'Red Ash' Revealed: Inafune's Spiritual Mega Man Legends Successor?

Hold on to your butts. Keiji Inafune and Studio 4°C's next project has leaked ahead of Anime Expo... and it looks to be a spiritual successor to Mega Man Legends.

This is "Red Ash", a new "legendary" project conceptualized by Keiji Inafune and Studio 4°C.

As you've probably noticed, there's quite a bit of Mega Man Legends in here. We've got characters greatly influenced by Mega Man Volnutt, Roll, Teisel and Tron (check out the Bonne-esque emblem at 0:33). There's even a little Servbot thing, a character designated "#2".

The similarities don't stop there. The concept art has a lot of Legends flair right down to the lived-in-world to cybernetic body parts. The lively, swinging music has me thinking Inafune nabbed a certain composer.

Oh, best of all? There's a secret in the game's title. If you slide a couple letters over, Red Ash becomes..

RE DASH

We'll be learning more about Red Ash soon; July 4th, according to today's Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter update. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: I noticed a really obscure Legends throwback. Art (aka Artillery) is a unique Legends NPC initially planned to be Mega Man Volnutt's rival. He carries a side arm. Early concepts for Roll had a side arm, too (purportedly a tool for welding metal and parts).

Very curious.

  1. I honestly don't know how to feel about this. I always thought Inafune was joking when people were asking if he would give Legends the MN9 treatment. Even if this is a spiritual successor, it still doesn't help knowing there won't be a continuation of the real Legends series. Has it come down to this? Will we also get a Battle Network knock-off? It seems a bit disingenuous with how "too similar" RED-ASH is to the Legends series to the point that the Bonne emblem is just reduced in size to avoid any copyright issues. I'm really not a fan of this blatantly not based on a certain series but actually is without crossing red tape thing going on on Kickstarter. Hopefully, this game can stand on its own merits instead of riding on the Legends hype, because Mighty No. 9 is actually coming out to look really mediocre despite all the hype that it was the spiritual successor to Mega Man.

Speaking of new series, what the hell happened to Kai-Oh: King of Pirates? Was that cancelled?

  3. I'm excited, looks like the legends team and the bonnes got fused into one group. data server bot. barrel tiesel, roll tron, and I guess trigger is combined with the MML3 guy.

  4. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same guy who always complained/criticized about Japanese game developers being stubborn with their old ways and always doing the same thing? I mean, I applauded Mighty No. 9 but with that game, Azure and now this...I don't know, at the moment I feel very mixed about all this.

    1. In Comcepts defence, Azure Striker Gunvolt is Inticreates ip. They showed it to Inafune, who helped improve the initial concept.

    2. Also, in comcepts defense, gunvolt is an extremely unique game. It shares many elements with megs man zero, sure, but the primary machanic is completely different.

Even MN9 is unique from classic mega man regardless of being a spiritual successor. It really depends on what you mean by "old ways" and "the same thing"

    3. I'm also glad that Red Ash isn't a MN9 spinoff and is it's own series. Should Inafune continue this trend or reimagining former megaman titles they should be their own thing and not spinoffs of any one title. Though let's hope he doesn't go TOO crazy with the reimaginings.=P

  7. While I would still like an actual sequel to Legends 3 (since I'm in it for the story), I think it's nice that Inafune is going to make a game that's in the same style as the Legends series. Just like Mighty No. 9, though, I'll enjoy this game as its own thing. I want to support Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash, but I hope Capcom steps up to the plate to deliver more Mega Man games, too. I hope people can realize that all of these things can co-exist.

    1. Unfortunately, Capcom is never going to go back to Legends ever again. And even if they did, it likely would not be the same as the people behind it are no longer around. This is about as close as one can get without it being exactly Legends (because they can't).

    1. Normally I would agree with you, and actually I do, but the thing about this particular situation is that Capcom are never going to go back to Legends themselves. Ever. That's the unfortunate reality of things. Yes it would be absolutely fantastic if Inafune did some more original work (and a real shame about the pirate game being cancelled), but Inafune at this point is just giving back something that the fans as well as himself have wanted for a long time now. I remember prior to Legends 3's announcement, he wrote that letter about how extremely passionate he was about the game. It'd be even better if Red Ash's similarities could be dumbed down (particularly with Teisel v2 and Tron v2), but I can see why this would be presented in this fashion.

