Super Smash Bros. Direct: Mega Man News Roundup

The Super Smash Bros. focused Direct has come and gone, and we got plenty of updates on both Wii U and 3DS versions. As anticipated, there were a few new Mega Man related details including the full scoop on the his move set and Final Smash (pictured above), the Yellow Devil stage hazard, and more.

Hit the jump below for all the details!

The direct itself:

And the lowdown (with timestamps):

  • (6:10) THE YELLOW DEVIL: Mega Man's stage is the "Wily Castle." The castle in the background is from Mega Man 2... and in the distance, you'll spot something flying out! It's the Yellow Devil! As its body assembles, it obstructs the fighters. The Yellow Devil attacks the fighters but they can also counterattack. It's only vulnerable spot is its eye... and if you manage to defeat him, there's a big explosion. The explosion becomes an attack for the player who delivered the final blow to the Yellow Devil! In multiplayer, it becomes a competition to see which player takes down the Yellow Devil first.

  • (15:37) ELEC MAN ASSIST TROPHY:  Elec Man joins the brawl as Mega Man's assist trophy. He hops around the stage unleashing a few jolts of Thunder Beam!

  • (28:35) MEGA MAN's MOVE SET:

    • Strong down attack: Sliding (Mega Man 3)
    • Dash attack: Top Spin (Mega Man 3)
    • Strong up attack: Mega Upper (Marvel Vs. Capcom)
    • Side smash attack: Charge Shot (Mega Man 4)
    • Up smash attack: Spark Shot (Mega Man 3)
    • Down smash attack: Flame Blast (Mega Man 6)
    • Front air attack: Flame Sword (Mega Man 8)
    • back air attack: Slash Claw (Mega Man 7)
    • Up air attack: Air Shooter (Mega Man 2)
    • Down air attack: Hard Knuckle (Mega Man 3)
    • Grab: Super Arm (Mega Man 1)
    • Neutral special attack: Metal Blade (Mega Man 2)
    • Side special attack: Crash Bomber (Mega Man 2)
    • Down special attack: Leaf Shield (Mega Man 2)
    • Up special attack: Rush Coil (Mega Man 3)

  • (29:19) MEGA MAN's FINAL SMASH: Mega Man is joined by the likes of Mega Man X, Mega Man.EXE, Mega Man Volnutt and Star Force Mega Man for one big final blast!

  •  (33:56) Mettaurs show up as a common enemy in the 3DS exclusive mode "Smash Run."

Well, that's all there is to say for now. Some very cool reveals but certainly not the last. With the 3DS version due this summer and Wii U this winter, there's plenty of time for more surprises.

Please be sure to watch the Direct for all of today's announcements!

  1. So Nintendo got permission to use all of those different versions of Mega Man, as well as Elec Man, and the Mettaur?

I really appreciate the effort. Game looks great. Can't wait.

    4. Nintendo does what Capcom can't literally. Not every company has a high multi-billion dollar franchise let alone 2 one of which is guaranteed to sell despite what little investment was put into its development. Not every company owns dominating gaming hardware in the handheld department and leading gaming consoles in the home market. Lastly and most importantly, not every company is lucky enough to have millions upon, millions, upon millions, upon millions...continue this another 50-90 or so times hardcore dedicated fanboys at their "beck and call" ready to support them and do so at all costs.

So yeah "Nintendoes what Capcan't" is the obvious statement of the year.

    5. @Anon 2: I never said (or implied) that Nintendo does absolutely everything right for all their franchises, and I think your condescending tone to be unnecessary. It would be nice for them to show some love to Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero for once--on that we're agreed.

@Anon 4: It's not that, though. Capcom literally hasn't done anything with the franchise for years except a fanmade game, a poorly received iOS game, some soundtracks, cameos, and that's it. They don't have to use HD or a multi-million dollar budget. Just give us a proper Mega Man game again. Bring back Legends 3. Do something to show they still give a crap about MM. That's all most fans are asking.

    6. @Andrew: I'm not sure about you, but saying "THIS is how you show love to a beloved, longstanding franchise" is just asking for someone to remind you that Nintendo isn't quite a saint themselves in that department. Also, condescending and sarcasm (what I was actually using) aren't synonyms.

