Rumor: Capcom Removing Mega Man Fans, Cosplayers From SDCC Booth (UPDATED)

My inbox is literally being swamped with this one. I've no direct confirmation if this is true or not, but I feel this is worth a mention. According to users on 4chan's /v/ video games board, fans discussing Mega Man or cosplaying as Mega Man characters are being removed from Capcom's San Diego Comic-Con booth:

I really, really hope this one isn't true. Yes, Capcom has every right to take the measures needed to protect themselves, but this  seems a little extreme. Confiscating badges? Really? I can see this being the case if one were to exhibit unruly behavior, but..

For now, we're marking this as a rumor. If you have substantial proof that this is happening, please contact me. Video footage would be ideal, mind you.

If you are attending Comic-Con, I ask you to please represent our community respectfully. I understand you are angry, but if you intend to support Mega Man Legends 3 in any way, do so appropriately and with class. Violence and outright inappropriate behavior directed towards Capcom staff will get us nowhere.

Be safe. Be smart.

UPDATED: According to a Tweet from Capcom Unity, it's false: "We welcome all cosplayers to our booth at Comic-Con. Anything else you've heard is outright false."

And no, Seth Killian wasn't assaulted.

No fear, guys. Proceed to visit Capcom's booth!

  1. Let's go there and make a Mega Man Legends chorus! (sarcasm)

If that's true, that's STUPID! Specially with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in production, which has Tron and Zero as a playable characters, not forgeting the other Legends cameos. Will they forbid UMvC3 too?

  2. It's not just according to 4chan's /v/, it's also according to the live-chat (which is swamped with Legends-related outrage, I might add) and Twitter.

Thank you Capcom, for giving me reasons not to feel bad about boycotting you.

  3. Man, Capcom's in it deep now.

  4. lolCapcom.

I swear, Capcom's trying to overthrow Hazama from BlazBlue and become King of Trolls.

  5. Dare I say that this is all fascinating?

I usually don't like "perturbances", but this cancellation and the following crapstorm have been an interesting shakeup.

Hope it ends in MML3 development being reinstated, or the franchise being sold off to someone who cares! (As if.)

  6. People keep saying there's outrage in the live chat, but I only see mentions of Megaman occasionally. (Occasionally enough, but I expected more.)

Did they all get booted or something?

Why is Capcom avoiding this? :(

  7. Reading all of this makes me feel that megaman won't even be in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3

  8. Protodude, you're on Joystiq. You're like, an internet celebrity now.

Definitely the de facto source of Rockman news these days.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Heh they started remove coments about megaman legends on their posts on capcom unity too with the explanation that the blog post and the mml posts are unrelated. tey are trying to shut us up big time!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm sorry, but we've got to keep the pressure on 'em. Fanboys may be doing some harsh stuff, but Protodude... they're STILL "fans". And whither it's disobedience or not, fans have a right to express their outrage. We can't back down from this. We have to show a public display of adoration for MegaMan Legends 3, to get it back on track!

  11. @ Anonymous:
Up until a while ago, you couldn't enter the chat without seeing a Legends-related insult (on at least a 1:5 Legends:Regular post ratio). Then people got kicked (or just stopped replying after a certain moment)and "Capcommunity" (the mod, I believe) said that all comments Megaman-related will get a shrug at most. So I think it somewhat calmed down, maybe forcefully, maybe not. But since it was kept up for so long, I personally doubt the commenters would all just stop after one comment.

  12. New plan:

    1. Get as many people as possible to wear any kind of Mega Man T-shirt under other clothes, so that it is hidden from first view.

    2. Fill out Capcom's panels or booths.

    3. Everyone take off their shirts at the same time, so that all the Capcom employees take notice.

    4. Stay there, silently staring at them. Do nothing. Just stare.

    See what happens.

  13. If they won't allow people that love the blue bomber near their happy little booth, maybe they will allow people with blue bombs. They'll make a bigger commotion and impact, that's for sure.

  14. The rage hasn't stopped on facebook I've been monitoring that for TMMN all day. But, looking at it, they say that us fans don't care. You would think all this outrage and hateful comments, video's too, would get it through their heads that we did care and we did do our part.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't think Capcom will ever use the Dev room again after all this. What an unmitigated disaster.

And, of course, the fans are to blame. Naturally.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @MegaMac - terroristic threatening? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  17. They're snubbing the fanbase of one of their largest ip's? Wow. Stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  18. See this is what happens when you rage and call for boycotts, you make the company realize you simply aren't worth their time anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I seriously doubt that this is true, maybe outside of an isolated case or two. If it's a large movement, then I definitely want to hear some solid confirmation on this.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Someone take out Capcom's servers already. That is the only way they will learn. How can they silence us, we need to take action!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @MegaMac

Seriously no shit like that dude come on!

But on serious note everyone there should wear a megaman shirt and be like f u

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1 (Someone says "Spider-Man" loud at CC)
2 (Many guards appear and kick him out)
3 (The guy wonders "What the heck I did to make them angry?")
/\ Nothing. We have a Legendary-sized reason to be upset. Did they expect us to just forget it as it is? They don't even gave a proper excuse, just "we cancelled because we can" and done, nothing else. That like a slap in the face, a Galactus slap!

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Anon: Lol, customer bases are all a company has. Without us, they can't exist. They brought this on.

Perhaps you were being sarcastic though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If they would just tell us why they canceled it and if mega man will see the light of day, we wouldn't be out for blood as much. Nintendo and Capcom have sucked this summer, Nintendo has controversy with the big three games from Operation Rainfall.

