Mega Man Legacy Collection Headed to Japan


Good news for our friends on the other side of the world: Mega Man Legacy Collection is coming to Japan, rechristened as Rockman Classics Collection.

The good word comes from a savvy crew of data miners who unearthed the above logo from Legacy Collection's files. What's more, screenshots from the game have been found on Japanese Xbox One servers. Together, these images suggest a future release.

It remains to be seen when the game will hit Japanese consoles. Availability is also in question, whether or not it will be available both in digital and physical formats.

  1. I can't imagine why Japanese fans would be interested in purchasing a NES emulator and ROMs... but, I'm sure for the uninitiated, it will sell.

    2. It would be spectacular if Mega Man Legacy Collection was built using Complete Works as a base reference, but it wasn't. That would likely be too costly, time-consuming and would require a skill-set of which Digital Eclipse doesn't possess, apparently.

      No amount of fabricated developer stories and cheap PR stunts can fix any of that now, it's too late. Mega Man Legacy Collection is nothing more than a fancy NES emulator packed with NES ROMs. And we fell for it.

      It's only half an emulator, apparently. I pulls graphic, sound, and stage data from the games, but it uses a recoded version of the physics engines for each of the games. Why? I genuinely don't know. It's pretty damn weird, regardless.

  2. This is a little interesting, considering that Legacy Collection was purely an effort by Capcom of US. I'll be curious to see how it handles there.

  3. You can also achieve this by setting your Xbox One into Japanese for region.

    Only the title screen will show Rockman Classics Collection. Everything else, like the Boxarts and Games will still be in English and show as "Megaman".

  4. Good. I am so getting the Japan version. Oh yes, I am hoping for the Europe version as well. No, I do not want America version, thought.

      There's less typos in the Japanese text (maybe?), nicer logos in Rockman, Rockman 3, and Rockman 6, no "Normal'Difficult" toggle for Rockman 2, and a completely different piece of intro music in Rockman 6. Otherwise, I'm not sure about the differences.

    4. Except, will the Japanese collection emulate the Japanese games? Somehow I can't see the developers wanting to re-do all that work in preservation. They might just package it with the English games...

    5. Due to how the Eclipse Engine works, you can actually swap out similar games with each other -- such as US region to Japanese and vice-versa. This also includes ROM hacks.

      That said, they shouldn't have to do too much finagling to get the Japanese games working in their engine. Maybe change a value here or there...

  6. I wonder if they'll fix the unintentional Challenge Mode exploits, lack of flicker when fighting the Mecha Dragon, and other inaccuracies (compared to the NES/Famicom originals) that plague this thing when they release it in Japan...

    1. I think it was said that some of the flicker was actually coded in by the original developers, where some of it was not - they kept the stuff coded in and didn't do anything about the stuff that wasn't.

      They cited an example as the life bar during the start of the second Wily Fortress battle of the first game, if I remember. If I could find the stream in which they discuss this I'd put this up, so I apologize for only having just memory to go by for now.

      That does seem to be at odds with all the otherwise proper (to my recollection of the old NES games, what of it remains) amount of flicker and slowdown, though...

    2. Ah, but see... they were trying to make "the most accurate, most faithful ports ever", and with Frank 'n them's dedication to :replicating glitches" and all that, you'd think they'd leave all the sprite flicker in and/or replicate sprite flicker better.

  9. Not a silly question at all, thanks very much. Rockman was already an established guitar amp brand here, and since "rock" doesn't just refer to a type of music but also to stones, "Rockman" might not sound as cool here.

    What I meant was why didn't they call it Rockman Legacy Collection.

    4. They're asking why the change from "Legacy Collection" to "Classics Collection", not "Mega Man" to "Rockman", you guys. In my opinion, "Classics Collection" sounds better. "Legacy Collection" makes it sound bigger and better than what it actually is, but "Classics Collection" sounds more honest.

  10. I wonder what "Craig's Challenge" would be renamed to, if the collection is indeed intended for release in Japan? I mean, I doubt Craig Skistimas is a familar name in Japan, and "Craig" can refer to anybody.