But yes, I do agree about the lesser Nintendo franchises needing more love. I've been holding out for a new F-Zero for god knows how long, but apparently Nintendo doesn't think they can do anything with the series anymore.

    7. @Anon: But just because I point out one instance where Nintendo definitely gets it right doesn't mean I'm implying they get it right every single time. I would think that'd be obvious?

    8. Well, I guess you just have to see things from my perspective here. People worshiping Nintendo, endlessly parading about how they can do no wrong, backing every single idea they have even when it's pretty stupid, etc. etc.

I wasn't trying to start anything here, I just wanted to get a word in before the ridiculous Nintendo fanboys showed up and praised Nintendo for clearly being the gods they are.

  10. All this news sounds cool. Elec Man as an assist is awesome. The Wily Stage level is pretty much what I expected it would be. A great move set...

But that final smash just irks me. The alleged need to include the lesser Megaman spin-offs into everything is akin to a virus that targets great things and gradually degrades them until they lose their uniqueness, their nostalgic appeal and their quality.

Pah, yea right. and besides, not counting Model X since ZX forces Model ZX permanently, therefore being a psudo-Zero, there are no other standard blue Mega Men. At least this way it also represents all of Nintendo's consoles, with Classic and X covering NES/SNES/GB/GBC, Legends and N64/ and EXE and StarForce covering the Gamecube/GBA/DS. It all comes full circle.

  11. Okay. I know at least one person is going to take this personally, but Rock's Final Smash is just a glorified version of Samus' Final Smash from Brawl? That is so disappointing... They could have gone the Super Sonic route and gave him the Super Adapter. Or they could have made him do some sort of hyper-charged Double Buster... but no. He instead calls all the various "incarnations" of himself down to do a group Hyper Charge Shot attack. How boring...

I'm also slightly disappointed by the move set. I know it's to be expected, but most of the moves come from the second and third games. But I guess it can't be helped. At least Top Spin is in there though! And Rock Upper.

There was also a missed opportunity with the Assist Trophy in that it could have been a random robot call, like the Poké Ball. But I suppose that would've over-saturated the game with Rockman, so fair enough.

    2. While the Final Smash, as is, is exceedingly cool as a tribute of sorts, I was hoping for the Super Adapter enhancement as well. In fact, I thought it was a certainty what with Rush being prominent and helpful.

Though how a Super Adapter smash would work is the question. Its maneuverability could be close to Pit's now removed gliding mechanic, and the attack could be a bunch of Hard Knuckles from above. Other than that, there's not too much to say about the Super Adapter...but they could have got creative!

Hopefully more major characters are represented as assist trophies, like Blues and Bass. Although I have a feeling a lot of Mega Man characters will be relegated to standard trophies.

    3. We have no idea if Megaman's final smash works like Samus's final smash, or how it works at all, and I don't know where you got the impression that we do. From just what we've seen I'd guess it's more like Captian Falcon's--you trap them and then hit them in a cinematic--but it's impossible to tell. Even if it's a beam attack there's still room for variety. Mario, Lucario, Samus, and Zelda all have different distinct beam based final smashes in Brawl, and I might be forgetting someone. I really don't see why you'd think a hyper-charged double buster would be any less likely to be like Samus's final smash. I also don't see why it'd be more interesting or why this is boring but that's opinion. The fact that most people are flipping their lids in joy about it at least implies that it was good decision for most people.

I do agree he could have more diverse sources for his attacks. It does make for a really good Smashbros. move list, but they could have swapped out some of the attacks from 2/3 for analogous attacks from other games easily enough.

Megaman having it's own pokeball would be WAY too much but the 3rd parties might get more than one assist trophy this time, since the first parties seem to be getting a lot more. Metroid already jumped from 1 to 4.

      Delete
    4. I'm pretty okay with Elec Man being picked as the Assist Trophy for the series, if we're only getting one. I imagine Sakurai would've eyed one of the boss characters to begin with (as their movements would be distinctive and recognizable, and also easy to recreate and translate to fit seamlessly into Smash).

