Mega Man 2 Being Made for Petit Computer

With the release of Petit Computer (an easy-to-use BASIC programming tool for the Nintendo DSi and 3DS), we all knew it was only a matter of time before someone would set out to recreate an NES Mega Man game. And sure enough, DiscostewSM has done just that: replicating Mega Man 2 from the ground up.

What you see above is an early build. The final version will feature music, enemies and the ability to shoot. Once all that's added, anyone with a copy of Petit Computer will be able to download the game via QR code.

Look forward to it!

  1. This is a really awesome project, so far! He has a lot of work ahead of him, so I hope everything works out well. Can't wait to try this. I do have one question, though:

Why do people skip over the first Mega Man game like it doesn't exist? Even the 3D Classics at E3 skipped it for Mega Man 2. I know 2 is a great game, but still, the first wasn't bad, either.

  2. And it is ALWAYS Megaman 2.

  3. I love this so far. Definitely getting it.

But what about Mega Man 1? That one is my favorite out of the whole series.

  4. I'm not the biggest fan of Mega Man 2 (I like it but don't think it's the best in the series like everyone else seems to), but this is really impressive. If this ever gets finished, I'll definitely download Petit Computer just to play it.

  5. Yep. This just goes to prove the point I've made before, about no other game in the series getting half (or even a quarter, for that matter) as much attention as Mega Man 2 does. That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

  6. So just because mega man 2 is the first mega man so many people played makes it the best? I don't think so. The game is good but mega man 3 is far better in controls. Of course everyone has their opinion but it would be nice to see other titles get some shine. This video is very cool though either way

  7. August 6, 2012 11:26 PM Anonymous just proved my point that overrated games are fueled by blind nostalgia.

I used to go on about that in regards to Zelda:OoT before. I was argued that nostalgia doesn't do that, but I'm still pretty damn certain that nostalgia plays a big factor in the popularity of games.

And as I've already said on TMMN, I see no point in doing an unofficial port. Official ports of a game that's been ported forever is one thing, but a fan port is another.

  8. Mega Man 2 gets so much attention because it was basically the blueprint for all future games, more so than Mega Man 1. Seriously, look at all the other Classic and X games, almost all of them follow the exact same formula. MM1 is kinda the odd one out in the series with its 6 Robot Masters, points system, Magnet Beam and boss rush stretched out over the Wily stages. I like MM1 as much as the next guy but Mega Man 2, imo, is the true classic Mega Man.

That said, I agree with MM2 stealing the spotlight from the other games. Where's the love for MM3?

  9. MegaMan 2 is probably one of the easiest to manipulate an port and such. It had the basic jump and shoot formula with no extra stage hazards or abilities. Even so, that's not to say DiscostewSM wont eventually get to MM1, MM3 and onward. 2 is probably good for development because of said reasons and because it's pretty well known, inside and out, and easy to tweak and fix bugs.

    Still overrated though. =P

  10. can you fit all 12 stages in 9999 lines of code?