Maybe after Mighty No 9 and Red Ash are done he'll do something more original and risk-taking, but for the time being, don't blame the guy for wanting to do something that Capcom outright refuses. It's either this or no Legends-like game at all, because the real Legends is never going to see the light of day ever again. Outside of ports of course.

    2. But most people like Legends for the story, settings and characters, that kind of thing can't really be replaced properly. There are many games that exist with similar gameplay to Legends already.

      Delete
    3. And who says that Red Ash is going to have a bad story? For god sake, the game was JUST announced with a couple of concept art revealed and you're already going to say that it's going to have a bad story when we literally know almost nothing about it?

If what is said is true about the composer possibly being the same, maybe Inafune has gathered the previous staff to work on this. Or maybe not. However Inafune has worked on numerous Mega Man games before as well as their stories. Red Ash can have good story potential. At the very least wait before you judge it. That's my biggest pet peeve in gaming.

      Delete
    4. OMG no one is saying anything is gonna have a bad story, I'm saying YOU CAN"T SUCCEED CHARACTERS, STORIES AND SETTINGS COLLECTIVELY PROPERLY.

People want to see Mega Man get off the moon or see where his relationship with the other characters will lead or something.

What is Red Ash gonna do about that without blatantly continuing the story? Is it gonna be like Main dude: hey you know I heard on the news the other day some "blue" android got stuck somewhere, Main chick: Oh really, well he got off I heard from wherever he was stuck. Main dude:That's nice, Main chick:yeah... Both:wink wink

What the heck do you not understand about that???

    5. I liked legends for the gameplay. I don't see too many games like it either...

    6. I'm in agreement with Erik the Red here. The only game that probably comes close to the gameplay of Legends is Solatorobo.

    7. You're shitting on Red Ash merely because it is not Legends and not going to complete the storyline. OF COURSE IT ISN'T. No one here is saying that it is.

That's not the intention of this game. The intention of this game is to deliver a game that is SIMILAR in concept to Legends. That's a whole other thing.

It is obviously not going to be the same game, and it is obviously going to be different. The only way Legends would see a continuation is if Capcom wants to continue it. Inafune can't do anything on his end, so to blame him and Comcept for not getting Mega Man off the moon is redundant. If you're looking for someone to blame, blame Capcom, because as I've already just said, they're never going to return to that series ever again.

      Like goddamn, calm down.

Got Damn, could you at least do me a favor and think before you post?

No one is shitting on anything (holy got dang molly) stop being defensive. I am saying right, and pay attention very very closely, that stories etc can't be succeeded. THAT IS IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

To my understanding most Mega Man Legends fans think the gameplay and stuff is pretty average, but are mostly interested in the story and characters and world building. THAT IS MOSTLY WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE CONTINUED.

If you want similar gameplay to Legends, play Zelda or any other open world sandbox game that allows long/short range combat and RPG elements.

      Delete
    10. From my understanding, you're the one who is not reading my posts. And for god sake, please calm down and stop shouting like that, it doesn't make you look good and seems really childish.

Of course fans of the series want to see Legends continued and to have that awful cliffhanger resolved. I would very much like that to happen too. But the thing is, even though Red Ash is clearly meant to be a similar alternative to Legends, it is still not Legends itself. It is not intended to replace Legends. That is what I have been trying to say here.

What Inafune is doing here is delivering a game similar in concept, setting and characterization. It will never be the same game, but what he is doing is just providing an alternative here since Capcom are likely never going to develop another Legends game themselves. No one here is saying that Red Ash is going to be the be-all, end-all.

Red Ash has nothing to do with the continuation of Legends. They are similar but still entirely different games produced by different people. I honestly do not understand why you are complaining about Capcom dropping Legends when Red Ash has nothing to do with that. It is just a spiritual successor in concept, not intended to replace the damn series. The game won't prevent Capcom from returning to Legends if they ever wanted to. The problem here is that they won't.