It's doubly cool that he ended up going with, if I recall, Inafune's favorite of the first game's cast. I'm impressed with what I saw of them, too - the delay between posing and firing seems absolutely spot on. Wouldn't be surprised if he accidentally tossed himself off the side of the stage a lot, though, haha.

On the subject of the Final Smash... if he got a Super Adaptor FS, people would have complained about /that/ and wanted something 'more original than another Super Sonic or Flying Yoshi.' I don't think it's possible to make everyone happy with every decision, but I'm pretty satisfied with the portrayal from all I've seen.

  12. NINTENDO HAS MORE RESPECT FOR THIS FRANCHISE THAN CAPCOM EVER COULD!!!!
I keep hoping that nintendo will pull a bayonetta 2 and offer to pay for the development of a megaman game for nintendo consoles so capcom would have nothing to lose in making a megaman game.
I would say megaman, like Sonic would have the best audience on nintendo.

  14. meh, not sure if my post got lost or not...
I went on a tangent on how Nintendo respects the blue bomber more than Capcom and how Nintendo should reach out to Capcom and offer to pay for the development of a new Megaman game ( like how they reached out to platinum games and paid for the development for Bayonetta 2) that's exclusive to the Wii U/3DS.

  15. I'm digging all the stuff they showed....But, while the Final Smash for MegaMan is awesome for having 5 Mega's, I was actually hoping for Hyper MegaMan from MvC. I know still just a glorified beam shot but it'd be sweet to see in smash :/

    2. Oh yeah I remember holding aim in both games running in circles and shooting at nearly every single enemy in the game to beat them rinse&repeat. Oh yeah I remember what a wussy role reverse eggs making personality, higher pitched voice than his sister MML2's protagonist had. I remember the awkward sexual content fan service in the 2nd game, which undoubtedly was inspired by the perverted lead artist that not more then a year later was drawing porn for. I remember the drab boring or sometimes completely unoriginal music played throughout the games.

Man don't tell me about MML1&2 I've played those and beaten those easy butt games more than you can imagine. Fun fact, back in the day I was one of the the few defending that game I had to lie to myself to do it but I did it cause I loved the franchise. Now tho F*** MML ever since it hasn't gotten a release in forever and the MML3 fiasco every fraud and their mom pops out of nowhere to point out how every single little thing ever is the greatest thing about the series. Man I use to force myself to being OK with that series but now I am a fraud no more. I never want to see it again.

Sorry for the anger me genuinely not liking the character and you telling me otherwise just got to me.

    5. First Anon...whether its running in circles to destroy enemies, or firing straight and hopping over projectiles, it's all rinse and repeat. I will admit while Legends 2 seemed a bit easier than its predecessor, it was still a highly underrated, beautifully crafted game. Music uninspired? Not really. A lot of it was effective ambiance for the dungeons while there was a great classical/fusion flavor for outside of them. Really contributed to the overall feel of the series.

I also think the voice of Volnutt fit the way he looked in 2. And what's with the artist and pornography claims? lol yeah, the awkward scene is definitely a deal breaker on how good the game is.

      Delete
    6. 1. No it is not. In the 2d games the patterns differ the "platforming" enemy fire/attack patterns, variations in level design dictates when to jump and shoot. In Legends most of the time you literally just L/Z target and run around 86% of the enemies the few exceptions being the enemies with stages that have obstacle platforms or lock you in place drastically hindering your movement, and guess what? Those were the challenging stages, terrible gameplay in their own right IMO but a little more challenging.

      2. They were both equally easy heck I'll go as far as to say the first game was easier for me. If you want I'll make a youtube runthrough of the game beating it in a very short time exploiting cheap tactics if none has done it before.

      3. As for the classical music. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4kTei0XrCs just for example has been used in many pieces of entertainment before being featured in Legends 2 not even remixed or anything just a straight up licensed piece. That's just one example there are several other instances. That is what I mean by unoriginal. I also stand by my drab and boring music statement. Tell me how https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyFcSHHdIQE this piece imposes an ambiances and strong sense of atmosphere while upholding a good melody, a proper loop rate for its play time and good use of instrumentation? I'll tell you why because the composers were inspired by the game.

