How to Unlock Extra Content in Battle Network 4 Virtual Console

Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun and Blue Moon have arrived on the North American Wii U Virtual Console. For the completionist out there, here's a couple tips on getting the most from these ports.

  • How to fight Bass XX: You previously needed an e-Reader to fight Bass XX on the GBA. Now all you need is a simple button combination. On the title screen (Red Sun or Blue Moon), press L, Up, and Start. Bass XX will appear in Black Earth area 2 replacing Bass SP.
  • Multiplayer-only Battle Chips: A method introduced in the Virtual Console version of Battle Network 3 Blue and White, all you need to do here is pause your game, go to the Comm. menu, save, and restart. Your pack will contain additional chips from the opposite version. All secret chips (including the Z-Saber) are received except Grand Prix Power, GunSolEX, and Duo.

On the flip side, Mega Man Zero 3's Battle Network 4 connectivity is not supported on Wii U. It was a neat feature that allowed you to fight Battle Network viruses in Cyber Space. Kind of a shame they didn't create a button combination to unlock it here.

Anyway, there you go. We'll likely be seeing more button combos to access hidden boss battles in the Virtual Console versions of MMBN5 and BN6, too.

  1. So, no Grand Prix, no Duo? Well, GunSolEx is unlockable in the lotto trader. Well, is a shame.

    1. The reasoning for GrandPrixPower G and Duo D not being there is because the Card e-Reader+ writes the blank data for the info on those chips on save data.

So there's literately nothing in terms of anything translated or localized for those two chips. If they activated them and brought them up, they would show up blank.

  2. There's no real reason to fight XX compared to ForteSP, it doesn't add anything additional and just does the same in giving you the Title Screen icon for beating SP.

They should have added the entry system in the game communications so that you could have fought opposite version's Soul Navis for having an Boss Navi encounter in every Internet Area in the game.

  3. So they actually changed a couple of things so they would be possible?

Well I guess that is a step, but I honestly wish Nintendo had done that with their other VC re-releases that otherwise required link connection or some other requirement the systems can't emulate now. You can't get some of the extra content because of that.

    1. Capcom did do this for BN3 and most likely will do this for BN5 and 6, if that is what you meant.

    2. And also remember that they did this for BN2, as well. But, I'm not so sure they'll do that for BN5 and 6, though....

    3. Also for Battle Network 2, yes, I love GateSP.

  4. Can anyone confirm if the Woodman scenario was fixed in Blue Moon? It's the version I'm hoping to get since I grew up with it.

  5. I was under the impression that Nintendo had some kind of policy prohibiting publishers from modifying games before they put them on the Virtual Console. Does this mean that they're relaxing it a bit?

    1. You're thinking of Sony, who requires that all PS1 Classics be identical to the final release master that was originally released for the PS1. Nintendo allows for patching, ever since the Virtual Console debuted on the Wii.

  6. I wonder why the Boktai content wasn't cut...

    1. Because Boktai is the bombs, so much so it gets past legal issues.
