New Mega Man Goods Are the Most Random Yet

We've seen a lot of random Mega Man paraphernalia over the years... but some of these, man, I don't even know. We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

Addressing the headlining image right now, that's tape. Mega Man-inspired masking tape. It's headed to Japan in late February for 600 yen (roughly $6USD). It'll be available in two varieties, each measuring 15mm x 10 in length. Use it to box up your remaining hopes and dreams.

Woven bracelets. February 26, 1,188 yen a pop ($10).

Set of eight charms. These are about 80mm across, due in March. Truth be told it's nice to see Battle Network and even Legends represented. More here.

From GE Animation, we have a Servbot iPhone case, a knitted cellphone bag, and a Servbot lanyard. That last one you can use for, I don't know, lanyard stuff?

Look, electronic Mega Busters and sick Mega Man X figures are great. That's merchandise people actually want (opinions may vary). But little things like these... I'm just not sure anymore.

Thanks for the tip, Eric.

  1. I thought we weren't allowed to complain about Mega Man merchandise and here even you're doing it now.

    1. It's just discouraged here in general, to keep a positive air about the series.

That said, I know these are sort of eh, but I like the X/Zero and BN charms' designs. But wouldn't buy a charm.

    2. It's not so much a complaint as a concern. I think Protodude here wants a new game like anybody, and when you see oddball merch peek it's head out, it's kind of puzzling. On one hand, you want to see the money used on the merch's production to be spent and well so on a new game! Maybe even a new show! On the other hand, if no money is made...Hence folk that say Capcom will get no money, greedy, stupid Crapcom, boycott, all that, then you have to think like a business! If they can't make money with cheap merchandise (the expensive figures I would hope be excluded as people tend to be hesitant to drop $40-$80 on toys), then how could they make money from a game?

    3. I'd like to know how long the fans are supposed to put up with that.

How long do we have to support whatever junk they will slap a Mega Man image on before they maybe possibly even consider making a game? It's been years now. They still make merchandise because it sells. You'd think we would have heard something by now.

But it's always more merchandise and it's always "buy the merchandise, don't complain, or you'll never get a chance at a game being considered maybe" or something along those lines.

    4. Capcom, unfortunately, has lost quite a lot of money in the past few years. A year ago, they only had 152 million left in funds. And for a big, well-known game developer like Capcom, that's a very small amount. And when you have multiple big name franchises to keep up and unhappy fandoms to cater to (it's not just the MM fandom), then it's a lot of pressure and a lot of juggle work to maintain. It's not easy.

Unfortunately, Mega Man is a niche series at best now, and the only reason we saw Legends 3 and Universe announced was because of Inafune's influence. Capcom's short funds mean they can really only afford to pour so much into the MM series, and unfortunately for us, that means merchandise and cheap iOS app games. Stuff that's probably more accepted in Japan, at least with the phone app market. But even that didn't last for too long. At least I can commend Capcom for at least giving Xover a chance instead of outright cancelling it before release. I truly believe that Xover will be the last MM game we will be seeing for awhile, if ever. And if they do bring out another one, chances are it's going to be another iOS app game.

History shows that boycotts have worked in the past, but that does not mean they all work. Capcom deserved the fan backlash for their poor decisions and planning, don't get me wrong. But don't expect them to produce a good game out of it.

And yes, I know, I KNOW, that we're getting Street Fighter V and that Ace Attorney game that takes place in the UK and that Capcom technically still has money. I know. Still doesn't make your "GAMES CAPCOM?" any more realistic.

    5. I'm just waiting for Capcom to crash and burn so Nintendo can get their hands on the franchise. If Smash taught me anything, it's that a Megaman game headed by Nintendo would be the Hyper Bomb!

  2. Printed tape's apparently somewhat popular nowadays. A bunch of craft people call it Washi Tape, but I have no idea what they'd even use it for. Maybe it's for making sculptures out of like duct tape or ribbons for people who gift wrap things but for whatever reason can't tie ribbon. I have no idea, really.

    1. I saw it and immediately thought of Washi Tape, as well. It's something that's typically used in scrapbooking and card-making. ;)

  3. Looking at the provided links it seems that, apart from the charms, the oddball e-Capcom items are not singular Rockman releases, but from product lines that cover various Capcom series - the Washi Tape and bracelets are actually all available in Ace Attorney, Monster Hunter, and Sengoku Basara designs, as well.

  4. Tape? Okay, I've got nothing to defend that. That's just sad. =\ The other things are passable, but tape???

Give me more figures and plushes! If they want to make stuff like that, give me new, never before seen art!

    1. The tape is used for patching the hole that used to be where new Mega Man games were placed! See? 8-bit just like the last two games, only now you pretend to play! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....
*Sits in a Rockman Corner and cries*

Seriously, I'd get the Servbot thing. Maybe one of the other things, too.

  6. I just want more things in general that have Zero in it.

  7. Not gonna lie, I kinda want that Netto and Rock selfie charm...

  8. Holy crap! Something that doesn't have NES-style sprites on it!

    I'll take 12.

  9. The least Capcom could do is put out more retro games on services like XBLA and PSN...the fact that Rockman Complete Works 5 and 6 aren't available in America is ridiculous, and there's no good reason why we shouldn't get 8 either.