      4. If you are OK with Volnutt's voice in the second game that's up to you, but I personally want my 14-15 y/o male protagonists to sound and act like one. Having your adopted sister have more tone of bass in her voice doesn't do the trick for me. I will admit that Legends 1 had a fantastic character personalty and voice tho. L2 on the other hand IMO is garbage.

Lastly I'd link to some drawings of Hideki Ishikawa doing what he does with the females of the series (some of which are children) released around the time of MML2 but it'll be inappropriate. This combine with the sexual content in the second game signifies the state of mind the lead art direction was led with, to some degree.

      Delete
    7. 1 & 2). Your complains seem to steam from you expecting Legends to be tough like Classic and X. Legends is adventure-rpg like Zelda and is general as easy.

      3) The music did it's good of setting the atmosphere for the areas.

4). Just one of the flaws of have child actors. Legends 1 had a 14 yr old male. But by the time of Legends 2, his voice changed and they couldn't find another one in time. It sucks but big deal. Rock didn't have much dialogue anyway.

      5) You trying to make Hideki Ishikawa's unofficial artwork a fault is just prudish. So they pushed a bit with sexual content in Legends 2. It's not unlike how Ruto and the Fairy Queens from Zelda OoT or Marino's boobs from XCM. Three little scenes doesn't make this DOA. Ishikawa is a freelance artist that made the character designs and nothing else.

You don't have to like the games. But you are trying to make things sound 10x worse than they really are. Call Volnutt a eyesore means you have issues.

      Delete
    8. 1.Nope they are just plain easy to me. Oh and I think OoT had an excellent battle system, with the locking system being dead on and keeping the variation with battles among many enemies and obstacles interesting. I also found that the game was overall harder than Legneds1&2. I thought Majora's Mask on the other hand perfected everything in terms of battle engine and design from OoT.

      2. The music (if you can call it that) did not do the job for me. You are free to disagree but don't try to belittle my opinion that I clearly back with reasoning.

      4. I don't know what's the deal with the voice actors outside of the games and frankly don't care. His voice to me sucks in the second dubbed version of the game, it is what it is. Not only that tho but I absolutely hate the innocent personality he projects in the second game unlike the first.

      5. Marino is a fully mature looking woman/reploid and generally is not forced on the player in much scenes. I'll admit that the artist behind OoT is kinda pervery drawing erotic manga all the time BUT Ruto is part of a species that shows no external genitalia, so its not like provoking sensations like panty shots or awkward dialog, and despite what you think about their intentions with fairy designs most of it IS BASED on common depictions of fairies. Anyway even if it dealt with such themes the good from OoT far out weighs the bad for me. Also say what you will about that artist but at least to my knowledge he has never drawn underage erotica. To me the sexual content in the second Legends is not even that big of a deal, it's just icing on a very bad cake that I already hated.

How is calling Volnutt an eyesore mean I have issues? I never liked Volnutt's design especially his lankier 2nd incarnation. I don't like his appendages they look awkward and outdated, he looks like a first generation robot not 5+. I don't like the way his joints look like an action figure in articulation. I generally like my MM characters to have a complete body of corresponding parts, while I do like his hair style and all it really doesn't match the rest of him in the same way his helmet does. BUT he never wears his helmet so I don't like that, even changing his hair to black or dark brown would have suited him better to me personally. Anyway I don't like his design sue me or deal with my opinion.

      Delete
    2. The lack of color changing when using weapons is probably more a gameplay concern, especially for team matches where character colors do matter. Would've been cool to see him flashing the various weapon colors on use, but I can see why they didn't go with it.

      Delete
    3. They are probably going to use the different colors for the player costumes.

      Delete
    4. Two things to take into account:

      1. You can't have a character changing their colors for certain attacks in a fighting game where different colors signify a different player character. In a 4-player match where everyone is Mega Man, that would get INCREDIBLY confusing!

      2. While Beck and the series he's from (Mighty No. 9) are inspired by Mega Man, he is not a Mega Man character. People really need to start realizing that Mighty No. 9 is its own thing.

      Delete
    5. He didn't change colors in either Marvel vs. Capcom game, either, so consider it an accidental reference.
