The Educational Mega Man X Game You Never Knew Existed

You may not realize it but new Mega Man games are still being unearthed. With a good 130+ titles on record, the franchise harbors little known software hiding in remote places on earth. Capturing these games on film is the equivalent of documenting an unknown species. In a sense, we are all zoologists.

So here we are today with a rare glimpse of Mega Man X: Math Tornado; a scrappy educational game developed by Strawberry Software Inc. under license by Capcom. This one is about as official as Rockman Strategy, Rockman Gold Empire and other misc. Taiwan-exclusive titles. Rockman Memorial Hall provides us with some excellent footage of this oddity, and while the concept is self explanatory, you have to see this thing moving to believe it. It's ghastly.

One really neat tidbit of trivia, though; this is the only game where X removes his helmet! See it at 1:07!

  1. More like Strawberry Software Forever.

While the audio is clearly rough in the vid, I'm pretty sure Tunnel Rhino has a cruddy MIDI version of The Beatles "Back in the USSR" as his stage music. So, um...guess we know Dopple Town's general location on the globe now. Too bad it didn't feature X4 bosses, for the more obvious Beatles mashup: I am the Rockman. I am Frost Walrus. Pew pew p'pew...

  2. I think this is one of the first times I see x removing the helmet in a game... I imagined he had no hair, only the classic one had since he was built to have more human-powered features. Living and learning.

    1. Wait! In what second X remove his helmet? Is the guy in yellow spandex?

    2. I didn't see X remove his helmet at all in this video...

  3. I have Gold Empire, Rockman Strategy, and also one called Rockmen R: Dr. Wily's Counterattack, but never got a copy of this game. I think the coolest thing here is seeing X take off his helmet. I'm with Magnus - I've never seen him do that before and I've seen some models/action-figures where if you took the helmet off, he simply had a mechanical head underneath. Very interesting indeed.

    1. Just a note, Rockmen R isn't a licensed product like Gold Empire or Strategy. It's really just a fan game made by some dedicated folks in Japan. Therefore it's more in line with Mega Man Unlimited or Mega Man Rockforce than anything else.

    2. Oh, yes, I'm aware of that. Of course, when that game came out I think I paid in the ballpark of $120 USD for a copy of it (2009, I think from Rakuten), but mainly because I really wanted to see a disc copy of the game. Of course, it's since been ripped by several people (I need to reupload it one day myself), and it's still pretty good, but it is quite flawed in many ways too.

Strategy and Gold Empire are interesting conversation pieces at least. I like that GE is sort of like a more modern version of Rockboard. The problem I've had though is that I can't get Strategy to run on a Windows 7 or 8.x computer, while, strangely enough, GE has no problem at all running. =/

  4. Yes. The is the first, AND ONLY game where X removes his helmet. Unfortunately games like this aren't canon. So we're still unknown if X Canonically actually has hair or not. Not to mention after removing his helmet, you don't even see any ear pixels on his head. Just more black hair. I'd imagine if X had hair, you'd at least see human ear somewhere like with classic Mega Man. Though it is interesting to see SOMEONE had some thought about what X COULD look like without it of its time.

  5. I posted info about these ages ago. I dunno how these can still count as "being unearthed."

Actually I really have to upload the graphics I have from these games. They're just so uninteresting after the whole "MM has games I never knew existed" vibe wears off. Yeah, X takes off his helmet. That's about the only really interesting thing.

  6. Nooo! You're weakening my material for the panel I'm trying to set up! (<- It's just dramatics)
Yeah. This particular game is a gem. The helmet thing had me gagging when I saw it in the video I watched.

  7. When does X take it off?

  8. It's been a few years since I found it, but I went ahead and put most of the game images on my site (the rest were even more uninteresting than those in the junk galleries). Here's a link to the various games.

  11. OMG, it is Back in the USSR..... WELP. Never figured Beatles AND Guns and Roses would both be a thing in X games...

Are there any screen shots or bits with X taking off his helmet? I'd like to see that.

    1. Here's a screencap from the video. It's pretty easy to miss because it's very quick and has very few frames.

  12. Hello Protodude!

What we us would do without you?

Thank you for keeping this site alive. Interesting video.

I was thinking if maybe you can make a global calling to all Rockman fans, and see who can bring in information about the rarest Mega Man game ever: Stalemate Dangerous Old Man (actually its not a Rockman game, but RockMan.Exe appears in the game somehow).

I have never seen a screenshot...

    Keep it up!

  14. As I remember, Street Fighter (actually using Pocket Fighter outlook) also appeared in these kind of eduacational software. I saw these software in the book store in Hong Kong long long time ago.
