Fans Aim To Recreate Mega Man Legends 3 In Unity (Update)

While fans all over the world would love nothing more than for Capcom to continue the development of Mega Man Legends 3, a small band of developers in Japan are taking matters into his own hands. Headed up by a one Kobun No. 0, team JisakuDASH3 aim to recreate Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version in Unity3D. You can check out a trailer for the project above. If you're in a hurry, skip to 4:27 for gameplay.

To recapture the look of Prototype Version, the crew are carefully researching old screenshots, videos and other media. The models of Barett and Aero are official assets, yielding from Capcom's defunct Devroom. Some of the other models, like Teomo City, are being provided by fAB of "Tuttle's Legendary Travels" fame. Together, they're working to create a genuine experience.

UPDATE: According to Nintendo Life, the team are looking for assistance from those skilled in programming, sound, and music. They hope to recruit English speaking volunteers for, what we hope will be, an English language version of the game.

You can keep tabs on the game's development at the official website here. And while you're at it, follow them on Twitter too! We'll be keeping an ear out for more news too, of course. Stay tuned!

  1. I wonder if any of these Legends 3 advocates have ever seen Sunset Blvd...

  2. Wow! This is amazing. The movie makes it look like they've come a long way already. The dates on the official website all suggest it was only opened today.
I wonder what's happening in the other parts of the movie. Maybe someone can translate it, if there's anything noteworthy. Very exciting stuff.

    2. Doesn't have to be profitable. If a company finds any use of an IP of theirs to not be in their best interest, they'll send out one of those lovely letters. Usually, it's a use of their property that rivals or exceeds the quality of official releases. Of course, there's other variables as well, such as the classic trademark and copyright issues. A good example of such is the cancellation of "Chrono Trigger Resurrection". Square just didn't want it to happen, so it didn't happen, and they themselves never filled the void. It's a shame.

I'm assuming Capcom is more lax nowadays, what with titles like Mega Man Unlimited an Mega Man X Corrupted. I especially surprised about the latter. Dunno how they'll feel about this Dash 3 remake, but hopefully, like Dashe said below, they take it as a hint!

    3. Nowadays Capcom is lax even in the creation of games. ;P
But I hope they don't stopt it. Square is so tight in this sense, it would be good if they worked together with the fans in a similar way to the mobile Sonic CD and Street Fighter x Mega Man.

  6. It looks pretty cool. If they manage to get a build or two (or a finished product) out without getting C&D'd, great.

If not, then at least it ought to send the branch of Capcom that needs to hear that Mega Man Legends is a viable IP the message we've been trying to send them all this time. I don't know about you guys, but I could stand to watch a handful of game design groups consistently hack at 'em with projects that look better than the source material.

I'm not expecting development to update frequently at all, but hey, the more the merrier, right?

    1. I know you love Legends and all, but there can be no Legends games if Capcom doesn't even care about the entire MM franchise itself, which they don't. Sad time to be a fan of any MM series.

Will say though that the project looks cool. Very well made for a fan project.

    2. I can't help my interests. Let me like what I like without having to feel like I'm obligated to care about things I don't, alright? "I know you love Legends, but" phrases like that aren't going to do much for that cross-series support you're saying we need to be giving each other.

      Delete
    3. Of course not. I was only just saying. But it does come off as pretentious.

Much as *I* also do like Legends and all, I have more or less given up all hope on it. Unless Capcom can get their act together, which they probably won't, then there honestly isn't much that can be hoped for. For anything, really. Legends, as of now and possibly ever, has become a lost cause.

    4. Responses like that Dashe and the general treatment of MMLS members are one of the reasons I no longer visit MMLS despite being a big MML fan. Regardless of what you think Legends wouldn't be around if it weren't for the original series. If the original series dies so will Legends. And honestly I don't have any faith in Capcom either. They've not only changed the Resident Evil series but other IP's as well and with their constant rehashes of the same thing over and over again under a different title makes me bitter towards a company. The last time I bought a new Capcom game was a long time ago.

    5. But is saying this sort of stuff REALLY appropriate in a news post about a Mega Man Legends 3 fangame? What do you hope to accomplish by trying to make me (and other people who just like Legends) feel bad about not being too interested in everything else?

I'm not going around bashing people for liking Classic, as much as some people might make me want to. I just happen to not care too much about it. I certainly wouldn't wish bad sales on it or anything, but I wouldn't buy a game console for it (which I'd need to in order to support it). There's no good reason to give me a hard time because I can't bring myself to like something I don't like.

