Happy 30th Anniversary, Mega Man! Glad to Have You Back

Heads up: It's December 17th in North America and that means Mega Man is officially 30-years-old. And sure enough, this is the first anniversary in many years that actually feels like a celebration. No longer do we sit, ponder and long for better days – they are here.

2018 will bring us Mega Man 11, all eight Mega Man X games on current-gen consoles, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 on Nintendo Switch, a brand-new animated series and remastered Hitoshi Ariga comics. But wait, there's more! At this very moment, legitimate hope actually exists for new entries in the Mega Man X, Mega Man Legends and the Mega Man Battle Network series. That's something that couldn't be said a year or two ago.

At long last it's an exciting time to be a Mega Man fan. And, oh my god, I finally have actually news to report again. You better believe I'm sticking around.

Here's to the new year!

  1. The fact they talked about Megaman Battle Network is really cool, i would want to see MMclassic/X first and for a moment but i won't be against a mmbn game because it's my favorite mm series, the anime was awesome (specialy since R.EXE AXESS) and the gameplay of the game is really interesting and need skill, there is a lot of potential and there could new possibilities with this series. MMBN7 or a canon game like exe 4.5 story, i will take it! (who care about the storyline when we can have awesome gameplay?)

I feel like they care not only about megaman classic as the identity of megaman games but also for all blue bomber who were built by a Dr Light (or other) like MMX, MMLegends and MMBN, that's cool. I mean, a real blue bomber who don't use the power of an outside source (ZX).

    2. Being the blue bomber is'nt about where your power come from, it's about how your use thoses powers! fighting evil, struggling against adversity with all your might, growing stronger to protect what your believe in (that and getting new power from defeated enemy)! It's about fighting for everlasting peace !!!

Now i agree with you about BN i got into it through the cartoon, and really loved the gameplay. there is'nt really an equivalent for this somewhere else.

    3. Yeah Anonymous, i suppose it's about the use of the elemental power (fire, ice, ect...) and some other things, anyway the most games we can get for all the series (classic, legend, ZX ect...) the best It will, i hope we can save megaman with megaman 11 first...if capcom is not too demanding for the sales...

I was sad about the fact MMX was supposed to be dead in MMZ, like definitely...but yeah, there can be still some games (like classic do before MMX without reveal the story beside the 2 series), i hope MMX will be back too, everything can happen anyway!

  2. Finally! It was getting lonely, spending the past seven years in my basement, constantly refreshing this blog's homepage to no avail. My family had to resort to bringing me food and water so I wouldn't die.

But in all seriousness, props to CAPCOM. I still can't say I like them as a company overall, but if this is an indicator of things to come, I may very well re-evaluate my opinion of them.

  3. If Capcom wants to make me even happier than I already am, they can redo Mega Man Universe. I seem to be one of the few who absolutely adored Mega Man Powered Up,, so a sequel to that would be the most amazing thing.
Even if it is based on super-overhyped Mega Man 2. Nyeh.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to bring the PSP-exclusive games to consoles people actually have/bought. I happen to know, from experience, that those games don't look half-bad, when rendered at a higher screen size. Hee hee.

    1. I loved MMPU as well, despite its flaws. Really bummed me out when Universe was canned. It was the closest thing we ever got to a Powered Up 2.

    2. i really wanted to see the irregular hunter fixes they had planned. and powered up's gameplay options with so many playable characters was neat too.

    3. The PSP sold 82 million units.... That's more than the GBA....

  4. And thanks to you too, Protodude. I found this blog sometime after Megaman 10's release and have been lurking ever since. I'm surprised you've kept this blog up this whole time with no new game news to speak of in the intertwining years. I was wondering when you'd throw in the towel on the series seeing as how Capcom seemed to wanted to keep this franchise in the past. Looks like good things do come to the faithful who wait.

    Let's get equipped!

It's been an honor to block your shots with my helmet for the last 30 years.

    (No seriously, Happy Birthday)

  6. I would wait with the cheers until the game is out and Capcom keeps their promise, because we all know how this might go, after all, we're talking about Capcom.

