Mighty No. 9: Final Call Design Vote

As promised, Comcept is giving users the chance to vote on their favorite design for Beck's partner character in Mighty No. 9, Call. We're down to three contenders: designs E, F and H. The Call with the most votes will go on to appear in the game.

Voting is limited to Kickstarter backers only. Check your e-mail for a link to a SurveyMonkey poll. The URL is unique for each backer, exclusive to each backer. You have until the end of Saturday, December 28th at midnight PST to get your vote in (one vote per backer). The winner will be announced on the 29th.

For non-backers, you can see the three finalists in full color after the jump. Happy voting!

  1. I love Call F for so many reasons. But now, those reasons include that extremely expressive "bow"! Flap-flap-flap-flap-flap~ X3

    1. I don't understand. What's the matter with Call F? Is it because she's made by Inti Creates? Or has a passing resemblance to Roll or Ceil? I mean, I really dig Call H myself. But as a friend of mine said very recently, "We need a fighter, not a navigator!"

So... yeah. I don't understand why so many people dislike Call F, but I'm willing to learn.

    2. None of them looks like a Fighter IMO, not even F.

Maybe some of the discarded designs did, but the final 3 are not battle-ready at all.

    3. Roll is not even a fighter and yet she is playable in the mobile port of Megaman 1,Layer,Pallete and Aila was playable in Megaman x 8 despite being a Navigator..So to me look mean nothing...

The main reason I don;t want F is I want a new look for support character instead of Roll esque character.
Honestly Megaman and then Megaman Legend... I want new look and I want to see comcept show more creativicty as long a certain feminist who don;t play any Megaman game but yet claim to play Megaman X interfere with the devolepment..
Honestly I am tired of F and I really wish she will not win.

    4. That's a very well-thought debate, CATGUN. You've given a lot of good reasons not to vote for Call F. I totally respect that. I mean, ignoring the part about their PR gal. :P

    5. The problem with F is that she's too much like Roll. If I wanted Call F, I'd play Megaman, not Mighty No. 9. I want the design to be different. E's got my personal vote.

    6. I think F looks tacky. I'm not a fan of the apparent peppermint theme. I also think the face is unappealing compared to E. It looks like her eyes are half-closed and apathetic.

I wish H was just a little more interesting. As-is, it's a bit bland. It doesnt even give us a range of expressions like E and F, just on and off.

I like the spirit of E, but I'm not too into the details. The "boob cut" on the jacket makes my eyes roll. I love the colors and the expressions, though.

In general though, is it weird that these are each in a different style? If we're voting on which design we like, shouldn't we see them all consistent with the game's style?

  3. None of them are killer, but I feel like E is the most unique. F is forgettable and H looks way too much like Roll.

Or maybe Penny from Inspector Gadget.

    1. Indeed, E looks more mature, not a children, F is too much like Roll for me, but the design of F is pretty nice.
      H is penny? O:

  4. I don't like E, she looks like a character from some random cartoon network series, F is too much like Roll, H looks simple and different, I go with H.

  5. if i was a backer, i'd pick Call F. sorry but Call E looks like a tsundere (and i hate tsundere like tron bonne) and Call H makes me uncomfortable.

  6. E looks like some annoying, forgettable, kart racing game inspired manga's announcer. An intestine, but throwaway design. A bit over-involved of a design for this sort of character.

F practically requires you to be some degree of otaku to enjoy. Bound to be annoying as hell (or cute to okaku), with tons of facial expressions instead of communication. Lots going on in the design, and I think you'd have to really be into that kind of thing to not want it to just shut up and go away once it pops on screen.

H looks wonderful. It's unique, it's simple, it's pretty approachable, and not overly sexualized. It's a great design for a girl robot who is a helper by nature. It's also a wonderful tribute to Osamu Tezuka! He created Astro Boy for those who don't know. He's largely responsible for the Japanese comics (manga) industry flourishing after WW2. Astro Boy was a heavy influence on Mega Man's design and concept, and I think we all know what was a big influence on #9's design and concept. :p

They are all good in their own ways, but personally, I really hope that H wins the day. In case I had to make that clear!