It'd be one thing if I were to go to every post Protodude's made about the Classic series and complaining that it wasn't Legends, but I'm not doing that. I just respond to things that interest me. The least you could do is let me voice my own interests in a relevant area, in a positive way, without making me feel lousy for having a preference.

    6. I really don't care if you like the other series or not everyone has their own opinions likes and dislikes I generally only liked Megaman 2 and 8 out of the classic series. Your attitude and general way you've treated other people is what annoys me. I remember iscribble I was there often. But this is neither the time nor place for me to mention that. I'm still glad I left after seeing what goes on behind the scenes.

    7. It's not about you not liking something else. I don't give a damn that you don't like the Classic series, or X, or EXE, or even Mighty No 9, or what have you.

This is about having a realistic mindset.

I like Legends, and I would still like Capcom to reconsider it. But see how I only used the word 'like'. I know that I cannot really hope for that, for I know that Capcom would never reconsider it much like the rest of the franchise. That is a realistic mindset. If Capcom sure as heck doesn't care about the other, more popular series that are well more famed than an admittingly niche sub-series like Legends, then there is no way in hell that they're going to care about Legends. Trege already explained my thoughts in greater detail. You cannot just expect Capcom to want to reconsider Legends when it's obvious that they feel that Mega Man in-general, or even their way more popular other franchises, are just not good enough to invest real time and money in anymore. Capcom has changed all over, and for the worst.

The good thing though is that we DO at least have fan made projects like this. And since Capcom won't do anything themselves, that's all we can hope for. Hoping for good fan games is by far different than hoping Capcom will take charge. The most we can hope from Capcom anymore is that they don't begin sending cease and desist letters all over the place.

    8. I don't have much hope for Capcom either. To be frank I am hoping they go under. I'm hoping that Inafune gets the capital to reinvision a spinoff like Gunvolt or MN9. We've probably just had a misunderstanding with our choices of wording, which happens.

My point is in response to those people all over the net going "Capcom's going to pull a C&D!" in response to this. It seemed necessary to remind everyone that it might not be all bad if they do. You wouldn't want people to just stop making these ambitious fan projects because they're worried about getting a C&D, would you?

There's really nothing unrealistic about being able to look at something like a potential for a C&D--not a completely unfounded one, either--and spin it so it doesn't completely crush your expectations or make this team's work seem like a waste. I'd be more concerned about the people claiming that they're weeping tears of joy over this if we're talking about unrealistic expectations.

    9. Gosh MML sucks, the game, character designs, music all of it. It's a toxic I wish never existed under the MM/RM brand. Most of all though the community around it is bad and some people are glaring examples and ambassadors of this.

  8. Capcom has actually been really, really hands off on enforcing their ownership of the Mega Man IP, actually. Quite a few fangames have come and gone in the last year or so with a fair amount of exposure among them, and Capcom has yet to step up and say 'no, stop it.'

Mega Man Unlimited, Mega Man Rock Force, Mega Man Revolution, Super Mega Man 3, Mega Man 42... a few released demos of games that have yet to be fully complete... quite a number, and Capcom has yet to pounce at any one of them to my knowledge.

I'm hoping they stay cool with the fans all playing around with the IP.

  9. I was going to come in here and groan about the use of Unity3D and the fact that DASH fans can't seem to let go (says the guy who's still whining over Mega Man Universe...), but honestly speaking, if all that gameplay footage is live stuff they've already programmed in... I'm extremely impressed.
Unity3D games are usually more like "X Generator 201X" or "Slender", but this thing seems to be a spot-on accurate Rockman DASH engine built from the ground up for maximum control and playability. Not to mention the graphics looks pretty darn great.

I sincerely hope this thing takes off and they keep working on it. It would be interesting to see what their take on the Rockman DASH 3 story is. (Rather, the things in between the start and finish.)

  11. If this turns out well it will make me wonder about everything.

Fans have already made some great games styled after the Classic series. Then there is Mega Man X Corrupted, Mega Man Battle Network Chrono X, and now this.

If those other three games turn out well, I'm not sure how I would feel. It would prove that fans are capable of making games in the style of at least 4 of the different Mega Man series. The question that begs in my mind is what do we need Capcom for? The only answer that comes to mind is, for them to not shut down these projects.

  12. That project actually looks pretty good. Hopefully they succeed. I can't wait to see how far it gets given quite a few fan games have made good progress lately.

  13. Has Barrett. It is already ruined. Barrett was planned by Capcom as a replacement for Megaman. They were going to cut down Megaman's playtime in MML3 in favor of Barrett. They were going to do this in order to market Barrett. When they saw that Barrett was not being accepted widely by former fans (who would be used to shore up sales of what was essentially a new IP) they canceled the game.

