"Mega Roll" Probably Won't Be Coming to Mega Man 11 (But She Should)

For the past couple weeks the official Rockman Unity Twitter account has been posting little Mega Man 11 tips called "Advice from Dr. Light's Lab". Each tip includes new artwork of Mega Man 11 characters, and this one – "#6: Release the 'Double Gear' Diligently" – features Roll decked out in her very own "Mega Man" gear. Coupled with the prospect of post-launch content, this piece has some fans hopeful that playable Roll DLC is coming. But is it really?

So here's the deal: a cropped version of that image has been making the rounds, and it's missing a key element. The original image has a message to fans that reads, "Roll will not appear like this in-game". Do note that, out of all the Japanese text in that image, this is the only line that's translated in English. I think it's safe to say Capcom really want you to keep your expectations in check here. That's my interpretation, at least.

Regardless of this image's intent, I think we can all agree it's time for Roll to be playable again. She was last playable in the Japanese-only Rockman 1 mobile port and before that, Mega Man Powered Up. If Mega Man 11 DLC really is on the burner (it could be) would Capcom really pass on the opportunity?

    1. I haven't seen this before man. Not to me.

    2. Looks like no news to me or hint to DLC. This artwork has been done before the game was released too.

  2. She was playable in Mega Man Power Up and I would rather she have a melee weapon than a range weapon so that her game play isn't the same as Mega Man tbh.

    1. 100%. I'm all for adding Roll as a playable character, but if its just a reskin, then don't bother. Give her her own moveset.

  3. Funny how CAPCOM was trying their best to prevent another fake hype-train oversea, most likely learned from the hype over the Starforce model, yet the people go out of their way to CROP even the one English text and pass it around anyway (never seen said cropped image, so idk what the reposter is telling people).

Do they think if the image is popular and have alot of people expecting it, CAPCOM will have to make it true to "take responsiblity" and not disappoint people?

  4. I mean, she got her own nendoroid before the game was even released. Maybe by "like this" they just mean not LOOKING like that? She's been getting more popular lately, who knows

    1. I think you are exactly right. They are referring to her "mega" costume not being in the game, nothing more.

  5. She should get converted into a battle suit. And she should be a fully playable character. Why not let a girl bot be playable also? It doesn't have to be one or the other. Look at ZX. It means a lot to little girls to see themselves represented in games. It won't hurt anything, so why not?

  6. I've seen similar-such things on DeviantArt, but this is the second time I've seen her "officially" equipped for combat. That's a good look for her~

Anyway, I won't get my hopes up for any significant DLC for Mega Man 11, much less having my all-time-favorite character in a leading… Roll (tee-hee), but I still say it'd be super-neat if those mock-ups of remixed past stages were fully-rendered and made into stages. It'd also be cool if the player could gain weapons from those stages, a'la the extra stages in 10, but that might be asking for too much.

  7. "Roll will not appear like this in-game" - obviously this means she'll appear in some other outfit : )

Honestly though. Capcom has to know people would buy playable Roll.

  8. It's complicated, cuz in this case this "representation" thing CAN hurt the game's concept/story that the creators intended. Roll can't get a fight form in canon cuz that's how the official story is laid out. Out of the two, Rock chose to fight as Megaman while Roll didn't. That's the story. And Light would probably be very sad to have both of his robokids fight.

If it's an IF story, sure. They can do whatever they want. Light gives her a big mega-body? Roll beats Wily with her little broom without any upgrades? Whatever. Or have a new girl character that kicks ass. Now THAT won't hurt anything cuz she'd be a total blank slate. Give her a non-buster weapon as well, maybe a sword or something.

  9. I'm glad she isn't a playable character. Megaman tends to be overshadowed by literally any other playable character in his own series to the point of being inherently boring on his own. He really needs the attention focused on his own gameplay and his own personality.

    1. I can definitely see your logic. I tend to play as Bass in the Power Battle/Fighters, & Forte/Battle for the Future, and 10, because I can, and prefer playing as Protoman in 9. Why? Because, I have played as Mega Man for 14 games straight.

It's good to give players options, sometimes. I can understand the fear of overshadowing the main character of their own series (hey, Zero…), but if it's done right, that shouldn't be a fear at all. Look at how Powered Up did things. Roll is the only character you can just grab-and-play, and even so, she still requires a download (token). All the other characters – ignoring the "Final Update" download for Protoman – need to be unlocked through gameplay via classic Megaman. (I don't think Megaman C works and I know Rock doesn't work.) Same goes for Vile in Maverick Hunter X.

Now, I'll admit… "DLC" usually doesn't work like that. 90% of the time, DLC is unlocked the instant it's downloaded. This was even the case for Mega Man 9/10 and its extra stages, modes, and characters. The only reason to play as Megaman in those games, if you have all the DLC, is if you care about the story or want to use the extra weapons. (Kind of baffling Protoman/Bass can't use the extra weapons…) But, DLC can be made to be unlockable, too! Look at how Shovel Knight did their bonus content. You absolutely have to beat the game as Shovel Knight to unlock extra campaigns. So, if Roll were made playable, I don't think it'd be unreasonable to have her be unlockable DLC rather than available right away.

That's just how I look at things.

    2. Personally I'd rather they let Megaman be the star for a while. If there are new moves to unlock I'd rather they be given to MM. He's been gone for so long it seems premature to let the spotlight be stolen by a different character overall.

I'd be supportive of a new one off game starring Roll, though. That could be fun.

  10. I think what this means for creators is that you can never EVER have a loli/"cute female" in a series, even if it's the most useless lampost of a character for literal decades cause it will generate that certain crowd that will foam at the mouth over it eventually.

I see a comment saying the reason that person wants to play as other characters is because that person played as Mega Man too consistently too often. Well yeah, no really, you're playing a game called Mega Man. I can understand liking the extra variety as an additive but to act like it is a relief from the title character the literal character the series is based on... Yeah I think maybe at that point you might not be a fan and should look for something else to fulfill your joy meter.

***But but Anon, Roll is useful, what about the shop and being a navigator?*** Oh you mean the "role" (no pun intended) Auto and Dr. Light innovated? ***But Anon being playable in MvC, TvC, MMPU and the cellphone game surely makes her a viable candidate for established lore in which she is known to be a combat machine thus eligible for legitimate playability in a mainline game, right?*** You mean the game that has her seemingly quit literally pulling a buster from under her dress and tucking it back under it, or turns into giant she bot that shoots titty missiles, or maybe pulling a giant bucket of water out of he butt big enough to flood an entire street temporarily? Oh you mean the 2fps port of the foundationally established premier game in the series or the highly chibi funsy remake that had every single robot master playable as an extra feature? Those are the sources we are going to use as canonical evidence of Roll's super fighting, saving the world battle machine style prowess huh?

***But but Anon, what about Zero, Bass, Duo and Proto Man?*** I'm not humoring that stupid question as if that is a comparison at all. Figure out why they make more sense as fighting machines/player characters on your own.

    2. idiotic comments like yours are why megaman died in the 1st place. i'd rather see roll than the overrated bass(who people only like because he made an game worse than megaman x6 tolerable) or protoman (whos a lame glass cannon) be playable in a sequel.
