So Yeah, Mega Man is 26-Years Old Today

So here we are: day one of Mega Man's 26th anniversary. The 25th anniversary festivities are now at an end, according to Rockman Unity. The bash is going out not with a bang but a whimper, it seems. There's a small 25th ann. Rockman Xover promo event wrapping up and a new Rockman X-themed special world honoring the series' 20th anniversary (which just so happens to be tomorrow, December 18th). It's available now.

Anything else? Well there's a nice piece of Roll Caskett anniversary art from the Sound Rangers team. All PSP Rockman titles have been discounted to 800 Yen on the JPN PlayStation Network. Additionally, the Rockman X Sound Box is hours away from release. That's going to be pretty sweet, right?

Oh, there is one last thing. The very last picture in Rockman Unity's post shows Ucchy holding a piece of paper which promises something for "good children" on Christmas Day. Personally, I would not expect much. At the rate things have been going, it's most likely something Xover-related. Maybe Christmas battle memory cards (like this) or some promo event thing. I could be wrong... but honestly, I'm not feeling terribly optimistic.

Well, here's to another year. At least we can look forward to Smash Bros., among other things.

  1. Ucchy is really a nice guy...we need this kind of guy who love the megaman serie...with capcom....maybe we will have an announce in 2014... x_x
Thanks to him but yeah, happy birthay (16th) Megaman! All the best for you :)

  2. Best case scenario it might be another D-Arts. Worst case, something Xover.

    1. If it's D-Arts, I don't want another version of X or Zero. Give us Vile Mk. II, or Storm Eagle. Or any other Maverick.

    2. Yeah, or at least the 4 Repliforce crew. You could stop-motion a lot of funny scenes with those 4 along with X and Zero. Reaper Sigma would be cool too...

  3. Capcom hasn't been giving MegaMan/RockMan a proper birthday ever since it's been going downhill. The loss of Mega man Legends 3, Mega Man Universe, RockMan Online hurt pretty much everyone, including the respective development companies. Not surprised there's nothing big this year from USA's team.

R.I.P. MegaMan franchise, Hello Mighty No.9 franchise.

  4. I sure can't wait for another Xover expansion.

  5. This is horrible. To see this kind of sombre post from the main place I get my Blue Bomber info...

It's such a shame... I really think the 26th anniversary of the franchise is officially the date it died.

Capcom had the opportunity to use the 25th anniversary for something, but... it's now squandered.

I really do hate to say it, but... You fought for ever-lasting peace, Rock. Rest forever now, gentle robot... in that peace.

  6. To all the deluded optimists ("Just wait guys! They'll do something substantial for the 25th Anniversary! You gotta think positive!") who called us cynics and non-believers for thinking CAPCAOAMC had little to nothing spectacular up their sleeves, I just have one thing to say: Those "Top Men" sure showed me, right? Eh?

(The Smash 4 inclusion is more NINTENDO's game featuring Megaman, and not a CAPCOM game proper. Not to mention it won't even be out (that is to say, widely AVAILABLE AND PLAYABLE) until 2014, which is well removed from Megaman's 25th in 2012-2013 anyways.)

  7. The only thing Xover got was a world with only Dynamo as a boss. Even Xover got screwed.

  11. I celebrated Megaman's 25th anniversary by buying a statue...

It's kinda like his 10th anniversary, but with no new games.

Maybe Nintendo will finish releasing the Gameboy games on virtual console by the time his 30th anniversary roles around... maybe.

  12. Boy, that sure was a great 25th anniversary. I suppose nothing got cancelled so that's a step up from the year before. /sigh

    1. I don't mean to rain on your parade. But there were the Ultrabooks that got cancelled.

Not that those would have been released outside of their production area anyways.

    2. I think it's appropriate to leave this here: http://www.rockman-corner.com/2013/02/capcom-offers-some-25th-anniversary.html
"When Dec 31, 2013 elapses, feel free to evaluate the anniversary efforts."
      They're running out of days...

  13. Maybe we'll get a new game once we reach the 30th anniversary.

  14. I really think we all need to stop with the negativity. It does none of us any good, and doesn't do Capcom any good. It really only ultimately serves to just make things miserable for everyone. This isn't a matter of being a "stupid optimist" or what have you.

I think this year has been really good for Mega Man, actually. Xover has done very well over there (even if it's not the kind of game most of us here would enjoy), and they even greenlighted a fangame to be a semi-official release... for free! It may not have been the greatest game ever, but the gesture on Capcom's end was truly cool. To say nothing of the nods the character is getting in other games... and heck, he's going to be in the next Smash! That's awesome.

To say nothing about the wealth of fangames that got released, from Mega Man Unlimited, to Mega Man Revolution, to Mega Man Rock Force... heck, stuff like Super Mega Man 3 isn't bad either, and there's even more coming down the pipeline from various people (Mega Man Eternal is one, there's at least two others whose names that escape me that are also both shaping up to be very nice, one of which has a public demo somewhere on Yoyogames).

Mega Man's doing fine in other media too. I've heard praise for the writing (if not the inner art) of the Archie comics, and the board game is generating a pretty decent amount of hype.

Capcom's also doing their best to make a lot of the very old games commercially available for those nostalgic or even those who weren't around for them, hold-ups on Nintendo's end aside.

Any amazing new games in the future? Right now, no, but I don't hold the cancellations that happened against them given a number of the circumstances that surrounded them. Rather than curse Capcom's name and yell about using Mighty No. 9 as some sort of misguided revenge proxy, instead I simply choose to be content with my early gaming memories of one of my famous franchises, and as I type am planning to play through a classic title or two tonight to celebrate the 26th anniversary.

