PlayStation Received a Mega Man 30th Anniversary Invite, Too


Siliconera isn't the only one "invited" to Mega Man's 30th anniversary bash on December 4th. The official PlayStation Twitter account is teasing the celebration, too.






Hm... now I wonder why PlayStation is in on this? Hmm, hmm.

Oh, that reminds me. I got an e-mail earlier today from a certain company. They're sending me a package, too. What it could be, I wonder? I guess we'll find out together...

The Mega Man 30th anniversary live stream kicks off 11AM pst on Monday, December 4th.

  5. Normally I'd believe this isn't going to lead anywhere. The hype train usually stays at the train station without ever leaving.

    But the usual leakers/insiders at ResetERA AKA former NeoGAF are now hinting that something that we'll actually care about is happening. Hmm...

    2. Let him boycott, I'll be enjoying the sh** out of a good Mega Man game on PlayStation, PC maybe not XBO or it's X variant but lets be real here.

      I'm not on Nintendo's groins, I can at least branch out to other platforms to enjoy my favorite entertainment IP.

    5. @Joseph Collins: Kinda hard to start on something that wasn't even in existence.

      In the 5th gen of console competition the birth place of the PlayStation's brand, literally 98.5% of console Mega Man games were released on the PSX with exactly 1 released on the N64. It seems to me if you were a Mega Man fan back then that experience should have taught you not to be such a console brand exclusive loyalist.

    6. Boycot No,Protest,Yes. Mega Man does a hell kf a lot better on Nintendo Platforms because the Franchise fits the Nintendo brand best and the great majority of fans are Nintendoites. Just lime how 80% OF Street Fighter fans are also Playstation fans. AND 90% of Fighting Gamers prefer Sony and Microsoft over Nintendo. The SF Series and other fighting games just work best on those systems.

      Mega Man works best on Nintendo. Boycoting doesn't really work in this case,since nothing has been officially anounced yet. Protesting,on the other hand,Will.

      And that is my 2 Cents.

    8. Mega Man should be on consoles that doesn't like the series as much so it can sell bad and go back to being dead. SFV did awful. MvCI did Awful. Mega Man will be next. Great idea.

Yeah it's because of Playstation and XBox that SFV and MvCI undersold not because of the myriad of problems both had like bad launches due to controversies like barebones single player content, rootkits, broken online functions, massive input lag, uninspiring art direction, missing fan favorite character staples because of business agendas, etc etc.

      It's not like Sony literally paid to get SFV developed or anything. Yeah it's their fault. Also as soon as Capcom got its act together regarding SFV it stopped doing awful go figure, probably passing the two million mark by now (AKA selling more than any Mega Man game in history). Nintendo fanboys are starting to make me dislike the brand.

    1. Calm down. There's no confirmation that there's a new game coming, and Nintendo of America just retweeted it. Even if it's not on Nintendo consoles, it doesn't determine the game's quality, by that logic shovelware exclusive to the 3DS e-shop is better than games like Shadow of the Colossus. If you're boycotting it because of what console it's not appearing on you wouldn't have bought it anyways TBH.

Just to put this thought out here, since I guess it's one of the more appropriate places: I hope if Mega Man does come back, it becomes a franchise that puts out titles every couple of years, not every year, and only two at most per year. I think one of the things that lead to it performing worse over time was an oversaturation of the market, where CAPCOM would pump out a ton of Mega Man titles within the space of a few years, all of varying series, confusing some and forcing people to prioritize investment.

    I mean, let's think on the early 2000's. From 2002-2005, we had the likes of X7, X8, X Command Mission, Mega Man and Bass, Battle Networks 3-6, the entirety of the Zero series...It was just too much. I mean, not that I think any of the series should get ignored going forward (I'd love a new ZX title), but I think if Capcom doesn't want to burn out the market again, it needs to invest more time into each installment and space them out. Hell, it could even be good for the developers, too, since it'd give them more time to refine each entry and add more content to them, making for better experiences overall.

    So, yeah. I hope the franchise comes back, but I also hope that, when it does, it comes with a revised business strategy that's more inductive of long-term growth.

    P.S., I hope the new Mega Man cartoon doesn't wipe everything out of continuity. While I could see the temptation on Capcom's part to try and maintain brand consistency, it'd just be a big middle finger for the rest of the fans that have been waiting years for new installments.

    1. I agree with you. Based on those artworks leaked on legacy collection 2, I do believe that if something is on the works, it's megaman 11 with a new art style. And maybe a X series legacy collection.

    2. Doesn't stop Mario, Pokemon etc from exceeding Mega Man titles per year and still selling a butt ton. Mario even does the branching concurrent series thing.

      I think the only difference is that Mario and such are way more popular and renowned, and or have bigger teams working on subsequent and concurrent entries.

    3. It's not really effective to compare Mega Man to Mario or Pokemon because, as you said, those franchises are basically cultural icons. I don't think Mega Man will ever achieve that level of popularity, even with the movie and cartoon, so CAPCOM has to take an inherently different approach with their franchise than Nintendo does with theirs. They used to manage it like it was Mario, and it worked when the games were cheap and easy to produce. But nowadays, the Classic and X games, in their traditional formats, would only really work as downloadable titles; something like Legends is what they'd need to focus on for retail releases.

      Nintendo understands this, because while yeah, there are a bunch of Mario titles, in terms of platformers, there have really only been two notable ones within the past five or so years. Mega Man, on the other hand, would usually release at least four or five platformers in that same time span.

    4. I agree mostly but I think notable is kinda a subjective qualifier since most of the Mario games are massive sellers and have tons of notice.

      Let's see not including spin-offs that don't star Mario as the key playable character like Luigi's Mansion, New Super Luigi, Yoshi's Island etc (which should be included if we are to be fair, but even without that), notable platfromers last five years... Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Odyssey and if we weren't to include Mario vs Donkey Kong that would be at least three (won't mention Super Mario Run cause it wasn't a heavily developed console game).

      But yeah even the last five years were light on Mario platformers. If we were to, say... look at 2005-2010 we'd have five major selling Mario platformers, the proceeding five years we'd have six. Remember not including other titles like spin-offs. Now if I were to add Mario RPGs, Sports, Kart Racers, Party Games etc it would absolutely crush Mega Man's outings in terms of amount per year.

      That said not everything is Mario. Personally I would't mind smaller budgeted games for Mega Man, just not entirely dedicated to a single style like 8bit or 16bit and even within those confines at least better developed, like change up the sprite work and general art style from time to time it's not like all 8it and 16bit style games have to look exactly the same. Anyway I'm going off on a tangent.

    5. We can only hope. I mean, if there's any time to put out an experimental downloadable title, it's now. We know the public has a palate for them, if all the successful retro indie games are any indication. The idea of one of the franchises that most took inspiration from coming back, looking better than ever graphically, would certainly give it an edge over its competition. I'm actually legitimately surprised it's taken CAPCOM this long to attempt a $15 downloadable Mega Man 11, if that's what they're doing.

      For now, they will indeed probably focus on a couple smaller entries before they regain enough faith in the franchise to try a new, 3D bigger-budget adventure.

    A. Is not "Legacy" anything. If it actually is old games AGAIN, port them/recreate them and add extra content. I have absolutely no interest in buying the exact same thing I've already bought once, twice, maybe 3 or more times for an art and music gallery and "Savestate Challenge!™"
    B. Isn't some reboot junk.
    C. Has absolutely no platform exclusive content, preferably no region exclusive content either.
    D. Comes to PC and Switch, in addition to Xbox/PS4.

    Then I will probably like whatever they announce. I'm excited to see what it is anyway.