And yes, we have games like Zelda. Although it's funny the way you say that when technically Zelda came first and mastered the genre years before Legends. The difference however is that Legends has its own unique setting, which adds to the world just as much as the characters and story does. Red Ash, from my understanding, is meant to be similar to that in concept, and it will likely have just as good story and characterization to back its own setting. They're meant to compliment each other.

You're basically being butthurt over Legends 3's cancellation and taking it out on Red Ash. Even if Red Ash didn't exist, Capcom still won't return to Legends and that is the reality of it. This changes nothing.

    11. "stop shouting": I'm not, I shouted once jokingly for dramatic effect, other than that, if you mean all caps, I'm writing in all caps to emphasize segments (if you have a better why like highlights, tell me and I'll do that instead) , and how bout you stop misinterpreting and assigning false motives to my writing? That would make me a lot less frustrated, and before you assign some action to that or some bullcrap, yes I can be frustrated without shouting. That is why I capitalize some things but not let's say "holy got dang molly".

"It (Red Ash) is not intended to replace Legends.": I never implied or accused it of doing that. I also never accused or implied people of saying it does that, which covers your later part here - "No one here is saying that Red Ash is going to be the be-all, end-all."- I am saying the things most Legends fans want to see continued can't be succeeded properly. That is what I have been trying to say here.

"setting and characterization": I'm saying those two things collectively can be alternatives but cannot be succeeded properly, so they'll end up being just alternatives or in other words distractions that don't fulfill the wants craved by most fans to my knowledge. Unless of course you blatantly rip the source inspiration off to the T. And for the future I think the words you are looking for is atmosphere and aesthetic, now those I can see being succeeded properly.

"complaining about Capcom dropping Legends": Where do I do that? Quote me verbatim.

"Red Ash has nothing to do with the continuation of Legends.": Than why is it on this site, for it's spiritual succession of Ryuusei no Rockman and Subaru's hair, right? I'm gonna let you in on something, spiritual successor in essence means continuing something in spirit.

"technically Zelda came first and mastered the genre years before Legends": That is irrelevant, it is still a game that plays like Legends conceptually. I never even implied that Legends came out first either or either of them mastering the genre, and for the record, now that you have brought it up, bringing open world to 3D type thing was done by Legends first, not that it even matters.

"The difference however is that Legends has its own unique setting": So does Red Ash from the looks of it, I don't expect a lore including carbons, reploids, purifier units, kattelox or whatever (it might actually have counterparts to those things though, but it most likely won't have the expansive history). It also looks a lot more steam punk than I remember Legends being.

"and it will likely have just as good story and characterization": I don't confirm or deny that, that is not in question here, except for when you falsely accuse me of saying that it won't have a good story.

"You're basically being butthurt over Legends 3's cancellation and taking it out on Red Ash": Actually no, I'm playing devil's advocate (based on being accustomed to the incessant nagging of fans), I don't even like Legends like that, I'd much rather see ZX, X, Classic and heck even Battle Network (even though it "ended") continued, because of their gameplay formula, characters, musical style and settings, and would like to see them expanded and evolved. Legends is the one series I can take or leave.

And for the last got dang time, I have nothing against Red Ash, all I'm saying is that it can't properly succeed Legends where it counts, at least to my understanding of what made Legends special to most fans described by them throughout the past 7 or so years.

      Delete
    12. "THAT IS IIIIIIIIIT!!" is more childish to me than exaggerating.

When I said that Red Ash has nothing to do with the continuation of Legends, I meant that it has nothing to do with its continuation. That's it. It's on this site because it's still obviously based on Legends. That is all the game has going for it, from what we can see now.

I'm also not saying, nor did I ever said, that it would surpass Legends' legacy. That series will always exist in memory and history. That still however didn't stop people from cheering enthusiastically when Inafune teased the idea of a "Mighty Number Legends", meaning that people are open to a game that is -like- Legends. And in the end, that is all this game is intended for. Capcom won't do it, so Inafune makes a similar game for people who want to play a game that is -like- Legends.

It is a rip-off in definition, but being a "rip-off" is not necessarily a bad thing. I have played many games before that were quite similar to games before them, and in many ways actually found these so-called "rip-offs" more enjoyable. Many of those games also experimented with new ideas and became fairly successful, so they are not always exactly the same.

