Capcom Comments On Future Virtual Console Mega Man Releases

It's been pretty quiet on the Virtual Console front when it comes to Mega Man. Actually, come April 19th, it will be approximately one year since the last VC release, Mega Man 4. When can we expect Mega Man 5 and so on? In response to this very question on Friday's Ask Capcom Live, the Capcom crew had this to say:

"I don't know. Mega Man one though four were put online by the online group in Tokyo," said Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP strategic planning and business development. "I don't think Mega Man 5 or beyond are on route but the original four popped up at short notice so I wouldn't rule it out."

Following up on this response, Svensson returned with some additional details on the Ask Capcom forums:

"I answered this on the Ask Capcom stream on Friday... and my answer was, unfortunately, I don't know. VC projects (pure emulation ones, which don't require new development) don't show up in our usual product roadmap and often come to us with very short paths to market. I'm not aware of more projects headed to VC in general at this time. Again, that doesn't mean there aren't, but they aren't on my radar at the moment."

--------
Long story short, future Virtual Console releases aren't in the cards right now, but that may change upon short notice.

In the past, there was a bit of a pattern when it came to VC Mega Man releases. IIRC, Mega Man 1-3 released on the Virtual Console as a means to promote Mega Man 9, with MM4 coinciding closely with Mega Man 10's release. Seeing that there are no Wii-based Mega Man projects in the foreseeable future, I don't believe this strategy will apply for quite some time.

Best advice I can give: if you're hankering for some classic Mega Man action on Wii, pick up a copy of the GameCube version of Anniversary Collection. It's not that expensive nor too difficult to find. Otherwise, fingers crossed and hope for the best.

  1. you're recommending the one with the switched a and b? eww.
being a fanatic that already owned multiple copies of each of the games collected, i still bought anniversary collection for full retail as soon as it was released, and could not play it for more than 20 min, even for the extras i was so looking forward to.

  3. @Anonymous:

That probably wouldn't have been such a big deal had they actually given players an option to customize the controls.

  5. At least it's 10 games and some extras for the price of one, despite the few issues.

  8. The VC is really lacking in my opinion, and not just Megaman...I've wanted Super Mario All-Stars, Battletoads, Yoshi's Island, etc...I thought it could replace my dead NES, but it never did.

On the plus side, I have the Anniversary Collection and X collection for PS2, so at least I'm good with Megaman.

  9. You are stupid, Capcom! Thanks a lot! Thanks for getting an advantage of people's mone on VC Megaman 1-4 and now you are not going to make them anymore for VC. THANKS A LOT!

  10. @Anonymous #4:

I'm definitely looking forward to Mega Man 11. Universe? Not so much.

  11. Capcom, I am disappoint.
What does a guy have to do to have all NES and SNES Mega Man games on the Wii? It's bad enough that Nintendo continues to ignore Yoshi's Island, but this...

  12. You can bet that they're saving the remaining games to release for when they announce dates for Universe or Legends 3 (wishful thinking: 11 or a conclusion to the ZX series). I don't particularly care, I thought the Anniversary Collection was alright. There were some issues, but it wasn't the travesty people make it out to be.

  13. There is also the originals. They aren't THAT hard to find. And the Nes is cheap. REALLY CHEAP.

  14. Sadly it seems the WiiWare line has basically ruined Nintendo's interest in the Virtual Console part of things so even if Capcom suddenly decided they felt like it, it'd take eons before we saw any of it.

  15. I'm still waiting for my "Rockman & Forte" to show up on VC damn it! That game deserves some recognition.

I wonder why they're so slow at adding more Mega Man games. The anniversary collections are out of print, aren't they? Seems like a good time to cash in on some re-releases, no?

  16. It's not like you're restricted... There's also Complete Works on PSN (and then some, if you have a Japanese account).
Personally, I want to see how Mega Man 6 gets treated when it hits Virtual Console, as it never had a english release outside of the US; I won't be happy if it becomes a 600pt import. Then again, there's always another way.

  17. The Virtual Console in general pretty much died a year ago. Like the above poster said, once WiiWare really took off the Virtual Console was lucky to get 1 game a month in North America.

The real hope now is to bug capcom about Mega Man 1-V on Gameboy for the 3DS Virtual Console.

  18. Well that sucks but I don't own a wii so I guess it dosen't bother me that much.
Still using the older games just to promote the newer ones and then stopping seems lame in my opinion.
Makes me wonder whats going to happen after Legends 3 comes out.

  19. Virtual Console? Bah. Instead of it, release a MM collection for Wii with MM1-10 plus the 5 GB games, Power Battle & Fighters, MM&B, MMPU, Battle & Chase, RockBoard, Soccer, and SAR.
