They look great and they even show battle damage during a match!
It's also worth pointing out that, for the most part, each character is voiced. These are newly recorded lines, too. It sounds like Ted Sroka might be reprising X once again after his stint in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. Just speculation there; nothing is confirmed.
The animations in the game are coming along nicely. The finer details look good, too. X's stage background featured an abandoned Ride Armor being reclaimed by nature. Music-wise, his theme was a more orchestral sounding remix of the Sky Lagoon theme from Mega Man X4.

So who else is showing up in this game from the Mega Man X series? While this by no means a complete list of X series characters, these are all the cards we managed to spot in various streams last night. Thanks to Lord Saturn, StupidStudiosN, ELBD and Reploid_21XX for finding and sending us some of these images! Check 'em out!
Zero received a slight re-design as well

Mavericks:
Nice little Middy cameo in this one.

And finally a few more of X:

Hopefully we'll have more to share on this game in the not too distant future! For now you can check out a few hours of gameplay over on Maximilian Dood's channe. What do you guys think? Would this be something you would try out?
I haven't taken a look at everything yet, but it seems like X is the only one with a weird redesign. And he looks really odd. I probably wouldn't mind little changes to the armor but the proportion changes on his body are really strange.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this design isn't used for the MMX mobile game...
very likely won't be used for anything but this game, since it is specifically this crossover game's artstyle and not something about Mega Man in general.
DeleteI'm not to fond of games that are focused on a multiplayer experience, so I'll pass on this one. However, I'm liking X's design with that halo. Really fits him as a character and taking Mega Man lore in consideration.
ReplyDeleteHis stomach looks weird though...
I like everyone's design BUT X. Jeeez.... Zero is fine Axl is decent, Colonel, General, Vile all that. X though.............
ReplyDeleteWhy did they make his hips so large?
ReplyDeleteHis hips would look more or less proportional and masculine if his belly wasn’t replaced with a ball joint. Ends up giving him that peculiar kinda ‘hourglass’ figure.
DeleteJust a really weird stylistic choice that I don’t particularly dig, personally.
they wanted to be fair, since zero got such nice tits
DeleteThose flat orb nips on Zero's chest armor is not a fair trade for that whole stomach/waist/hip heck even big eyes (which by themselves are fine but in totality adds to the uh "effect"), they even have X kinda posing oddly in some cases. X is as, if not more feminine than most "females" on this page, he has slit like uh LEDs on the crotch, curvy but thin and elegant thighs and everything.
DeleteMega Woman X, those hips don't lie
ReplyDeleteTotally. Why is he the only one like this?
DeleteI really do not like the redesign. Leave X alone...
ReplyDeleteIf Mega Man X was in Overwatch
ReplyDeleteX is a girl here!? OH HELL NO!
ReplyDeleteI don’t think he’s supposed to be a girl, but man...that is one weird design. Really skinny limbs with (normally? accurately?) proportioned boots and hands...he looks kinda emaciated.
DeleteNot battle-ready at all with that body, no sir.
Zero, on the other hand, is lookin’ fine. Still a darn disappointing design for X, though.
Guess I'm the only one concerned about Gate not being in the game.
DeleteCan’t say I’m really diggin’ that X redesign.
ReplyDeleteZero and Vile look thick, which I wholeheartedly approve of, but some elements of X’s design are a little bit odd lookin’...not exactly a fan of those skinny limbs and ball-joint in place of his belly.
That looks like a major weak spot, come on! At least make the armor cover it a little bit further!
Game itself looks like it could be interesting, but I hope that Mega Man Classic characters are added at some point, too (and that Rock and Blues’ designs aren’t horribly butchered, that’d make me one unhappy camper)
Also, what’s up with X’s...uh, ‘crotch light’? I’m not sure I wanna know what that’s for.
DeleteThen again...
Obviously it's to pair with Zero's "chest" lights. :p
DeleteGreen Biker Dude or bust!
ReplyDeleteHear hear!
DeleteI can't say I like the redesign for X, the original is enough. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, Capcom. If you MUST use an alternate design, then the 2014 Keisuke Mizuno design should suffice.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I CAN say that I like the attention they are giving to the lesser characters, especially Colonel and General.
I do like how X has the Cyber-Elf halo he sported in the Zero series and I'm also not inherently opposed to the idea of making Reploids look distinctly different from regular humans. It's kind of weird that X is the only one who gets this sort of redesign though.
ReplyDeleteThe flavour text for all the X cards is oddly interesting. It implies X and Zero are from the ancient past, and their civilization has already been wiped out. Meanwhile the Repliforce is formed in the modern day to stop a coming disaster of equally ancient origins.
ReplyDeleteWhy does X look like he's wearing booty shorts?
ReplyDeleteZero had a vision of him almost turning into whatever the heck X is and held his head in pain at the thought.