In the end, Legends 3 will never happen. People need to either accept that, or accept an alternative to the series. I guess what I'm saying is, I just find this really pointless to argue and complain when Red Ash isn't going to replace Legends. If you don't like it and find it inferior, just don't play the damn game.

You say Legends was the first to bring an open world to a 3D setting. Ocarina of Time has been in longer development, and had it not been delayed several times, could have been released sooner. So no, I'd say Zelda still did it first despite OoT being released a year later. Not that it matters,

      Anyway I'm done here.

      I for one am.
Mighty No. 9 looks like crap, and in general the way they did everything with the Kickstarter just pisses me off.
      Now this.
You're all getting caught up in Inafgods master plan, and you don't even know it.
I'm looking more forward to the Bloodstained - Ritual of the Night. If only because I at least know that Iga, besides just making money, wants to actually make a game. Even though he too does some shit on kickstarter I dislike. But eh.

With Inafune I'm sure that's not even the case anymore. He's obviously just exploiting all of the nostalgia. All of it.
He left Capcom before the Legends 3 demo (for a game that wasn't even entirely green-lit) was done. And it wasn't that long when he spoke of how much he wants to make it. Then he just left. Don't even get me started on his offer to Capcom to "collaborate" and work on Legends 3. After he fucking abandoned the fucking project first.
He's a business man, and obviously a good one, because he scummed you all out of shitloads of money for a game that looks mediocre at best.

Feel free to disagree or defend him, but I won't change my mind.
Oh and just so we're clear. I'm not even on Capcom side, or anything. I think they are poisonus like hell. But Inafune isn't that much better.

[Also, I'm sending this post again, because I'm not sure if it went through the first time]

    2. You'll disagree with me anyway, but I don't think Inafune's intention was/is to scam people. He said that if he does do a sequel to MN9, it would not be crowd-funded. I honestly believe the reason they did the Kickstarter was mainly to gauge interest in the game and to see if it would be a worthwhile investment.

Look at Yooka-Laylee, they were already going to make the game to begin with, but most of the funding is there to develop extras that otherwise would not added. Because believe it or not, game development is expensive, and even seemingly tiny additions can still cost a lot. Retail publishing is an even more expensive and risky endeavor, which is why most games of this type usually end up as digital-only games. MN9 was one of the few lucky ones to secure a publisher.

I'm not defending MN9, mind you. I mean it does look fairly mediocre now that I've seen its development over the while. But to shit on them for using Kickstarter as a stepping stone is pretty dumb. Look at the earlier pirate game and how it was dropped by publishers. Sometimes Kickstarters are necessary, especially for small, new companies.

      Delete
    3. I have worded myself wrong.
The thing with kickstarter and MN9 I don't actually like is not the fact they used or how they used it, but rather what was done to gain interest in it.
That's my main gripe. Inafune is a man of ideas, but he's not actually making any of this shit. Aside from promoting it and putting his seal of approval on it, he has little do with it. The thing I hate the most though, is what I mentioned in my previous comment.
      EXPLOITING NOSTALGIA

The very first video he made, where the nicely done footage of him talking about wanting to make a spiritual successor and blah blah. It was the bestl done example of a "bait" that I've ever seen. Even I got caught... for some time.

He's a fraud, plain and simple. He has ideas, he can draw quite decently. And he's a shrewd businessman. I'll give him all of that.

While I can't say I know all the facts, I really grew to despise Inafune over the years. People blame Capcom (which is shit, I know) but Inafune isn't that much better to begin with.
Yet a lot of dumbos in the "Megaman" fandom are literally praising him as if he's some sort of savior of Megaman.
He had his share of involvment, yes. But in the end, nobody praises all the others who actually improve upon his ideas, flesh them out and actually turn them into games.

    4. "nobody praises all the others who actually improve upon his ideas, flesh them out and actually turn them into games."

You could say that about any major head of any video game project.

Miyamato, Kojima, Aonuma, Yuji Naka, Igarashi, Sakaguchi etc all hog the glory of the creations many helped make possible.

