Portion of Nintendo 3DS Code Found Inside Mega Man Legacy Collection 2

Several strings discovered in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 seem to suggest there is, or perhaps at one time was, a Nintendo 3DS version of the game in the works. Read on for GreigaMaster's findings!

According to GreigaMaster, the following strings can be found in the PC version under "disc/message/rcc2_message_all_US/msg_System.bin":

These strings correspond with Nintendo 3DS multiplayer functionality. It implies a 3DS version of Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 would have some form of multiplayer... Mega Man 7's 1v1 battle mode? Or something else entirely?

Looking a little deeper, there are a few references to saving replay and game data to an SD Card:

Lastly, we have a 3DS directory file:

/disc/message/rcc2_message_all_US/msg_Steam.bi

/disc/message/rcc2_message_all_US/msg_PS4.bin

/disc/message/rcc2_message_all_US/msg_XBox1.bin

/disc/message/rcc2_message_all_US/msg_3DS.bin

So what does this all mean? I see three possibilities:

  •  A Nintendo 3DS version of Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is in active development and may release at a later date.
  •  A Nintendo 3DS version was in development at one time but is no more.
  •  These strings belong to an unrelated project from the same development team.

Personally, I'm between the first two options. Some of these strings are a little too specific not to refer to MMLC2 (i.e "Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is trying to access the SD Card"). Pending official word from Capcom, though, all we can do is speculate.

If you want a more thorough look at the strings, GreigaMaster dumped all relevant text here and here.

  1. If Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 actually ends up being released on 3DS, I'll also buy the original Mega Man Legacy Collection for it, and I might even track down a physical edition for the gold Mega Man amiibo on top of that. Let me give you money, Capcom!

    1. it might be that they where going to do it on 3ds, but changed their mind and decided that they would drop the 3ds version to instead release a switch version later.
i don't particularly think this is the case, but this is a option.

  3. Sounds like they pulled the plug on the 3DS version.
Capcom promises more Nintendo support in the wake of Ultra Street Fighter II's success, but I think they're just saying that to jerk off their stock options. From a market standpoint, Capcom looks good if they say they're going to support the hugely successful Nintendo Switch, but veteran gamers know that Capcom never makes good on their promises and Capcom of America's anti-Nintendo bias is every bit as strong as all the North American-based third-party developers.
I fully encourage them to prove me wrong, but I'd bet my last dollar that they won't.

  4. Do these strings exist in the first collection? It seems at the very least feasible to me that both collections are based on the same code base.

    1. I can look into it. But remember, MMLC1 was by an entirely different team.

  5. there type of thing are often time indications of future items that they will support. would make sense wit the recent announcement that capcom is porting games to the switch so it isnt a stretch to think this may come to the 3ds sometime later this year likely around the holiday shopping season

  6. Well here's the thing, I am a big megaman fan and I would like to see a new X or a megaman x remastered with this gen graphics. I have gone through these megaman games over 100 times already

  7. I like how the filenames for those strings refer to Rockman Classics Collection 2 (RCC2), rather than Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (MMLC2). I don't know why but I find that amusing.

  8. So in order to view these files this guy got the password to extract the "Disc" file of MMLC2? Anyone knows where to find that password?
    Thanks
