Inafune Says He's Open to Capcom Publishing Mighty No. 9

The new November issue of Game Informer magazine (#247) features an interview with none other than Keiji Inafune, as he addresses a few topics regarding Mighty No. 9. When ask about what he would do if Capcom proposed to publish the title, Inafune said "I would hear their terms. If they had the best terms, I would go with Capcom."

He adds, "There is no reason not to publish with Capcom, and I certainly don’t feel like there’s a reason that I have to publish with Capcom. Literally it would be a very cut-and-dried business negotiation. If they had the best terms, the logical businessman in me would say, “Yes, let’s go with them."

Game Informer then brought up another point of interest: would Inafune willingly reskin Mighty No. 9 as a Mega Man game as a result of that?

"If Capcom came up with really great terms to make it a Mega Man game, then of course I would listen and that would be an option. But the base of this game is that we wanted to create something original. If they gave us an offer we couldn’t refuse, that would mean having to change the main character into Mega Man. On top of that, it would still have to be our IP, which is what we want. I can’t foresee that happening. We really want this to be our thing."

Mind you, this is all hypothetical. However, Inafune is not simply a creator -- he's a business man. Should Capcom actually approach him with a deal -- the "best deal" -- I don't believe he would show much hesitation. Nevertheless, this is an interesting topic to think about. I mean, how would you feel if Mighty No. 9 found itself in Capcom's hands? Would you accept the title as a reconstituted Mega Man game?

  1. Well, thank God that won't happen!

  2. I'd rather if they'd keep No. 9 clear the hell away from Capcom.

  3. I wouldn't call Inafune a businessman. He left Capcom to get away from that sort of work, after all.

    1. He left to create his own company to make his own money. Buisness man.

  4. That whole "Mighty No, 9 ISN'T going to "replace" Megaman" thing

somehow that just felt less credible.

  5. If Mighty No. 9 were to be in Capcom's hands, then it probably wouldn't see the light of day. That much, I'm almost certain of.

  7. He's right though. If they do offer the best terms, there's no reason not to go with Capcom as long as they also agree to his terms. I doubt he'd do something foolish like hand them the IP rights.

  8. I really don't think we have to worry about this happening, but even if it did, I don't think it'd mean much, anyway. Much like how Capcom published the first Shantae game (or how Nintendo published Mega Man 6 in North America), I doubt it'd really change the core game (and of course, Comcept would still retain the rights to the IP).

But I really don't see this happening, so it's probably all a moot point.

  9. I would want the peace between Inafune group and Capcom.....i hope capcom will give to Inafune the possible thing to make megaman games with capcom rights, without buy it. (like Ducktales with Wayforward group) :)

It's really a good guy! God luck Inafune!

  10. Really, as it is, I think the only people who want a fight is the fans. If Inafune honestly believes Capcom will provide the best publishing deal, I don't fault his judgment if such a thing happens.

When I donated to the game, I didn't donate to it to 'stick it to Capcom' as quite a few fans have vocally claimed. I entrusted him with some of my money with the near guarantee that it'd go toward making a great platforming game among people who have helped make plenty excellent ones, and I don't think publishing with Capcom would undermine his ability to make good on doing just that.

  11. Why not just publish it themselves? Don't let another publisher steal all the credit.

  12. Full circle, huh.

  13. I could foresee publishing with Capcom and switching the theme to Mega Man pissing off a lot of people who supported the Kickstarter. Then again, they basically sold M#9 as a reskin of Mega Man anyway, so what difference would it make?

Seriously, if Bioshock was as much of a "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2 as M#9 is to Mega Man, it would have had your character waking up on a space station and fighting an AI named THODAN.

  14. Give it to Capcom, so they can cancel it, it would be hilarious actually to see the M Number 9 fans rage.

  15. Don't do anything stupid, Inafune. I donated money to this project and I wouldn't feel like my money was in good hands if Capcom were involved. If you do join up with Capcom, don't accept ANY compromises.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well, I don't see why not. Looking at this now, I'm 100% sure that mighty no. 9 would be a great mega man game! Due to the similarities, i'm sure that the mega man title would be a perfect fit. Plus, it would be really nice to see mega man reborn through this game in the making.

I wish you the best of luck Mr. Inafune! I just hope and prey that capcom accepts your word for it.

  17. He better not.. People paid for MN9 and not Capcom! Capcom can go to hell! Capcom dont listen to megaman fan so their lose! Inafune better thinks twice not. If he did then he is betrayal to MN9 fan for kickstarter fund!

  18. I'm... unsettled by this sudden willingness to work with Capcom. Considering how much subtle hostility Inafune presented during this whole project? Then again, I'm getting used to Inafune changing hi mind and doing a lot of double-talking and flip-flopping, so...

Business has a funny way of changing peoples' minds.

    1. It's not a sudden willingness, just a stated possibility if Capcom really offered a deal that would grant them the best freedom of all the possible publishers. Nothing has changed in Inafune's mind in that regard.

      Delete
    2. What double-talk and flip-flop would that be? The "creator of Megaman" dispute, which was only a matter of perspective that he later clarified? Other than that, that's the only thing I've seen him adjust, but I also haven't been following him 24/7, so I could have missed something.

    3. Inafune was even willing to finish Legends3 with his team at comcept, But Capcom said No. All this "Hell yeah, Inafune is flipping Capcom the bird!!" stuff only comes from some fanboys, in every interview even during the No9 KS campaign he always said he has no remorse at all with his old pals at Capcom.