And enough with the Keiji wanted westernization BULLSHIET, that was something fans that disliked him put on his head to allude people into thinking he was attacking Japan. He never wanted to westernize already established series he wasn't the one that put together DmC and even if he did (WHICH HE DIDN'T) he wouldn't have done that to every series.

BTW HE was and STILL is 10000000000000000000% right in my honest opinion, Japan needed to break the mold and target bigger audiences, world audiences to compete, and the best selling market is the WESTERN ONE. He specifically said while appealing to the west don't just imitate the west, BUT HAVE YOUR OWN FLAVOR. Regardless of what he said anyway, whether you agree or disagree with his opinions he specifically said he says those things not because he hates Japan but because he wants to help Japan basically not to bastardize them. The only things that still competes with the west in terms of gaming from Japan are Pokemon, some Nintendo IPs, Final Fantasy.... Maybe Street Fighter can hold its own against Mortal Kombat and that's about it, everything else is either on the decline or niche.

    5. Inafune is not a savior of Mega Man, and no one here is saying he is. Making MN9, Gunvolt (not really made, but had involvement with it), and now this won't save Capcom's Mega Man. Hell, it doesn't even make Capcom of Japan bat their eyes.

We obviously still want Mega Man games, real Mega Man games, but that's Capcom's own choice now.

      Delete
    6. Ever since people on the internet convinced themselves Mighty No. 9 is an abomination, people just can't use reason when talking about Keiji Inafune. Very peculiar.

I doubt you'll listen, Lord Forte, but I wanted to chime in.

First, Inafune didn't just up and abandon Legends 3, he was the one lobbying for it for years despite going on record multiple times saying he didn't like his job at Capcom. Once he had gotten it (seemingly) approved for development, got together his hand-picked team that he knew could do it right, and laid down the groundwork for the design and fan involvement, then he left, thinking it was all locked in and secure and he could finally move on to what he wanted to do, his last desire at Capcom fulfilled.

When the unthinkable happened and the game was canned, he wasted no time in offering to come back aboard as a contractor to get it done, but Capcom wasn't having it. I'll also add that Capcom cancelled the game without releasing the finished prologue demo, which they explicitly said was going to be used to gauge interest for the game... citing a lack of interest. Legends 3 got shut down despite Inafune's plans, not because of him.

Second, Inafune doesn't just do nothing on these games like you seem to believe. He's done a lot of work as a producer, including many successful titles at Capcom. Dead Rising and Lost Planet wouldn't have even been made without him, as he conceptualized both (to the best of my knowledge) and developed them in secret when Capcom shot the ideas down, later showing them a working proof of concept that convinced them to go ahead with development, and both games becoming huge successes.

People give him flak for his idea to outsource to western developers for development, but people also hugely overstate the effects of his plans while simultaneously misunderstanding his place in the projects. Of the major games outsourced during his time at Capcom, there was Dark Void, Bionic Commando 09, and Dead Rising 2. The former two flopped, but the latter was a rousing success, as were its accompanying products (Case Zero, Case West, Off the Record).

For Dark Void and Bionic Commando, Inafune was merely an executive producer (a title which means almost nothing), but for Dead Rising 2 he was actually hands-on as a producer, and when you couple this with his comments on record about how (and I'm paraphrasing here) western studios are technically proficient, but you have to keep an eye on them to get the right results, it starts to paint the picture that the failed results of outsourcing lie on Capcom's mismanagement, not the idea itself. This goes doubly for DmC, which had near zero involvement from Inafune (he's not even in the credits) and had Ninja Theory doing whatever they wanted without any protest from Capcom, despite the long development time, constant stream of complaints from series fans, and their presumably bloated budget, going by their projected sales.

All the hate I see for him seems to come from a lot of ignorance, presumptions, and things people arbitrarily decide are negative traits (being a businessman, or a producer, etc.), and it universally ignores all his past work and contributions. It's annoying as hell, but I think it'll pass once MN9 comes out, people realize it isn't the devil incarnate (and judging by the reception to it on more mainstream sites, it gets positive reviews), and then we get ReCore and whatever else Comcept is planning.