    1. It's in the phase where all they have to do is polish it and release it so they can not cancel it

  7. I thought BN ended nicely, so I'd personally settle for a collection with bug fixes and better translation. Bonus points if we get the 2-3 games that were never localized as well.

That said, I wouldn't object to a new game either. But before any of that can happen, we need to fight with our wallets and buy MM11.

    1. a remaster with handdrawn sprites, hd and trophies?
i'd be ok with that. even if they made a new one, as long as it doesn't end on a cliffhanger.

  8. LOL! Those artboxes are actually Japan version. Why don't they just changed it to their UGLY ART BOXES ? LAZY!

  9. Hoping for a new X game there. really, MM11 have to work well.
Even if EXE is my least favorite serie (I still love it, just less than the platformers timeline), i'd be more than glad to have a new game on this serie.

  10. MML 20th anniversary is close, too. would be nice to have a figure or something for the ocasion.

  11. It all sounds great, except for the animated series. I hope it isn't successful otherwise Capcom might be tempted to shift the whole Mega Man franchise in that direction.

And those who know Capcom know how prone they are to taking the MM franchise in bad directions. Like the EXE/ZERO/ZX Era (a.k.a. The Dark Ages)

    1. LOL talking about dark ages not mentioning MML the worst selling least MM entry ever.

Also Dark ages include best selling Mega Man games that built massive fanbase aside from the stagnant main games but not dark ages with crap like Mega Man Super Adventure or whatever those entirely pointless Power Fighter arcade games were, X7, XCM etc etc.

Crap taste and butthurt for spin-offs that run along side and are often better than the main series is a thing in the MM community, so no surprise here. Also nice try hard with the term "dark ages", what bus did you take to get here the Sonic the Hedgehog crybaby express?

    2. FYI, EXE is the most profitable Mega Man series. Sooooo....

    3. Japanese company taking their thing in the direction of a american made cartoon is very unlikely.
Also, look no further than this very page comment section to see that EXE is quite loved. Even if it's less my thing than the Classic, X and Zero, it does'nt change that they're good games. a direction not specifically fitted to my very taste is'nt the same as a bad direction.
Also, also even if some peoples seem to loathe the Zero or ZX games for not being like Classic of X (or for hapening to come out in a time where the MM game as a whole was already not as big as it used to be), they have their fans as well. Just because something is different than what come before does'nt make it bad, each serie does it's own stuff, that's the interest of making differents series to begin with.
Know that i don't mean to seem rude or disrespectful to you by saying that.

    4. Closest thing Mega Man had to a Dark Age was the X6/X7 combo. Disliking generally well-received games is not "Dark Ages". Get your head out of our ass.

    5. Nothing tells you Mega Man actually has a future more than series fanboy wars being waged like we traveled back in time 10 years, eh, Protodude? :P

  12. You forgot to mention the revival of Megamissions! >:(

But yeah Megaman is definitely making an effort to come back. Awesome times for Megaman fans.

  13. I'm sure no one cares about the new animated series, as they'd prefer that doesn't exist. Kind of sad really.

    1. Hey, i used to be kinda negative about this animated serie, not that it was going to be bad or what, it's just that i am of the mindset that a derivative of something should be a adaptation of the source material, as faithful as possible, putting aside what don't translate well from one media to another. (It's not just for Megaman, i'm like this for everyhting, movie, anime, etc... guess DBevolution traumatised me). So my opinion was that it might be a good cartoon, really, we won't know before it air, but it was not going to be a good megaman adaptation. the problem being that even if people discover MegaMan from the cartoon, they might just end up surprised that the games aren't like it. Like some people keep telling me "What? Black Widow and Hawkeye weren't founding member of the avengers?"
But i have calmed down about it now. the cartoon will have the advantage of making peoples hear about the name Mega Man, something the franchise have been needing for years. this could help advertise before the new game come out. And with the legacy collection being rereleased and MM11 coming out the same year as the cartoon, the audiences will be informed right for the start that it is not the same canon.
(Sorry if my english is'nt very good.)

  14. I echo the thanks to you, Protodude, for sticking with the MegaMan news. You're a small beacon of life in a sometimes-dead series (with a sometimes-childish fanbase :) and I hope many official props come your way in the future.