STOP CONTINUING TO MARKET CAPCOM's TERRIBLE MEGAMAN REPLACEMENT!

    1. You can't be serious. Right?

    2. I guarantee you, that's not why it was cancelled.

      Delete
    3. I guarantee you are only holding to part of what happened and are oblivious to the rest. It may be an exaggeration that it was cancelled because of that. However that is still what they intended Barrett to do. Replace Megaman. If Barrett had been popular enough (as Capcom desired) then more people would have supported the project. I for one did not because I respected and enjoyed the originals which did not shoehorn in new protagonists to make a game more marketable.

You were duped by Capcom PR, and you don't even realize it.

      Delete
    4. Wow. Paranoid much?

If you followed Legends 3 at all, you'd know Barrett was Barrell Caskett from the past. The character is directly connected to the treasure called Klicke Lafonica. Volnutt is still on the moon during the events of the Prototype. We know, for a fact, BOTH characters would be playable in Legends 3 itself. Oh, and did you also forget that a HUGE part of the Prototype's community-driven campaign was VOTING ON VOLNUTT's DESIGN?

The Prototype was cancelled because no one joined the Devroom. Period. Capcom stupidly gauged interest in the series based on how many people joined the Devroom. What's more, without Inafune's voice of reason, the project floundered.

But back to you. Barrett exists for theses reasons A: to introduce new players to the world and gampleay mechanics of Legends and B: he is a plot device to a treasure directly linked to Barrell's disappearance and, perhaps, the Elder System.

      Delete
    5. Barrett being Barrell from the past was never indicated during development. Speculation != fact. However it is a fact that Capcom was replacing half of Megaman's playtime (more if you count Prototype) with a new character specifically designed to be cool. You try to handwave this with flimsy PR reasoning put out by Capcom to ease fears of fans. It doesn't make them true. Their actions during development reflect what I have said. Barrett was stealing Megaman's place in the game that we all waited on. That is a fact.

      Delete
    6. Look who's talking: "Speculation != fact."

Everything you are spouting is pure speculation. Nowhere has it ever been cited nor HINTED Barrett is the sole reason it was canned. Your theory is incredibly irrational even from a marketing standpoint. I mean for crying out loud, no one knows who Barrett is. Mega Man is the name of the brand and it's Mega Man people want. Barrett is just a character. He wasn't designed to carry the game.

    7. I'm sorry I didn't realize it was outlandish for a company who has the goal of making money to try and make money. They don't have loyalty to a character. Only a fan would. Which is why they would lie about the nature of the changes they were making. It's hilarious that you believe a made up fact like Barrett = Barrell spread by fans, but not my pointing out the FACTS regarding MML3: Prototype and MML3. Look if you like Barrett then just say you do. You don't have to act like a complete ass just because I'm saying something about him that you do not like. Though, If it bothers you that they would do this then maybe you should explore why that bothers you and then examine the facts a bit more closely. I'll give you a hint about life. Conspiracies happen all the time.

    8. Please provide facts, quotes and data to back up your point, please. Because otherwise, you're writing speculation off as legitimate facts.

      Delete
    9. It is a fact that:

1: Barrett was introduced when the Megaman franchise was in trouble with Capcom and when Capcom was in financial trouble.
2: Barrett was the ONLY playable character for MML3: Prototype. That's legitimate fact and I'm not going to spoon feed you the quotes to prove it. If you don't know it then you never followed the dev room.
3: Barrett was confirmed as playable in MML3 as well. The quote in question says EQUALLY playable as Megaman. Which implies at least half the game time would be Barrett.
4: MOST of the development time for MML3 was spent on Barrett and his gang. All the original characters took a backseat and PARTICULARLY Megaman.

They didn't come straight out and say "Barrett is replacing Megaman". Why would they? That would piss off MML fans. No it is far easier to introduce a new character beside him and then hype that character up until he dominates the series. Kinda like Zero in Megaman X only worse because he wasn't introduced at the beginning of the series. It's more like Raiden in MGS2. A character used in an attempt to appeal broadly to players who didn't like Snake's gruffness (mostly Japanese players). Barrett is the exact same kind of ploy. You can choose not to believe this, but its obvious to anyone who isn't blinded by desperation.

    anyhow.

i admire the spirit behind this fan-made game... but not much else. i look at a computer and 3d renderings all day. looks fan-made, need someone to do better character models and more fluid movement.

can't say i'm optimistic this doesn't get capcom all hot and bothered, either. a very tall order.

Since the ps3 games have fallen into nothing but graphics and no content unless you pay extra for it. Incomplete and no sequel until the next console...