And sorry for the wall of text, everyone.

especially considering who he's supposed to be based on

  20. Looks interesting, let's wait and see before criticizing Inafune.

  21. I'm not criticizing Inafune for making Mega Man-like games (although I recall him jumping ship from Capcom saying developers were not doing anything original), I'm criticizing the notion that a couple games made by him are going to replace decades of stories, characters, and overall memories for people just because he made them. I wish Inafune success, but this game will never be Legends to me, just as how Beck will never be Mega Man.

    1. I doubt his will is to replace Legends, the problem is not Inafune, is Capcom. They guy is trying to make the games he wants to make, eriod. Maybe certain vocal fans should ask Capcom to allow Inafune to work with Mega Man.

    2. They did. Inafune wants to make games for Capcom, but he wants to make them on his terms -- something Capcom is apparently strongly opposed to.

    3. Riela, be aware that he is not the creator of Megaman. He is co-creator. Read his statement quote: The real creator was Inafune's mentor, Akira Kitamura.. Inafune himself said that:
''You told me that I am the father of Mega Man, but in fact it was already created when I joined the team at Capcom. My mentor, Akira Kitamura, had already created the character and knew what he wanted to make the game. Therefore, I only participate in its development. When Rockman arrived on the Super Famicon, I asked what if he was given a new look? But the design wasn't accepted and it became the character Zero". -Infafune TGS 2007
''I only did half of the job in creating him. I didn't get to completely design a Mega Man [protagonist] from scratch until Zero (Mega Man X)''..
''Akira Kitamura (A.K.) was the one who came up with the concept and did all the gameplay design on MM1 and 2''

  22. as long it's not a kickstarter project, i'm fine with it.

  23. Is it going to be a anime or game? I'm confused. Why does he reveal things at AE rather the E3?

    1. FACEPALM.. It is going to be a game. I don't know why he reveal at AE.. Maybe he has a reason but it doesn't matter.

    2. They're collaborating with an animation studio, aren't they? It could mean that the game will have animated cutscenes.

    3. I hope that. I loved animated cutscenes like Rockman X3/X4 PSX/Saturn version as well as Rockman 8. :)

Anybody else getting a megaman Legends meets Cowboy bebop Vibe from this trailer?

  25. Actually, He is just co-creator... not a creator of Megaman. The real creator was Inafune's mentor, Akira Kitamura.. Inafune himself said that:

    1. It is still more of an achievement than you might think. Kitamura created the dot graphics for Mega Man, but Inafune created how the character looks like in official art by interpreting the sprite that Kitamura made. If anybody else had come in instead of Inafune, it is possible that Mega Man would look very different today, so do not think his involvement was something minor. But you are right that Kitamura is deserving of credit too.

    2. No that is false Kitamura only had a general idea of what he wanted Mega Man to be like, Keiji drew the sprites did the official and concept artwork, I'd say it is muh more 70-30 in Keiji's favor than 50-50, Keiji was just being humble. Serously he Drew 95% of the concept/official art for the classic series just look at his sketch books.

  26. Wow,look at all these bitter, baseless, and slanderous comments. Is this what the Mega Man fan base has become?! Come on,you are better than that!

  27. Yeesh. What's with all this negativity? This is great! Sure, it's not Legends PER SAY, but since Capcom doesn't seem too interested in continuing Legends, Red Ash seems like a really great alternative. I love the high-tech/steampunk vibe the art style has going on, and I can already tell the characters have a lot of personality to them.
I only have one complaint. More like a nitpik, really.
The main character's hair is...too plain. It kinda looks like Subaru if he got the little doodads on the top of his head lopped off. He needs a little more...oomph to his doo. Longer bangs or a ponytail, for example. Or a different color. Something. Otherwise, I really like his and everyone else' designs. I really am excited for Red Ash and I can't wait to learn more!

    1. Those doodads are the entire foundation of Geo's hair style, you take em off it becomes not his hair style at all, and no he doesn't look anything like Geo, there are so many better examples to choose from. He looks like some Evangelion chick with an animed ben ten head for one.

  29. Noooo!
I wanted Legends 3 to see the story finished! I don't want the gameplay without the story!
    NO SUBSTITUTIONS!

  30. Supporting this shows to capcom that Legends have fans.

But NO you guys keep finding defects to complain about,
