Happy 27th Anniversary, Rockman!

It's December 17th in Japan, and today marks the 27th anniversary of Rockman. Sadly, there really isn't much going other than a bevy of classic titles hitting the Japanese PSN and Wii U. Hopefully we'll be seeing some of that on our end. Mega Man Zero might be up on the North American eShop this week but other than that, we're probably in for a quiet one.

I wanted to keep this post light and breezy, so I'll just say that despite the lack of new games and such, I'm thankful for Mega Man's appearance in Smash. It's been great to see this icon thrive among Nintendo's best, and I hope it will pave the way to a brighter future. Nintendo did a damn fine job here and I know I'm not alone when I say, "I want more."

I leave you with the above celebratory piece from Rockman Megamix author/illustrator Hitoshi Ariga. For comparison, here's Capcom's.

Peace out, home-fries.

  1. *Looks at Ariga's pic* Hey, that's neat! Now lets see Capcom's one
*Clicks the link* Oh congratulations, you know how to use Sprites-inc too ;)

    Anyway, Happy Birthday, Rockman :D

    2. I gotta give them credit, I thought it was just going to be a "27" in Comic Sans font.
It's nice to know not ALL of their efforts have been poured into more Resident Evil games and a P.O.S. Street Fighter PC/PS4 exclusive.

  2. Ariga, don't quit your day job of working on Pokemon and getting easy money and automatic fan love. Every single prominent Pixiv Rockman fan artist blows this guy out that park and around the world several times over, without butchering the established designs.

Anyway yeah happy good one Mega Man, you have some of the worst luck in all video games, but I hope it gets better.

    1. Hope is for people with no pattern recognition skills.

Which given so much of Mega Man is learning patterns, I'm surprised people here have any hope at all.

One of Ariga's dream jobs was working for Pokemon.

He didn't butcher designs, every artist has their own style and this is nothing new to any of the MegaMan Manga.

If you're gonna talk shit about someone get your facts straight.

How does that change/effect my statement, or what does that have to do with anything? He shouldn't quit his "dream job" .

No other official manga artist changed the Mega Man designs. No one is talking about style (even though I personally think his sucks), the most another manga artist did was deform the established designs thus changing them in "their own style" same like MM's official artists. For example Shigeto Ikehara uses the designs in the style of something like Astro Boy, with all of Rockman's features in tact, he doesn't add steam-punk features like exposed screws, pipes, changed body armor parts etc that weren't there before. Ariga's designs are sometimes as or more different from their classic counterparts than the Battle Network designs. Not only that but some of the characters that have established personalities, he then takes them into a completely different direction. Plus yes he most definitely butchers the designs for me, not because of changing them, but the way he changes them. I love Smash Mega Man (which altered his design) for example.

If you're gonna hype this guy up to me, get your facts straight.

    4. You put all that negative emphasis on "change (at all)" and then try to claim that it's only the WAY Mr. Ariga tweaked things (for his ALTERNATE CONTINUITY) that annoys you? Not buying it.

    5. The emphasis is still on changing the designs. What the heck??? I also don't care if you're not buying my opinions, I never thought they were for sale to begin with, just on display.

  4. The only quote that comes to mind is from Monty Python : "Let's not bicker & argue about who killed who, this is supposed to be a happy occasion!"

I'm still going to be optimistic for next year, every recent franchise from Capcom has had something crop up over the past few weeks be it Street Fighter 5, Resident Evil getting an HD re-release of REmake + Revelations 2, Devil May Cry 4 & DmC getting remastered, the remastered Phoenix Wright trilogy on 3DS etc as well as Monster Hunter 4 which has somewhat of a Blue Bomber cameo... I'm hopeful that maybe something will happen.. I agree with Protodude's sentiment too Nintendo & Namco did one hell of a job putting Mega Man in Smash, maybe more people will become interested in the character due to it! If all else fails there's probably still more re-releases to come on WiiU & possibly PSN, we've got that pretty cool looking 13 inch statue coming, the comic is still going & who knows what else.. guess we'll just have to wait & see....

Either way Happy Anniversary to the character that started it all for me, I'm off to marathon the classic series again!

Don't forget that the second Sound Box is relased today, featuring music from the Game Boy series, The Wily Wars (spread across two discs), Mega Man & Bass (both the SNES and GBA versions), MM&B for Wonderswan (How's that for obscure?), Powered Up, The Power Battle (both CPS1 and CPS2 versions), Battle & Fighters, The Power Fighters, Rockboard, Mega Man's Soccer, and Battle & Chase.

  7. I should really do something Mega Man-related today... Too bad my Playstation 2 isn't feeling too good, otherwise I'd whip through the 10th Anniversary game, Mega Man 8, real quick. :<
