April Fools: Coro Coro Teases New Rockman With Boss Design Contest

Capcom and Coro Coro Comics look to be once again collaborating on the unveiling of a brand new Rockman game. For years now, Capcom has invited fans to participate in the development of new games by hosting boss design contests. And as revealed in the latest issue of Coro Coro Comics, it appears that tradition will continue...

Coro Coro is indeed playing host to an all new boss design contest. Curiously, the event isn't being targeted at a specific series or incarnation of Rockman. In other words, the contest is for a new Rockman game, but for which series (if any) remains a mystery.

The event is being promoted by an example boss design, a foe that sports a familiar animal motif reminiscent of X series antagonist "Mavericks." However, the magazine goes on to compare his abilities to that of several Battle Network Net Navis, leaving us to infer the above belongs to a forthcoming Battle Network-ish game.

Given that Coro Coro exclusively reveals Battle Network/Star Force-styled titles, it's possible that this fellow belongs to something similar, perhaps even a sequel to MMBN, SF, or an entirely new series altogether. Shot in the dark, but maybe a Rockman X-inspired Battle Network? Speculation can only last for so long, it seems. Come early June, the identify of this new game will be revealed in the next Coro Coro.

Could this be the rumored 25th anniversary project? A new series, even? After all, Star Force was hailed as the commemorative series for the franchise's 20th anniversary. A third addition to the popular "network" time line seems appropriate, at this point.

Nevertheless, this is exciting news. Looking forward to future updates!

**APRIL FOOLS UPDATE**: Wow, that went way better than expected. I'm afraid this contest isn't real in the slightest. April fools, indeed.

As some of you pointed out, this image is actually from the EXE3 boss contest from Spring 2002. It's an image that isn't all too known outside of Japan, so I kind of used that to my advantage.Worked out quite nicely, I think.

In truth, this was a last minute thing that I whipped up late last night. I was originally planning to do something Mega Man Universe related, but that completely back fired. Ah well, there's always next year for something "bigger."

  1. Yup I sure do trust 2chan on April 1st of all days no way this is a joke.

  2. I'm guessing April Fools on this one, but it would be a welcome change with Universe being put on ice and (as far as I know) MML3 still not having a greenlight to go.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I'm putting 20 dollars on the table that its a BN7/Patch story.

I totally called it. Also, a lotta news lately, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  4. April fools....sigh

  5. YES! HEATMANEXE, EXE SERIE! YEAAAAAAAAAH, my dream come true! :3

    ReplyDelete
  6. ...looks like a swat kats villain.

    ReplyDelete
  7. IB4 CAT MAN!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. This page is years old. It's real, yes, but old. Where else would you see only EXE1~2 Navis?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well, below the drawn images, there ARE Battle Network design of bosses.. But those don't necessarily mean anything I think. Still, I'd like another battle network on 3DS :3

    ReplyDelete
  10. My guess is one of these three:

    -Mega Man X9
    -Mega Man Starforce 4
    -Mega Man: Battle Network 7

I get a strange feeling that it's X9. The character shown in the artwork definitely looks like X-series material. Or I could be wrong, you'll never know.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Actually come to think of it I swear I've seen that cat drawing before and the fact there are all the Battle Network 2 bosses at the bottom makes me think it was when they announced the one for Battle Network 3.

    ReplyDelete
  12. My mind is full of...

    Confusion.

But this looks great. It's nice to hear something positive after the cancellation of MMU. (Not like I cared much for that title anyway...) Although, I just hope that this scan is real. <_< You never know what with tomorrow...

It kinda makes me think of SF, frankly.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wasn't Starforce a X themed EXE?

I only got to Cygnus, but from what I remember, he was an animal.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh wow, that looks cool! Makes me wonder why they haven't done this already.

  16. Yay! A new 3DS title! I hope it's X inspired at least!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe they have another contest some time ago, like one year or something, and nothing happen.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I call Rockman ZX3, X9, BN7 (though very unlikely), or the Network Timeline's new series based on Rockman X/Zero.

    ReplyDelete
  19. But i hope it's not an april fool lol. I will be horrible.

EXE+classic was epic. Exe+ (classic/X) can be AWESOMEEEEEE!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. "April Fools," right?

    ReplyDelete
  21. YES! new exe type game!?!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ahahaha.... April Fool's joke amirite?

    ReplyDelete
  23. April-Fools...

    *Rolls eyes*

Some actual effort would be appreciated. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does this have any to do with 1 of April?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Megaman X Battle Network pleeeeease!!!

