Mega Man 1 Soundtrack Gets the VRC6 Treatment

RushJet1, composer of the fantastic "cover playthrough" for Mega Man 3, has returned. This time he's rearranged Mega Man 1's soundtrack with added stereo and VRC6 effects. Developed by Konami, the VRC6 chip added three additional sound channels to the typical NES's four. Apply it to Mega Man's soundtrack and, well, you've got magic.

The above video is a complete gameplay run of Mega Man using the new soundtrack. You can listen to or purchase it from Bandcamp as well. If you're a fan of Mega Man music (or chiptune in general), you can't go wrong here.

Thanks to Tony for the tip!

  1. Wait, why is it starting with the GB title song? (Not that I'm complaining. It's one of my favorite Megaman songs.)

    1. Spice, I guess? He mixed in a lot Wily's Revenge stuff, like in Cut Man's stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=6vgZc3csa_E#t=59

    2. The very first NES/Famicom game never had any music on the title screen, so he's trying to compensate I guess. It's kinda cool in my opinion.

  2. Oh man, after hearing all the songs with the Wily's Revenge soundtrack mixed in, I waited and waited for Enker's theme.

    I was not dissapoint!

  3. RushJet's MM3 soundtrack was really awesome. I bought it and heard it for days on end. I definitely wish he'd picked a different game for his next work, though. MM1 has the shortest overall themes, and they get pretty repetitive. Hopefully he'll continue to do these. I'd love to hear MM5 or 4.

  4. I'd pay money for a modified physical cart of this game using these songs.

  5. I never did like how Konami games sounded. I'm glad everyone else seems to be enjoying these remade tracks, but I don't really think they hold a candle to the originals.

    1. You never enjoyed music in games like TMNT III (NES), Contra, or Jackal?! D:

  6. For eff sake... Why are people so fixated on the VRC6 sound chip? I'm getting sick of people doing "8-bit/NES" remixes of songs that end up using extra sound channels not normally part of most games. What's wrong with using the standard 2 squares, 1 triangle, and 1 drum channel? And a PCM channel, depending on the game.

More to the topic however, RushJet1's remixed Mega Man 3 soundtrack made me kind of depressed. He took a number of great songs and turned them int complete garbage. (The best example would be Wily Stage 3, wherein he basically just jacked up the tempo 250%.) This one, on the other hand, actually kind of annoys me. Once again, he used a number of vibratos the likes of which I haven't heard since the likes of Tim Follin (Solstice, Puzznic, Silver Surfer) and threw in a whole lot of unnecessary sound channels and DPCM samples. It's overkill. I understand that this is a remix project and that as such, it's going to sound at least slightly different from the source material, but if you're going to do something in "8-bit NES style", why not just use the standard sound chip? Why do you absolutely have to use the extra hardware that was used in only a handful of games? And in this case, why remix a Capcom soundtrack with Konami hardware?
Ignore that, these remixes are a mixed bag. Some are okay, but some such as the Iceman remix are just garbage. But that's to be expected of RushJet1, I suppose. The man has some kind of obsession with vibratos and turning calm music into something from F-Zero.

    1. Dang, so much hate, but I respect your opinion. I agree with some of what you said. I like some of the tracks but Ice Man's theme is unnecessarily fast and the extra sound channels and such for like Guts Man kinda suck.

    2. I'm not gonna lie -- part of the negativity stems from jealousy. I'm jealous that a guy like this can have so much talent and dedication, but then think some of this stuff sounds good. It's partly unfounded though, since the biggest difference between someone like him and someone like myself is the fact that I am extremely lazy and unfocused. If I could stop being lazy and unfocused, I too could crank out 8-bit remixes like a machine and maybe make small amounts of money now and then, like him or Jasper Valentine. (Who happens to be another person whose discography is mostly 8-bit remixes of already 8-bit music.) It's just not as fun as it used to be to create or re-create music anymore...

    3. Yeah ugh. I wish I could have talent like this. I've always wanted to play musical instruments really well (mainly the drums and guitar) but all I can do is sort of play piano/keyboard by ear, and not very well lol.

  7. It'd be nice if those music arrangements were actual game hacks so we could play the game with this music used natively (for emulator, at least).
