Better Keep An Ear Out for This 'Wreck-It Ralph' Mega Man Nod

No, it's nowhere near as significant as Dr. Wily's "planned" cameo, but it's a reference none the less.

Television Tropes' list of Wreck-It Ralph video game references notes "the sound effect that plays when Felix gets a pie is the same sound effect used when Mega Man gets an enemy ability from Mega Man 3 onwards." In case you need a reminder, the SFX sounds a bit like this.

So yeah, that's the only Mega Man reference. A little disappointing, sure, but the movie is still reportedly an entertaining flick, with or without the Blue Bomber (and Wily).

If you'd prefer to spoil all of the movie's video game references, head on over to TV Tropes for the full list! (thanks for the heads up, Tabby!)

  2. I do believe I sent this news in about two weeks or so ago. =P

  3. I watched this movie awhile ago and there is barely any Mega Man reference. Maybe the sound effect which I barely registered, but that's about it. Still, this movie is absolutely fantastic! Don't miss it!

  4. I'm excited for the movie and I think it'll probably be pretty good, but I can't put much faith in the references when they can't even get straight that Zangief's not evil :/

  5. The sound was SO quick, I honestly can't confirm it :/ Sigh. I'd have to back the movie up again.
So, if you're watching the movie, keep your ears open, it'll be in the very beginning during the 8-bit part.

  6. Thanks for the info. I saw it yesterday and was thinking there wasn't anything at all, so this is better than nothing. Maybe we'll uncover more when it comes out on video and people can go through the cameo heavy scenes frame by frame.

It is an awsome film. Easily the best video game movie ever. Not that the bar was set particularly high, but it does stand up well on its own two feet. I'd still go see it and say the same if the cameos were expys.

  7. There's a way to actually play the game on Disney's site, so just play the game and get a lot of pies. Sounds like the effect to me!

  10. Well, I posted a comment earlier, but I guess it didn't go through. I can confirm that the sound is in fact the same sound. I sent in very similar news two weeks ago or so. The online game on Wreck-It Ralph's website uses the sound effect when Fix It Felix gets a pie. It's very clear there. I heard it and was like, "Hey! I know that sound!" =P

  11. It wasn't in the movie. It was a different effect in the movie, than in the online game.

  12. At the beginning of the trailer, you can hear a NES castlevania 1 theme, what? did nobody notice that? lame.....

  13. Yeah, the movie's awesome. I wasn't going to post this (because it was rather shocking at the time and I doubted many would believe me), but my brother works for Disney Animation (as to what capacity, I can't say -- I don't want to get him in any trouble). Right after the first trailer came out, we had a chat via Gmail -- here is an excerpt containing the pertinent info:

???: So you liked the ralph trailer?
me: Yeah, it was pretty good. The megaman community is worried, though, because Dr Wily was in the concept art for the group session, but wasn't there in the trailer.
???: Ah that one - the concept was while we were still working on getting the rights, and at the time things looked favorable, then Capcom's manager for the MegaMan property changed and the new guy was like "We are doing what!? No we aren't!" and shut it down, so no megaman characters....
    me: That's a pity.
???: Yeah. I don't understand that mindset at all

I guess at this point, this isn't really big news -- but when I had this conversation... Well, things had already gone downhill (with all the game cancellations), so this was the nail in the coffin for me -- I felt like Megaman had died.

  14. @Gawl_Oulmn: Wouldn't be surprised if that was true at all. No one at Capcom gives a shit about Megaman anymore