And instead of controlling/fighting with humanoid, at times uninteresting NetNavis, instead use copied or tamed animal-based Mavericks and REALLY match Pokemon at its own game.

Who here wouldn't honestly like to have been able to use Sting Chameleon, Magma Dragoon, or Storm Eagle (or Cross) in an MMBN setting, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  26. My body is ready.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hmm... It's hard to see if this is a new Star Force game, I could be wrong though. But then again, if it is a new Star Force game, that would make some Star Force fans happy.

I guess we have to wait till June to find out or some news tip will reveal to us that it may be a new Star Force game or BN game which is odd cause I thought the Battle Network series ended with 6.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh yeah! I can't wait! Bring on more Battle Network-ish games! Oh, here's another possibility: Command Mission 2. Wishful thinking, I know, but that example boss reminds me of Wild Jango. But if it is a BN-type game, what kind of technology will they use now? What do we have besides WIFI and the Internet?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Happy April 1st, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  30. NO! Just another game from a series of games that I really didn't care for. Sorry, but those games were just boring. I'd rather them come up with a weird way to bring back the Zero series before this.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ugh. If this wasn't April Fool's Day, I'd be jumping up and down like none other.

But as it is, I'm taking everything posted on the Internet with a pinch of salt, if you would.

(Please be true please be true please be true please be true please be true please be true please be true please be true)

    ReplyDelete
  32. WOW, I have not seen this picture in forever.

    ReplyDelete
  33. happy april fools?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think Star Force was supposed to be the Network Timeline's X. The naming scheme was similar, and it felt "X-ier".

But yea, I'm with Anon1. Totally excited. Hope it's one last EXE game.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This better not be an April Fool's joke. A new entry into the series, even if it's the network timeline, would count as a new major entry into the series, and it's been too long since one of those.

If this and Legends 3 pull through, I may change my view on Capcom slightly. I guess we'll see...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh F*** YEAH!
    This would be epic!
Gimme a BN Style rockman on my 3DS!

BlaXun (former owner of Pet-World) out

    ReplyDelete
  37. NO! No More New Mega Man series! We have enough. Plus most of the ones we Do have[original,x,legends,,zx and starforce} are unfinished.

So Crapcom, before starting a new Mega Man series...Finish the ones you already have first.

So,hopefully these bosses will be for an existing Mega Man series.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think I'm detecting a pattern here... Cut MegaMan from the MvC roster, leak rumors that Megaman .exe will be a DLC instead, cancel MegaMan Universe, cancel MegaMan Legends 3 (probably) and now all this Battle Network crap.

I figured it out! Capcom doesn't hate the MegaMan franchise like I thought, they're just doing everything in their power to suppress the action-platformer titles and turn MegaMan into a full-fledged Pokemon clone....

...dear God, I'd rather the series die with dignity than linger on in Battle Network/Starforce limbo.

I remember back in June 2008, when Starforce 2 came out. I found myself for the first time, staring down a MegaMan game that I didn't want to buy (after 20 years of dedication) and I was ready to give up on the MegaMan franchise like I did Sonic. But a few weeks later, the unthinkable happened... they announced MegaMan 9!

MegaMan came back in a glorious way that I never thought possible! 9 & 10 were once-in-a-lifetime novelties, like new Roger Rabbit merchandise or the 4th season of ReBoot. But now MegaMan has slipped back into the rank abyss.

Capcom, like SEGA, has decided that since quality titles for older gamers are too hard to make and satisfy the majority, they'll market half-assed games exclusively to children who are too stupid to discern good games from crappy ones.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Picture at the bottom say's that the top 20 most fav. character in EXE nah, I don't speak the language LOL, well hope this is true because of the april fools day. I think this is a possible.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Heh, had me fooled for a while, but I swear I've seen this page before as well.

@ Stefan: You'd better be forwarding your complaints towards IntiCreates, then. It's not really the Network Team's fault that IntiCreates can't finish what they started (ZX) and that Capcom's making them pick up the slack in the rest of the Robotics Timeline in largely debatable areas (the Classic series, MMU particularly).

