Kazuhiro Tsuchiya Talks About the Possibility of "Rockman X9"

Yesterday, Rockman 11 producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya held a press conference in Taiwan to introduce the game to the Taiwanese media. After his presentation, GNN and other members of the press had the chance to ask Tsuchiya some questions. Among topics covered, Tsuchiya actually had a few words to say about a hypothetical Rockman X9.

Before digging into Tsuchiya's X9 comments, here's a few interesting tidbits of note from the Q&A session:

  • The goal with Rockman 11 is to create a new benchmark for Rockman games for the next 10 years.
  • The game can be completed without using the gear system.
  • Rockman 11 is running in Capcom's  MT Framework engine.
  • No Rush adapters in this game.

And now the part that you're here for: Rockman X9. What's the story, Tsuchiya?

Media: Before the revelation of Rockman 11, Rockman Classics Collection came out and was thought to be a touchstone. As of now, Rockman X also has a Rockman X Anniversary Collection. If both Rockman 11 and Rockman X Anniversary Collection succeed, will we have a chance to see a Rockman X9 or a new Rockman X release?
Tsuchiya: Right now we need to complete the development of Rockman 11 and gather feedback after it has been successfully released. Regarding the massive spread of rumors that Rockman X9 is in development, there is no such thing.
Media: So can we comprehend that there are no plans for Rockman X9's development?
Tsuchiya: I understand everyone is looking forward to the birth of an X9, but right now there is no way to verify. Of course, we can't say we have been doing nothing; we are actively and carefully monitoring the reactions from our gamers.
Actually, Rockman 11's birth is the result of the volume of voices from our gamers. The collection that came before it got very good results and feedback. This is a very convincing point, and helps back us up in striving for the approval of a new game development project.

Rather ambiguous comments if you ask me. Obviously, Tsuchiya is not going to confirm X9 is in development this soon. However, the fact that he said, "we can't say we have been doing nothing" implies that they are thinking about it or even doing some pre-production work. Ultimately, though, Tsuchiya and his crew need to show strong sales from Rockman 11 and Rockman X Anniversary Collection 1+2 to get the greenlight from Capcom's top men.

  1. Translation: We want to do it, we are doing some early work but we need to show the execs that there is market for it, buy Mega Man 11 and the X Collection if you want it to happen.

  3. It's really annoying that we gotta have tests to get new games for Mega Man.

Watch it outlive the RE Engine.

  7. It is very clear that they have something in the works, but aren't going full steam until Mega Man 11's success is confirmed. That's fine with me, because I know I already have Mega Man 11 pre-ordered.

  8. Probably not in development, but in "active stasis" or something of such magnitude.

If MM11 is "the benchmark of Mega Man games for the next 10 years", then X9 is more or less next-in-line in terms of which game comes next.

  9. They should contact the people who were working Mega Man X corrupted and collaborate, just like sega did with sonic mania and christian whitehead.

  10. After the backlash Capcom got from the cancellation of Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3, they will likely never admit to another Mega Man being in development until development is almost done and they're damn well sure it's going to be released.

  11. I already have Mega Man 11 with the Amiibo preordered. And I just bought Rockman X Anniversary Collections 1 and 2 off of E Bay. Just waiting for them to come in the mail

  12. I would rather have Maverick Hunter X2 than Megaman X9

  13. I don't understand these developers and companies. It's like they are voluntarily putting their hands over their eyes and ears ignoring the fact that PEOPLE DO WANT FUCKING X9 SINCE FUCKING FOREVER, but NOOOOOOOOO, they still have to "analyze the data and how the stupid collections do". Jesus fucking christ. As an X series super fan, I am losing my patience with these guys. I'll go stare at my Megaman X merchandise collection to calm down now.

    1. Because Megaman X8 and MHX have good quality but still sell very low in Japan. Who knows how does X9 sell?

    2. I agree with Furanshi6.(Although buddy try to tone down on the language.) Look I'm a huge Dragon Ball, Naruto, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon and Dc comics fan..My brother is the MegaMan X nerd... particularly for Zero. He introduced me to the series and it is pretty nice i must say...what I do agree is that Capcom IS giving us a load of *Bull* by saying what are probably lies...I can't wait for X9 it would be the perfect gift for my brothers birthday come winter. We played X4 X5 X6 on PlayStation, The Zero series in gba, and Maverick Hunter X on the PSP...all great games. What Capcom should is give us an anime of MegaMan X/Zero. They are so deserving for one...(Day of Sigma proved it..). Who here agrees with me ?

    3. Capcom has to weight the pros and cons of development compared to things like expenses. Will the game make them enough profit for them to invest the time into making it? What market will this game do best in? Are there other games that they could be making instead that would sell just as well and cost less to develop? Why spend X dollars when they could spend 1/10th on a different type of game when it will make just as much money, if not more so because it's what is most popular at the time?

There is more to deciding to make a game then just "oh man, the fans really want this game!" in this day and age, unfortunately. At the end of the day, no one is going to sign up to make a game that isn't going to maximize their profits, which is likely why they've waited so long to start up on MegaMan again in the first place.

  14. Well, I've already half of my part by buying the Collections. And since you can bet MM 11 will be sitting on my shelf Day 1, I'll just have to hope the demand for Mega Man to come back really has been as big as I've been lead to believe.

  17. I think they should reconsider X Challenge hard mode balance first. Bosses having that insane damage output like that Zero Nightmare thing is not even reasonable.

  18. They need to make Mega Man Soccer with Mega Man Zero, Zero 2, Zero 3 & Zero 4 in next Mega Man Collection.