  7. Not surprised that F would get in as one of the finalists. I'll be even less surprised if she happens to win.

    1. Same honestly. I'd kind of like them to break with the Rock/Roll comparisons and do something different. I think F and H are unique and bring out different comparisons and that E (for lack of a better term) just doesn't seem to break away from the typical mold of what past games have used. F actually looks different and I love the different expressions she can give off. H has a look that I haven't seen recently at all and that's pretty neat as well.

I don't hate F of course but I just think it's pulling too close to the original source material. Here's hoping the community takes a good hard look at what they'd like to see Call become.

  8. I am going with F as tradition. I dont care about some people said about an F. I want an F just like ROLL and Rock. :)

  9. I really like F's design, more so since it shows the progression and change Call will have in series. You can see on the bottom left her expression prior to gaining emotions it seems. Then once the bow/ribbon/ear thing is added suddenly as seen on the right, she is able to express herself and convey emotions. It seems that in this design they had taken into consideration her starting as 'less human' before making her more human like. I really have to applaud the effort and thought put into that.

  10. I like F because it has the same art style as Beck, plus I love the design of it. It may not be original but I still like it, and I'm loving those stripes. E is looks too much like you navigator type character and I can't really imagine her alongside Beck. H looks cute with the Astro boy look, however it's too basic. Overall they are all great designs but I prefer F the best.

  11. I like H's overall look personally, but I don't think she'd draw a crowd. Love that form, though.

F just fits so well, looks like she could get tough(ish) when needed, and the bow-thing will draw in the anime crowd. I refuse to vote for reasons, though.

  12. I rather like H because she has such a simple design compared to Beck, which I think would make for a wonderful contrast with their written personalities as presented (him being more human, her being more robotic). She also looks, at least to me, a bit more ready to get rough and tumble and adventurous. The likeness to Inspector Gadget's Penny probably contributes to that.

That said I don't dislike E or F. E does have a certain stiffness to her that would be befitting of her proposed personality, F is pretty nostalgic to the source inspiration of the project which I understand is a hugely motivating factor for a goodly number of supporters. While H is the one I want to win (and is one I voted for in the first round), I think they all ultimately have merit in their own way.

  13. Def F.

The others don't have the same Mighty No. 9 art feel that she does. E is a close second. The asymmetry threw me off at first, but it's grown on me.

  14. Please God, anything but F... ANYTHING BUT F!

  15. I like F but I voted for H because I thought F looked to much like Roll. But now that I really look at it, H looks a lot like Roll, more than F now that I see it in color.

  16. From the very beginning I figured that "F" would win since she was the one seen in concept art most frequently.

Now, though, I honestly hope she wins. Design F carries a few thematic similarities with Beck, which will help establish this franchise as its own thing and not being JUST the Mega Man reskin that its presented as. Design H, minus her lack of feet, REALLY REALLY looks like Roll trying on a new outfit. Design E is passable, but she has a bit too much of a "corporate office" vibe to her, which makes her appear distant and generally harder to accept as a "hands on" character. (Call did get her own level in the stretch-goals, right? I'm looking forward to that.)

  17. I really wish H wins, she's adorable

  18. I hope E wins. F is pretty much a carbon copy of Roll, and H looks like a mix of Roll and Yai.

  19. IMO...

E: Trying too hard to be 'cool', a lot like what Riela said earlier. The kind of vibe I get from this design is that every line I imagine her saying is going to turn out 2x more annoying than she should be.
F: Too much like Roll. Green eyes are kinda freaky, and seem like they clash with the rest of the design. Would be a good design otherwise.
H: Very simple design, which I consider a good thing. She could use some socks or pants though, the design would be perfect then. But what's with the butt plug thing?

  20. A lot of people like the H design, but to me she looks way too much like a Pokemon protagonist.

I liked E more before, but after seeing them colored I have to say F looks great. I don't think she looks too much like Roll. The fact that E and H don't have feet contributes to my new preference.

  21. Lol at Call F's pose with its similarity to Arle's portrait from Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary. I don't like the eyes too much.