The Network Team at least is consistent in finishing what they started. Their only loose end at the moment is the Legends series, one that they're already tying up with Legends 3 as we speak.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Because of the new soundtrack that is coming out, I feel like it could be Zero or X series they could put character in the game because of the design.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Really bad timing is really bad. My skepticism meter stays full. Q_Q

    ReplyDelete
  43. Maybe a minute.. It is April 1st. I dont buy it until I know for the sure. Right now, I will back off. :)

  46. @ Professor Megaman: Hello, Professor! Being an ass to Battle Network as usual, eh? Joke's on you...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Create your own DLC characters for Mega Man Universe! XD

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hate April Fool's Day.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @ Professor Megaman: Someone's logic is flawed and very negatively opinionated. Go chill out and vent your anger for Capcom somewhere else.

But on the idea of this article: Why'd you have to post something like this to get my hopes up, only to end up posting it on April Fools Day?

Terribly bad timing, this post has.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'll get you, Protodude!

I almost believed it. You're good at this.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah, right. The kids' drawings are NEVER that clean and detailed. And Freezeman's artwork has him glowing, which the one in the scan doesn't have. If it were official, they would use the true official artwork and not anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh, my. This is is quite intriguing.
But it could also be an April Fool's Day joke...
    *fingers crossed for otherwise*

    ReplyDelete
  55. April FAIL, period!

    ReplyDelete
  56. "Rockman X-inspired Battle Network..." Well, I'd say that was Ryuusei no Rockman, personally, except for the fact that the only similarities are the teleport animation and the animalistic designs of the bosses. That and the X series, overall, was legitimately appealing.

Thank God it's April Fools Day.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Now MMU is canceled, if there is a new EXE, a lot of classic fan will be mad and terrible with the exe games and exe fans....They rage. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. Happy April Fool's everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hope this is an April Fools jokes...the design looks uninspired and nothing that any Mega Man universe should see, really. I also think Capcom making a new series is the single dumbest thing they've done as of late. Finish the fuckin' series you have going already! Or is Wily going to come back for eternity, pushing the X series past it's time in history?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ MegaMac: Quite disappointed. I thought you knew better than that.

Again, not the Network Team's fault that IntiCreates can't get their crap together/Capcom won't let IntiCreates get their crap together.

Unless you're seriously advocating wanting the Network Team to work on your precious X9...

    ReplyDelete
  61. Meh... my body is screaming "yes," but my heart is slowly shaking its head "no."

As in, I wish more than anything that this was real, but I'm 95% sure it's just an April Fools joke. :(

    Bad timing, Protodude... bad timing.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Professor Megaman -
Ugh. I agree with one thing you say on another thread, and then you have to go make an ass of yourself and out yourself as one of those useless, hateful members of the community the rest of us true fans hate. Troll.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I can't believe I fell for this. Oh, well. Still hoping for a new MegaMan series.

    ReplyDelete
  64. What is it about some people that incites such hatefulness? They're just silly video games. O_o

    ReplyDelete
  65. Protodude I am pretty sure that if this were true you'd have the good sense not to post it on April first.

At any rate, I'll remain hopefully optimistic, even if this is likely a prank. Ya never know, what better way to tease people of a new game than by making others question its validity?

Anyways, come the big reveal I'll honestly say I didn't KNOW this was a prank for sure, but did HIGHLY SUSPECTED that it was. (Comment for proof :3)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Just so folks know, this isn't the first time Protodude's done "possible new BN/SF series?" as an April Fool's joke. He did the same thing a year or two back, only using concept art from the BNOCW and saying the book said it was a tease for a new series or something along those lines.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I thought she really loved me, but in the end, it turned out that IT WAS I who was the April Fool! DX (whips out chainsaw)

But ya, this be April Fools, ya?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Happy April Fools.

    ReplyDelete
  69. As all bosses below are from EXE 2, was it used for EXE 3? (The winners being MistMan, BowlMan and KingMan)

    ReplyDelete
  70. People, this is an April Fools joke. I can't believe some of you are so guillible you actually BELIEVE this.

Also, EXE/BN is OVER. LET IT REST IN PEACE, GODDAMNIT! Zero was way better and you don't see fans bitching and whining and begging for a new game.

And even then, there's Ryuusei/StarForce. You know, the one with an actually good storyline and character development? Which you all flamed because it was nothing like BN and when they made it more similar you all called it a ripoff?

Seriously, shut up about Battle Network. It's pissing me off. Put more energy in making sure Legends 3 is greenlit, or ask for X9 or a third ZX.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @ April 1, 2011 7:15 PM Anon:

"Zero was way better and you don't see fans bitching and whining and begging for a new game."

While I do agree with much of your message as an EXE fan, you should try talking to a certain group of Zero fanboys at Unity who refuse to acknowledge the possibility that Zero may have actually died for real this time.