  19. It's ridiculous how people say "NOOOO, Capcom will cancel it, what a wtf bad idea!"
Mighty is from Inafune team, if capcom doesnt want be the editor, they just wont; they can't cancel it anyways, inafune can find an other editor if he wants (right?)
And anyways, with the money he had now for this project, he can maybe do this thing himself?
The point to make Mighty 9 a game like MMZX or Legend, is really a good thing and a hope for the others megaman games to revive, if capcom and inafune do the peace, it can be a very good start as i said.

Capcom care about megaman but they have NO team for it (but they care a little little only i dont like that, megaman deserves more games than Street fighter and others ADDON style game Lollllll)

Inafune try his best, because he knows We like Mighty 9, he knows we like megaman style game, and HE CERTAINLY KNOW HOW WE LIke....MEGAMAN GAMES! yeah it's just a dream, i hope it can.... :'(((((

I miss so much megaman games....

I m laughing. Do you really think that Capcom care about Megaman ? No. I doubt because all Capcom cares about is MONEY and not Megaman fan!

  21. I'd be really sad if Mighty No. 9 was reskinned as Mega Man. Everyone at Comcept is really inspired to do something fresh, right now. They don't have to follow some sort of guideline to make things match up to a previous story.

If they swap this out as a Mega Man game anyway, then there goes all of that freedom, all of that inspiration. They now have to do things by the book, with little room to breathe.

As far as Capcom publishing the game, that's actually not a bad idea. In my opinion, it would bring Mighty No. 9 closer to the Mega Man family. Just as long as they don't mess with the product the way I stated earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Never gonna happen, But I'm sure slapping the Megaman brand in No.9 would be easy as hell, hell, even in concept stages this game is more of a MM game than Xover. It could do wonders rebooting the franchise.

Still, I'd like it best if Capcom made their own (good) MM game to start a competition between this and No9, that would be the best case scenario fron every point of view IMHO.

Just like publishing books, you have the files ready, they print them. That's all. Simple transaction. Of course, you can always self publish, they have the money now. However, their intentions are DIGITAL copies only, which includes the various forms. IoW, people have to burn their own disks and media to play them in said console of choice.
I thought it obvious, I am not so sure anyone has gotten it.
But Keiji himself has been preaching everywhere, I know he is not even considering the thought of even giving ANY right to Capcom:

    2. Ok, I was able to see the posts now. And not a shred of evidence was given on the thread. If shinobi602 wanted to proof Game Informer interview was real, he would have uploaded an image of said article, in a host not condemned by Berne or TRIPS. So far it feels like it's just FUD. What makes the thread even more fishy, is the fact that shinobi602 has not responded back.

However, even if the interview is true, we know for sure 敬二さん will not sell his IP. He is just looking for a publisher to make the hard copies, which everyone in the kickstarter campaign believes they are getting.

    3. Um... I'm honestly not sure why any of that is necessary. Please see my above reply. It is a copyright law; we cannot post magazine scans. Period.

Shinobi is a very, *very* reliable source. There is no question to his legitimacy. He has posted accurate transcriptions in the past. Pick up the latest Game Informer if you'd like to see the article for yourself.

I know you are not allowed to post said image, or shinobi602 at both respective hosts. I am just saying that if shinobi602 wanted to further undeniably provide the article itself, shinobi602 definitely could have hosted the image elsewhere, and linked image to the host. That's all. And yeah, there's no need to post it, even share the news. But it was done, and it spread like wildfire. It's affecting the Backers negatively. And we have yet to receive an official statement of said interview:
      https://twitter.com/MightyNo9
      https://twitter.com/comcept_jp

I just wanted to confirm to everyone not to fret. 敬二さん is just looking at possible candidates to publish the hard copies. So it's actually good news, if the interview did occur.

Thanks for the very fast response and approval. We are deeply thankful.

    5. You're quite welcome. Thing is, NeoGaf bans users who even link to magazine scans. It's something they don't take lightly. I am sure you'll see the scans elsewhere soon enough, though.

Mind, this magazine just came out. It may be some time before any official MNo.9 source makes mention of it. Also, these interviews are published on Game Informer online some weeks to months after the issue hits. It's something to look forward to.

  24. As someone who isn't actively supporting Capcom at the moment, this would certainly put me in an odd spot.

That said, it's not as surprising for Inafune to say this as some people are making it out to be. Whatever problems he may or may not have with Capcom, he was already willing to put those problems aside when he offered to finish Legends 3 after he left.

Sounds to me like he is still willing to put those problems aside, should the hypothetical situation ever come up.

  31. As usual, so many are shouting and so many are not listening. Inafune states if Capcom gives him the best offer.
Let's break this down: The heads of Capcom would have to go to him and publish game under his terms. More or less Capcom would be begging him, to allow their name on the project, which he has near total control over.
This isn't being bipolar, flip-flopy, or a sell-out. This is, in a business sense, saying "If they are willing to kiss my ass enough..."

He was asked IF (keyword is "if") Capcom had asked him to publish Mighty No. 9, would he do it. His answer was that he has no reason to be against it, but also no reason to be for it. If (again, keyword) they had the best terms out of all who would be wanting to publish the game, then he'd go with them, and if not, then no.

I honestly don't understand how people aren't getting what this article is even about.
