Mega Man 11's Missing "Star Force" Costume Explained

The mystery of Mega Man 11's unused Mega Man Star Force costume, which was first seen in the pages of Game Informer's January 2018 issue, has at last been solved. According to developer commentary featured in the Rockman 11 Production Note book, the costume was indeed created as a placeholder for Tundra Storm.

They write, "When there was still no design for the Tundra Man weapon, Mr. Ueda created a Shooting Star style [Star Force] model as a place holder during development. It seems the magazine journalist that came took a photo of it... Sorry for confusing fans. We blame Ueda."

And there you have it. Sadly it doesn't look like there are any plans for the costume to be distributed as DLC or anything like that. But hey, maybe next time? I always thought the idea of being able to, say, purchase costumes based on different Mega Men from Dr. Light's lab kinda enticing. I mean, that's what I initially hoped what was going on here.

Ah well. Blame Mr. Ueda.

  1. aw, c'mon. Now that they have thrown the idea arround, even if it was not on purpose, they could as well do something with it.

  2. Man, if only there was a way we could convince them to implement it into the final game at least as a DLC optional toggle for the default Mega Man outfit, it's such a nice model and shame it's just a placeholder.
I never expected other Mega Men simply because their design differences from Classic are far less subtle than Star Force and wouldn't really be too noticeable if the only thing that changed about them was the helmet and busters.
X's design is mostly just a beefier Classic MM, so he would've been difficult especially.

Still it sucks that I was right about this being tied to Tundra Man, I was just wrong about it being in the game, Star Force is the most underrated/slept on trilogy in all of Capcom, Ueda was a hero.

    1. I meant far more subtle lol, dunno what happened there.

  3. To be fair to the devs, they did say that it was nothing, and to not put anything into it .

  4. I would have definitely bought it as DLC, it looks real awesome!

  5. This bums me out honestly, but maybe Capcom might capitalize on the idea. After all Alt. Costumes were very popular in Mario Odyssey.

I'll still always wonder why Star Force as a placeholder specifically? Maybe it looked Tundraman-y enough.

    1. The Odyssey comparison in regards to costumes is not one I would have thought of, but now that you mention it, that's interesting.

If we ever get a bigger scale Mega Man game like that, there could be plenty of costumes inspired by other Mega Men, robot masters, etc. Thinking about how much material there is to work with, that would actually be really cool.

  7. That's a little dissapointing,I was hoping it would be a DLC, and we would be able to buy other costumes from other Mega Man, but that,s okay

    Maybe Next Time :)

  8. I'm honestly not surprised, nor am I burned. Star Force was a more niche side to the franchise, after all (introduced right as Mega Man Fatigue was really becoming apparent), but I guess it's nice that someone at Capcom remembered it, even if was temporary.

  9. Why do they need to blame Ueda assuming the translation was right? If anything, perhaps they should've checked through the Journalist's photos before letting him off or otherwise taking a no photo policy on anything that isn't set in stone.

I don't know what's there to blame to be honest. Even if people didn't cared for Star Force, it's not like it will detract from the experience. If anything, I'd say people were excited at the possible idea of donning skins from other Megaman series. Definitely an idea that they should just consider rather than brush away.

    1. The blame is for getting people's hopes up over just a placeholder. As for putting the blame on Ueda, that's mostly just joking and poking fun since he made the model.

  10. That's a honest answer. and to their credits, i think they did say so earlier. Now it would be nice if they decided to do it in the end.
    Please Capcom, make it real.

  11. After beating the game, I really hope we get some DLC for the game. I really would like to see it expand, in a reasonable manner.

    Costumes are a nice thing.

As always more options the better.

Looking forward to finding out if Capcom is pleased with the sales numbers or not.

  12. What's really odd about this is that they went through the trouble of designing a new model as a mere placeholder when a simple palette swap of the base model a la MM1-10 would be just as serviceable without wasting time or resources.

  13. I'm still hoping we get DLC costumes for other Mega Men. It would be a great way to celebrate the franchise as a whole by having costumes from across the series. A Star Force and Battle Network costume would be at the top of my list to buy.

  14. I find that hard to believe.
Making a 3D model takes time and resources. If they needed a placeholder, they could have just copied any other finished model, maybe changed some colors, and called it a day.

    1. Happens alot. Square did the same thing on Final Fantasy

  15. A bit of a shame, but at least their response shows that they're aware of the demand among the fanbase. Maybe they'll patch it in as part of a DLC? Perhaps a DLC special stage level, a la 9 and 10, where a time/space portal causes classic MM to cross paths with his alternate timeline future counterpart.