Go browse around the Zero section at Unity. Then browse around the ZX section. Look at how many people would rather have a Zero 5 than a ZX 3. And then browse around the Legends 3 Devroom, and see how many Zero fanboys are advocating for Zero to appear in Legends 3, some to the point of insisting that he could possibly still be alive after all this time.

    ReplyDelete
  72. *Sigh* At this rate, what with every single series having haters, I'm starting to believe that there are no 'best' series.

So, am I a bad person that I happen to like BOTH Battle Network AND Zero series? I'm sure people here would say that I am.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @ Anon who I replied to last:

Oh, one other thing. While I can't speak for everyone, I'm pretty sure I have a good enough idea of how the Network Timeline fanbase works to say the following...

Most of us Network Timeline fans don't want EXE to recieve a new entry, as it's wholly unrealistic and it actually ended with dignity, which is more than what anyone can say for many of the Robotic Timeline games. X especially.

Most of us Network Timeline fans have accepted the possibility that Star Force 3 was the last of the series as well.

What most of us want is a new Network Timeline game. And really, only the most selfish and asshole-ish people (or the purists who believe the franchise should only cater to their very own needs, although they are basically one and the same anyays) here would be opposed to such a thing, now that Legends 3 is actually being developed.

At this point, the development of a new Network Timeline game wouldn't threaten the development chances of your precious Robotics Timeline games. (And the Network games never did - I do love how during the EXE era, most people blamed EXE for the alleged downfall of the Classic and X series, while very few batted an eye at IntiCreates working on the Zero series.)

It's to be assumed that such a series would be handled by the Network team. (Unless you're expecting another Legends game immediately following Legends 3, but the possibility of that happening remains to be seen.)

Seriously. Have any of you guys seen any Network Timeline fans ragging on Mega Man 10, Zero Collection, or even the late Mega Man Universe for the lack of serious development on the Network Timeline? Last time I checked, Mega Man Universe got far more hatred from its very own Classic fanbase, and people who wanted X9 and ZX3 to be developed instead. I even recall seeing a few Legends fans that joined in the hate train there until Legends 3 was announced.

If you guys want to blame someone for the lack of development on Robotics Timeline games like X9 and ZX3, go blame IntiCreates. Don't blame the Network Team who probably wouldn't live up to the hype should they be forced to work on your precious Robotic Timeline games, and definitely don't blame us Network Timeline fans either. That line of logic implies hatred of us for simply existing.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @ Anon 25: Excuse me but you are being rude.

For one, you don't know FOR SURE that this is a prank, though granted the odds are stacked against it being real. It's unlikely but not 100% out of the question. You have no need to call people morons (implied by tone). Being a bit naive or gullible is not a totally bad thing.

At any rate you are being ridiculously unsympathetic and completely egocentric. You love ZX and X9, great for you. Pray, hope, and dream for it to come true, it IS possible. But how DARE you scald people for not wanting what YOU want.

Your opinion of the fans of EXE is completely valid; though admittedly I disagree with and believe it to be an overgeneralization. Are there people who complained? Absolutely. But you would be insane to say the same has not happened with each series at some interval in time.

Lastly, you need to be stating opinions as OPINIONS; not facts. The way you said "Zero was way better and you don't see fans bitching and whining and begging for a new game" implies fact as opposed to opinion. Yes it is a very popular game. But is it the best? Depends on the individual.

In the future I ask that you be more respectful of other fans when posting your opinion. It IS possible to disagree with a group without turning into an obnoxious jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @That one anon: Are we supposed to take you seriously? You seem awfully trololololy.

    ReplyDelete
  76. "People, this is an April Fools joke. I can't believe some of you are so guillible you actually BELIEVE this.

I can say 100% sure that quite a few megaman fans will disagree with Zero being better the BN, and SF better then BN.

Also, yeah, Most guys should know its a joke. Thats why I kinda hinted at "lots of news lately eh"? It's normally never going to happen with about 3-4 pieces of news in one day, one regarding info, the next one regarding said info was about a canceled game.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hmmm. This looks like a promising contest, but I'm not even sure if this even real.

This might be an original kind of Rockman game with no sequel would be really interesting. But the concept of using bosses based on animals is getting a bit receptive. 4 Rockman series did that idea. And I do admit. It's getting old.
I doubted if MM10 is real, and yet it did happened.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Now that this has been officially revealed as fake, Protodude sit down it's time for a lesson:

    tact –noun
    1.
a keen sense of what to say or do to avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations.

