Rockman & Forte Heading to JPN Wii U Virtual Console

Good news: Rockman & Forte is coming to Wii U in Japan. Bad news: it's the GBA version.

For the uninitiated, the 2002 port boasts inferior music, washed out colors, cropped screen resolution, and, in the case of the international version, a very peculiar English translation. All in all, the general consensus on this one is pretty low.

In any case, the game is due February 18th for 702 Yen. No word yet on availability in the West, though. We'll keep you posted as we learn more. Stay tuned!

  1. Funny how I was playing an English translated version of the SNES version earlier.

    1. The English translated version of the SNES version was really bad. It had swearing in it but the accurate translated I found from Japanese person said there was no swearing in it. Silly.

    2. The fan translation was excellent, stuff like

Forte: "Nobody will stand in the way of the forging of my legend as the most powerful being in the world!"

      Sounds much better than

Bass: "Everyone knows that I am the mightiest robot in the world." Herp derp

On another topic, I was just playing both the SFC and GBA versions and aside from what was mentioned by Protodude the GBA doesn't have enough sound channels to support the effects that interlace in the game and will often cut music in favor of SFXs, something I have never noticed happening in the SFC version. The SFC version also offered better controls, for example in cases of Forte's dash it is only mapped to double tap forward on the GBA version, which the SFC version has alongside having a face botton mapped, this is important for far jumps that required precision timing and controlled momentum. Examples like this clearly show that the game was built to be played with more buttons than the GBA has.

That's just a few gripes I have with the GBA ver., there are many more. Long story short, the SFC version is easily much better than the GBA version.

  2. I always figured that this would be the case, at least in the U.S., since I didn't think they'd want to go through the trouble of translating, but I thought that Japan would have at least gotten the Super Famicom version.

    1. because it's so much work to translate a megaman game. yes I know there's the cds, but even then it's less than a small (compared to something like an FF game) RPG like pokemon.

    2. I have a fleeting suspicion it might have something to do about the fact that they'd have to modify the SNES ROM/whatever for western virtual console. I have no idea if Nintendo has a policy about it, but Sony for instance didn't like devs modifying the PS1 games for PSN release.

    3. "because it's so much work to translate a megaman game."

That's not what I meant, smartass. I was saying that because there's already a version of the game that's been translated in English, they would simply release that one instead, as they would most likely feel as if translating the SNES game for an eShop release would be redundant.

  3. Do they mean to say Light is a bit of a douche, as in douche bag? If so I didn't know that before, very informative, I'll have to rethink my opinion on him. Unless it is some kind of translation error or something like that.

Anyway I played some of the original's translated ROM and a lot of the GBA port, the SNES one is superior in evey way.

    1. No, if I recall, they mentioned that it was a mistranslation. It's supposed to say naive.

  4. Booo!! Booo!! I will wait for the SFC release. It is the best game ever!

  5. ... why? It's not like there's any additional content in the GBA version. Why port the inferior version? It means less sales, for goodness sake.

  6. Well, that tanks. Why are they releasing something they themselves probably know is inferior? Also, if it's the GBA version, why port it to the Wii U? Why not the 3DS? I know they released plenty of GBA games to the Wii U, but this port is terrible on a handheld alone and it's going to look even more terrible on a TV screen.

  7. "inferior music"

That's pretty subjective. Many people seem to prefer the GBA's version soundtrack, myself included. It sounds far more energetic and feels more appropriate for a Mega Man game compared to the SNES one, thanks to the different instruments used.

    1. Was about to say, but you summed it up. The percussion packs more of a punch on the GBA, I think. Cold Man's stage just rocks, but the SNES's percussion keeps up with that one. Either way, the soundtrack is excellent.

  8. It'll be the GBA version here in the West as it was the only version released in English. Nintendo's virtual console policy is that the game has to ported directly & not changed in any way (this was why Earthbound took forever to be ported if I recall) as for why Japan is only getting the GBA version that I'm not sure why .... Either way be happy that we are getting it! Personally I like Mega Man & Bass for it's challenge alone & it also means that finally all the classic series aside from Wily Wars are easily accessible on current devices (MM8 & MMPU are both available on JP PSN too for PS3 & Vita TV)

    1. Is that Nintendo's actual policy? Because I'm pretty sure Battle Network 2 and 3 altered to accommodate obtaining otherwise unobtainable Battle Chips.

    2. This is Sony's policy, not Nintendo's.

Various Virtual Console games were altered to accommodate legal issue (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/wii-ds-ads-appear-in-vc-version-of-wave-race-64/). What's more, Nintendo retroactively edits "flashing" effects to reduce seizures.

    3. ^ My bad this is true in fact I believe Mega Man 2 had it's flashing effects reduced, still I doubt Capcom would really put the effort into porting the SFC version for us sadly but hey if we're getting it then that's good enough for now

  9. The original SNES music really wasn't that better, IMO.

    1. The SFC version sounds much better to me. The GBA version sounds like really loud, screechy, hash, and super simplified low bit arrangements. It just sounds so empty and bland like Toshihiko's classic Robot Master arrangements for EXE 4.5, those were awful or should be considered so by majority standards.