ReplyDeleteArtstyle in general looks great, though ithink this is the most androgynous X has ever looked. kinda confused about the hyper-bulky thighs on one of Vile pics. Aside from that, great pics. And it's nice to see a lot of new illustrations of the characters, including the maverick boss and rivals.
ReplyDeleteThe sleeping iris artworks looks wonderful. I see they choose Alia x5-7 design, which is nice, though i would like to see a pic of her X8 design in that style.
Also that's one HUGE Z-buster.
don't know if i'll play a lot of the game itself if it's multiplayer, though. i will sill try it.
I gotta take a look at the street fighter illustrations, too.
The X redesign is just... odd.
ReplyDeleteWow. Probably THE worst X design ever conceived. Someone should be fired and beaten.
ReplyDeletethat's excessive, even though i agree that this is my least favoriteof all X design so far, wishing bad things to someone because of it is overkill.
Deletei gotta take one second to mention that... Nice booty on that "2" card.
DeleteBoi, Vile looks dummy T H I C C
ReplyDeleteI like these even though I prefer the original designs.
ReplyDeleteThat's ma boi Green Biker Dude!
ReplyDeleteseriousely, good to see pictures of all thoses mavericks.
He appears a fembot, but I love this style he look androgynous like classic Mega Man and EXE.
ReplyDeleteDat Hartman Hips. Like a BJD (Ball-jointed doll).
I’m not sure I’d describe Classic Mega Man as androgynous. He’s pretty clearly made to look like a cute little boy, but I think I know what you’re getting at.
DeleteMany of the cards art are very cool, but X's overall design really is buuuuuuuuuuuullshit. It's horrible, ugh! What's with that huge ball joint for a stomach? Big no for me. Keisuke Mizuno's latest rendition of X and the Ver. Ke designs are the best and definitive ones for me. I even dislike the manga's uber realistic designs, but oh man... I'm a big X fan but they test me when they come up with this BS.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why they have 2 different set of Artwork for the cards. I mean there's the regular version which is what they should look like. And a thicc version. How consistent lol
ReplyDeleteLove the art for this game, makes me wanna give it a try even tho I don't really play crap like this. that X design tho is LOL
ReplyDeletei hope we get the artwork without the text and game interface someday.
ReplyDeleteThere will be, in the game at least. From what we saw of the alpha footage if you click on a card it shows the artwork without the text & UI but streamers that did get to play it only clicked on a few, you can see it with the illustrations of Magma Dragoon & Bubble Crab above for example.
DeleteWell, I don't care what this is. I won't be supporting it.
ReplyDeleteI just hope they aren't doing what I think they are.
i don't know what you think they are doing, but obviousely they are not. except if you where thinking "making a game that look pretty nice on it's own as far as card games go, but has a freaking weird X design. A seriousely weird design" which i doubt you are thinking since you explicitely know that they're doing that.
DeleteI for one, welcome the incredible meme potential of that weird-ass design. so many things can be done, so much parody gold.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually more concerned about the more mechanical face and the big blue glowing eyes than the limbs.
ReplyDeleteThoses kind of feature work when it's just a cool effect for a one illustration thing (like that illustration of rock from a while ago), or a temporary state, like rock's eyes glowing when a launch his final in smash bross. But it feel strange as a permanent design, as it makes his eyes less emotional, which in my opinion does'nt fit with a sentient robot with free-will like X.
It work here with the other characters since they retain they only have glowing pupils and retains otherwise human faces, and thus remains expressive, but on X they overdid it.
That's only my opinion, of course.
X has himself some womanly hips. LOL! The cards look great! I really dig the detail with many of these.
ReplyDeleteWow! This design of X they gave looks strikingly like the unfinished drawing I did many years ago: It was a drawing of one of my female classmates from grade school in the style of Megaman X, with parts of the legs, arms, and hips redesign to be more feminine; it was the basis of a fan comic in my head set in the X-series of games that never got past the brainstorming part. What makes it most shocking for me is how this is design is almost the exact same as my drawing, and if I ever find it I'll show it one of these days.
ReplyDeleteThere...are some pretty nice fan-art of it, actually.

i find it better than the original in sumomo's style (3rd link), maybe because the limbs does'nt look as skinny related to the rest.
I'm liking the artwork for the Maverick bosses. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I'm gonna miss the X8 Alia design since they went with the X5-7 look. Iris looks fine enough but JEEZ, X's lower half looks like he's gone through his entire life in Atrophy. Get that boy a sandwich, he's all bodysuit and bones under that armor.
ReplyDeleteYikes, not liking the new X design at all. It just looks very off and disproportionate. The other characters look fine though.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm the only one concerned about Gate not being in the game.
ReplyDeletemaybe he will be, or he is but the streamer just did'nt get a chance to screencap him.
DeleteGate but no Sigma? How dare? >:O
DeleteIm sick of card games
ReplyDeleteNo more please