Announcing a fake contest for a fake Mega Man game immediately after one is canceled is not having any tact at all. Even Mega Man Network had the decency not to do a fake game and Rockman PM which has done fake games pretty much every year for several years didn't this year.

What I am saying is you really should not have done this. The fan base was already reeling from the Universe cancellation you should have had the common sense to realize it would have been in your best interest as a site owner not to annoy the fan base further.

You should not be surprised if you lose a good portion of your reader base from this farce.

    ReplyDelete
  79. ^
    WHOA. Lighten up, man.

It's April Fool's, christ. Besides, NO ONE CARED ABOUT MEGAMAN UNIVERSE.

If it were Legeneds 3, then yes, I'm certain PD wouldn't have done this.

"f you get fooled today, laugh about it! There are too many wet blankets with poop in their pants that don't like to have fun"

"Because certainly the internet is so damn serious the other 364 days of the year."

    ReplyDelete
  80. @Anon: "Reeling from the Universe cancellation."

Uh, yeah, you might want to take a look at the comments in that post. They're celebrating it's cancellation.

Also, shut up. It's April Fool's, have some freaking fun.

    U MAD?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Clearly, one Anon here can't have any fun and is most certainly butthurt by the fact this was a joke.

What's wrong with a fake game? Besides, the game was vague to begin with so it's not like PD blatant announced X9 or ZX3.

    Crawl back under your bridge.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Anon spouting the "tact" crap:

Did you even look at the post closely? there is tact and it relied on the 25th anniversary rumor, which hit the net BEFORE MMU. Therefore, if taken at face value, this could have seemed very legit.

I don't see what's so bad about this. In fact, we all get a kick out of the fake game annoucnments and the fact that p-dude did it while no one else did is quite nice; nostalgic, even, as it harkens back to a simpler time when the fanbase didn't have their panties in a wad about everything.

    ReplyDelete
  83. April Fool's is SERIOUS BUSINESS. Or so it seems. Whatevs, Protodude will always be my number 1 go-to source for Mega Man info.

    ReplyDelete
  84. @Butthurt Anon babbling about Tact: WHOA, man. Take it easy, it's just a joke. Serious business much? If you got your hopes up then it's your fault, since it was April Fools an' shit.

    TL;DR: Stop the drama.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @ "tact" anon:

Whoa, dude. Whoa. Take a chill pill before stuff starts being flung across the internet.

But yeah. "Reeling"? Define reeling: not cheering and celebrating, that's for sure.

While the joke came at a bad time, thanks to Capcom, this was in no mean meant to annoy the fanbase. It was to celebrate an already annoying albeit somewhat funny holiday and still have SOME fun before someone like you comes along to be a wet blanket about it. Also, it's his blog, so he'll post what he deems necessary and/or relevant.

And screw tact, it's April Fools Day. So shut up and enjoy it/what's left of it already.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I wanted to keep from posting a comment just from looking silly if anything happened either way. I felt pretty sure it was an April Fools' prank but I wasn't too sure until the thing about the EXE3 contest (I thought it was strange that the navis shown were all from EXE2). I'm surprised this went over so well, and I'm glad you actually did your prank on April Fools'. Most people do it ahead of time nowadays because they think people expect it on April 1st but really that's become so typical the reverse is probably true.

    ReplyDelete
  87. To the anon who thinks I'm this purist who thinks network continuity sucks and robotics own all:

I loved the games. Do you know what I hate? EXE fanboys who whined to the point they ruined StarForce because they want a series that's already over to get a sequel. Zero fanboys didn't ruin ZX, either, it was the EXE fanboys in Japan wanting more BN.

And I was proven right by Protodude on the fact it was an April Fools joke. Only an idiot would be able to miss that (read: Most posters here.)

If you're going to reply to this, then make sure you actually /get/ what I say. The last anon wasted two posts talking nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow.... one mention of EXE and everyone goes batshit....

  89. @ April 2, 2011 12:14 AM Anon:

I'm not an Anon, I didn't post as an Anon, and it certainly seems like you just skimmed over my post and missed the whole point.

While I am sorry that I misinterpreted your intent, I will not fully apologize. If you actually paid attention, you'd have seen my post up there where I knew this was an April Fools joke from the very start, and your latest post is just as asshole-ish as your previous.

I'm not the only one that attacked your previous post either, so that has to mean something.

    ReplyDelete
