MM and MMX Official Complete Works Out Next Week, Sample Pages

Matt Moylan, Managing Editor of Udon Entertainment, sends word that both Mega Man and Mega Man X Official Complete Works art books have shipped to comic book retailers, and will be available Wednesday, December 23rd!

As for regular bookstores and online vendors like Amazon, the release date is less precise; could be a few days earlier or a few days later, but comic book shops will have them in stock Wednesday.

As a special treat, Matt was also kind enough to pass along a handful of sample pages from both art books.  Hit the jump to have a gander!

  3. Mega to Rock? Fourth to Force Armor? Thank you, Udon. :)

  4. It should have been 'Fourth'. Alia named it such because it was a recreation of the 4th armor X acquired. 'Force' only makes sense if Alia had a sense for humor that relies on Engrish.

  5. When adapating it, I specifically pushed for us to use "Rock" and not "Mega," hoping fans would appreciate that. I'm glad one already does! :) (Thankfully Capcom approved the use of Rock, though, or all the pushing in the world wouldn't have mattered.)

I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on the entire books once they're on shelves!

  6. Whoa, a Silver Metal Devil? that would have been interesting. Though im glad they went with the black "Shadow" devil.

@Soultrigger: Force may sound catchier than Fourth, but it IS a mistranslation. it is FOURTH armor, and I would have appreciated some consistency there.

@Zan: Yeah, well, unfortunately, Force is catchier than Fourth. Force armor seems to sound cooler, and rolls off the tongue easier, so the fan misconception stuck to the, :P

  7. Sweet! They're using Rockman instead of Megaman! That just pushed me to buy the American version (already own the Japanese version.)

Hmmmm....According to Amazon, it's about $26 for the X book, so I'm assuming that it's around $26 for the Classic book. 26x2= 52, without tax, which is just about the same price I paid for the Japanese version. I remember the price tag saying $49, just don't remember if I paid the 8.75% tax on it or not. Didn't they say the American one is suppose to be cheaper?

  8. @ ShadowNeko

Wow, does it really matter that much if they use Mega Man or Rock Man to the point where that simple thing was what pushed the purchase of this book? That's kinda sad

  9. What's wrong with calling rockman, Megaman if this is being released in the US? Anyways, After seeing those pages, I definately have to add these books to my collection.

  10. @Anon1, I already have the JPN book. I already thinking of not buying it (and reading at the store if they have it) when it was announced. I already supported it by importing it. They say it's suppose to be cheaper than importing it, but as said in previous post, it would appear (unless Amazon gives a lower price for Classic book) it cost about the same price I paid for the JPN. I need motivation if I'm paying the same price since they said it would be cheaper.

  11. Well, the Bandai toy figures call it "4th Armor" (under Rockman X5), so you're most likely right, Zan. Seeing how the X3 armor is called Max Armor instead of just Third Armor, I would like to believe that in X4, the armor is called Force and not simply Fourth. If we're supposed to be able to distinguish between X4's Force and X5's Fourth Armor, I wish the developers had commented on the naming. This all started because of the confusion over how to translate katakana.

  12. They changed MWN (Mega World Numbers) to WWN (Wily Wars Numbers). I guess others will include DLN (DRN), SDN (SRN) and MKN (RKN).

  13. Hey guys. Matt here from UDON.

On some of the naming conventions used, we generally went with the official US versions on most things. Of course there are many items we approached on case by case basis.

While mostly we called our hero "Mega Man" we refer to his casual mode as "Rock", as this is by far the fan preferred name over "Mega". Also the whenever the creators refer to him as simply "Rock", we preserved that as well.

The original Japanese game logos (many of which say "Rockman" in plain English) were left in out of necessity. Capcom unfortunately not longer has printable files for many the original English logos (many of which are 15-20 years old now). So rather than mix it up between english and Japanese, we kept it consistent and kept all the logos as Japanese. The English game names where applicable are included in plain text.

Hope that clears up some of our thinking! If MaverickHunterAsh (our Mega Man editor) has anything else to add on that he can jump in ;)

  15. So apparently they wrote the 4th armor as Foosu as in English 4th in katakana and some people decided to go with Force. I can see that happened. I guess it they had wanted to call it Force armor, it would have been in Kanji.

  16. The katakana word for fourth and force is the same. To me Force makes more sense.

  17. Alia's profile in the Japanese books states she named it after the "4th armor X acquired." There isn't really any question about which is correct.

Also, I believe "Force" only appears in the English X5 manual, which isn't exactly the epitome of correct translation. Remember that it also said "21XX" and "centuries fighting the Reploid War".

As for "Max Armor", that is simply a description that the model kit has the whole armor from that specific game. Those armors don't really have any names; that trend started with X5.