  25. http://gamingirresponsibly.com/rumor-assault-at-comic-con-over-mega-man-legends

Cmon this is the kind of thing that gives us fans a bad name.

    ReplyDelete
  26. whither it's disobedience or not, fans have a right to express their outrage.

    Wrong.

Everyone's free to show you dissappointed and frustrated you are with Capcom. I'm gravely unhappy as well. But hate and threats cross the line, and the only thing you're going to accomplish is for Capcom (and other companies in the industry who are watching this issue unfold) to never try to interact with its fans in a devroom-like fashion ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not normally one to speculate, but if this is true, then I'd bet it's a sign that they know they made an unpopular decision, that they know there's going to be fan backlash, and that they're SCARED of it.

Can't say I blame them for being concerned. I do blame them for the root cause of said concern, though.

Probably the best part about never having played Legends is that I can watch all this mostly objectively, and laugh at how poorly Capcom is handling themselves. So far, in no particular order, Capcom has:

-- Effectively blamed the fanbase for the demise of a game that said fanbase has wanted for over ten years.
-- Allowed part of their PR team to sound off in a manner that was extremely unprofessional and inflammatory.
-- Placed themselves in a position where even a rumor of such conduct as has been described here could be even remotely taken seriously. (I mean, come on, who would have ever thought we'd consider the idea of Capcom kicking Mega Man cosplayers out of their booth without laughing?)
-- Oh, and did I mention pulling the proverbial rug out from under the dreams of thousands of their most diehard fans? Yeah, there's that, too.

Also, an additional note: anyone who claims that boycotts don't work underestimates the free market system. Money talks, and if enough Mega Man fans truly put their money where their mouths are, Capcom could actually see a considerable loss in revenue in their other franchises. Enough to make them reconsider the cancellation? Not for me to say. But I think the threat of revenue loss is going to be a better motivator than sucking up to a company that has shown a considerable lack of regard for the fans thus far.

  28. @Hypercoyote

SURE! Lol, I was kidding of course. But I wouldn't be opposed if someone else blew up their booth, lol. They just come back from a panel and there it is, in splinters. With red spray paint on the remains saying "Canceled" lol.

    @Anonymous

Quite the contrary. The more we rage and show them they made an extreme mistake, the more they might happen to realize: "Hey...uh, we really messed up didn't we?" and they may fix their problems.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Also @Anonymous

I'm sure Street Fighter fans and Resident Evil fans would do the same thing. I wouldn't be opposed to any of the games that are being released now being canceled, aside from maybe RE: Revelations...still not buying it though. No need to get a DS now! lol

  30. Honestly, I dunno about this. There's been all kinds of rumors going on lately. There's this rumor that this post is about, and then there's also another rumor that a Mega Man fan punched Seth Killian in the face. I think they're all just rumors. Whether or not it's true, though, Capcom did mention on their Twitter that they welcome all cosplayers to their booth and anything anyone says to the contrary is false. Whether that's the truth or just damage control, I'm not sure entirely. Right now, I don't really know what to believe, but there really are too many rumors going around right now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. But Seth Killian deserved it, right? Maybe it was wrong to punch him because it gave us a bad name?

Hmm... someone stood up to Seth Killian for the first time...

    ReplyDelete
  32. "it's also according to the live-chat (which is swamped with Legends-related outrage, I might add) and Twitter."

Chances are they're just recycling the same rumor as fact.

PS: Am I the only one imagining "Protodude, Roving Reporter, On-Scene At 4chan As Events Unfold"?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I dunno. Will wait something more concrete. But I wonder how much talk about MML3 there will be in the SDCC. And if Seth really got hit, whoever did it is either in a rage greater than the Hulk, or is just plain stupid.

By the way, Protodude, I've heard that Seth had quit Capcom to find another job. Did he return or was it false?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good, it's false, meaning that we can still cosplay (besides, almost every rumor started on 4Chan is false 90% of the time)

    ReplyDelete
  35. In regards to the updated news:

Most of what I said still stands. The fact that we would even consider such a rumor to be possible shows what shaky ground Capcom treads on right now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Someone should honestly ask him, "Why didn't you just reuse Volnutt for MvC3 as the Megaman iteration?" It would be cheaper and faster for them when you think about it...

  39. That's why I will wait for "Super Ultimate MvC3 EX Alpha Zero Plus Deluxe".

  40. So... it's fals just because CAPCOM says it's false?

It's not as though Capcom has ever lied in a public statement, is it? (*SARCASM*)

    ReplyDelete
  41. They have Phoenix FUCKING Wright in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 but no Megaman?! Oh my god... So fucking stupid... Capcom I am disappoint. Truly, truly disappoint.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If you came up to me and said, "Hey, we're making a Capcom fighting game. What characters should we include?"

The first thing I would say is "Megaman."

    Hell, if you said, "Capcom."

The first thing I would say is "Megaman."

What kind of idiots are running this company?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would never assault the Capcom USA staff... those guys ultimately had nothing to do with the decision. Helpless bystanders.

If the top brass of Capcom Japan was present however... well, lets just say I'd make no promises of pacifism. Because THEY would f-ing deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oi, these threats of violence are a little unsettling. It's dumb, yea. But even talking about reacting violently is not classy.

  47. I was cosplaying as Megaman and the Reps there loved it. They threw me into the street fighter booth, offered free posters, and had me talk to two guys doing a live feed on their site. This was on Saturday.

    Rumor Squashed.