Let's not stress the future in terms of commercial games. Let's instead celebrate the series' long legacy and enjoy the fact we have a hell of a lot of great fun games to play over and over, because those aren't going anywhere.

I'm content, and I hope others will grow to be content too. Let's all go blast Dr. Wily and/or Sigma or what have you a new one in our favorite games, and move on from spitting poison and crying foul.

    2. Jesus, can you be any more of a blatant Capcom shill?

    3. I think it was a great post. I'm a huge Mega Man fan like everyone else here and I'm frustrated like everyone else but honestly getting pissy and crying about how bad Capcom sucks every 5 seconds won't do you any good. Carrying around all this hatred and bitterness does you no good either.

Capcom has dropped the ball a ton in recent years and has made some really idiotic decisions that have blown up in their faces.

But I can't worry about some company I have zero control over. It's a waste of time. Bur what I can do is play all the awesome Mega Man games I own,as well as read the comic series, which is actually pretty good.

So for those who just want to keep on hatin'....you are entitled to do so....but you are wasting your time....and driving up your blood pressure. :p

If you really want to give Capcom
the finger, just drop all the hate and flat out ignore them.

      Anyway,happy 26th Mega Man!
You will always be my favorite gaming franchise! As long as there are fans who love him he
      will never die. Rock on!

  15. Anonymous number 4,

You do not know what you are talking about. Capcom can just get lost. Anyway, Megaman must live!

  16. Nope. No. Nein. Niet. Nix. Nil. Nai. It's too late, Ucchy. Capcom had their chance, but the 25th Anniversary is over. But let's recap. What did Rock get for his 25th anniversary? And I don't mean "the entire multiverse of games". I mean specifically the Classic series:

    - A commercially-backed, free, mediocre, cross-promotional fan game.
    - A cameo in Rockman Xover as a badly-done sprite edit skin no one will ever use.
    - Re-releases of old NES and Game Boy titles on various game systems. (But not the 16 or 32-bit titles.)
    - Random miscellaneous merchandise a very limited number of people (read: no one) wanted or asked for.

Mind you, these are all things to come directly out of Capcom. I could also include the big "screw you" from series creator Keiji Inafune with Mighty No. 9 and the continued Archie comics series, not to mention the cameo fighter role in Smash Bros. 4, but Capcom really didn't have anything to do with those other than giving the go-ahead.

So... yeah. Happy 25th, Blue Bomber. Happy 25th...

  18. Well it's another year & although the 25th Anniversary wasn't anything amazing there's still time for things to happen with the franchise, it's still not been longer than the gap between MM8/MM&B & MM9 back in the day, it's only been 3 years since MM10. I think the cancellations have brought a lot of attention to the franchise, for better or worse & I'm sure there will be another game sometime, there just HAS to be! Hopefully things like the Smash Bros appearance as well as the Virtual Console/PSN etc re-releases will bring more new fans in & show Capcom that if they (or a 3rd party) make something for the series people will buy it!

After seeing a couple of screenshots of Megaman fighting Yellow Devil in Smash I'd love to see Nintendo tackle a Megaman game in that style... Bit of a conspiracy theory for you & I'll probably be wrong but Nintendo seem to have been promoting the Megaman games on e-shop quite a lot recently between having him on the virtual console main page pic this last week (at least here in Europe) on the WiiU as well as offering discounts on the games & of course his appearance in Smash makes me wonder if something else is going on between Capcom & Ninty .... & considering the start of the 26th year starts today & Nintendo have a "Nintendo Direct" set for tomorrow just seems like odd timing to me..... again I'm probably clutching at straws in saying this but hey a guy can dream ey? I mean who wouldn't want a Ninty Megaman game or at the very least Megaman & Rush turning up in their Battle & Chase gear as a guest character in Mario Kart 8 would be cool!

  19. It's a good thing that my NES cartridges still works along with the rest of the X series, that's the only thing that will not let me down and will give me awesome fun hours...when my busy life let me find them of course ¬¬

  20. Protodude, isn't X's birthday the same as Rock's, which is the 17th (today?) The only sources I got are GameFAQs and Wikipedia though so eh I'm not even 100% sure myself.

Any way, I know it was a bad year overall, but to celebrate, I'm gonna try playing through Mega Man X again without any armor, heart, or sub tanks and beat the game. Last time I tried, I couldn't beat Sigma's final form. There's a YT video showing this done but it looks like a TAS. I'll also play Mega Man X4 for the great dubbing, and might even make a video I've been meaning to make for awhile.

As for the classic series, I think I'll finally sit down and play through the Rockman Complete Works series again and play the PocketStation games too. Whatever happened to Henger/DeGamer's translations? I was really looking forward to them... :(

  21. Christ, I completely forgot it was Megaman's 26th anniversary. Guess I can partially blame Capcom for barely doing anything meaningful with the series lately; I know that not all of Megaman's anniversaries have been grand spectacles, but at least then it didn't feel like they needed other companies to do their job for them. (The rest of the blame goes to my shoddy memory.)

(Before anyone shoots a condescending "stop being mad at Capcom!", keep in mind that I'm not sure if I'm really "mad" at this point, just exasperated.)

  23. I guess I have to give MM the Berserk treatment. That is, after I read everything, I forget about it for a year or more, then come back.

Though it kinda irks me the fact they still center around the original series. Yes, they're starting to pay attention to the X series. But they got a lot of stuff to work with; they should use it.
