TMMN's Operate Shooting Star Review

The Mega Man Network is featuring a nicely detailed review over Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star, which covers everything you could possibly ever want to know about the game -- and more. A portion of the review below:
"Now, there’s something I want to make clear right away about my impression of Operate Shooting Star. It is not a remake of MegaMan Battle Network. It IS MegaMan Battle Network, with some additional features thrown in. If you have played MegaMan Battle Network before, you have essentially played this game already. “Plus alpha” is a Japanese expression that roughly means “a little something extra,” and in Operate Shooting Star’s case the emphasis is on “a little.” I can’t say this is a bad game though, because I do like the original MegaMan Battle Network. But I cannot understand why this game needed to be made. It is truly disappointing just how little new content was put in this game when you consider the whole package....

"...In the end I can only recommend Operate Shooting Star to people who have never played the original MegaMan Battle Network, or to fans who are just really excited over Geo and other Star Force characters entering the game, however briefly it may be. And again, it’s not like Operate Shooting Star is a BAD game. It’s just hardly a new game, and I don’t think it lives up to the hype Capcom of Japan drove up for it."

  2. You know it's bad when even the hardcore fans are giving it poor reviews.

  3. I'd refrain from the swift and resounding "I told you so" I've been dying to unleash since OSS was released; but I'd be a fool to deprive myself of that right.

    Therefore,

    I TOLD YOU SO.

  4. Luckily I never played all the way through mmbn1 due to impossible internet navigation...worthwhile enough. but srsly capcom

  5. Well, look at that. That's surely NOT your average Mega Man hardcore fan who's reviewing OSS right there. And I'm sure P-dude saw that kind of stuff coming. I sure did.

The question is: will I play it? Yes, thanks to NO$GBA ¬¬.

  6. @Hiroki: You told us what? That it wasn't anything new? Yea, we got that. :P Nobody really disagreed with that.

  7. In 1999, nearly 12 years after the original Rockman 1 was released, Capcom began producing the Complete Works series on PS1. The NES had been dead for years and the games hadn't seen an updated release since Rockman Mega World (The Wily Wars). They added a few changed graphics, updated difficulty modes, challenges and features like Pocketstation games, a few remixed pieces of music and an enemy bestiary and art gallery. But overall, it was the original Rockman, with very unnoticable changes. It wasn't the full cost of a playstation game, though it was still on the high side for what was basically an NES game, and they probably could have fit 1-3 together on a disc if they wanted to.

I feel like OSS is a Rockman EXE Complete Works game. It's got a few new features, new modes, game tweaks. But this time, it might have been too soon. It could made more sense if the platform medium was dead and you couldn't just stick the original EXE game in your DS and play it... but you can. If they had waited until DSi completely took over Nintendo's portable market, getting rid of backwards compatibility, it would be much more welcome for what it is, a nostalgic blast that maintains its classic form from the past, with some cool new features. That's what I think, anyway.

  8. After being called a troll for the last couple of months for expressing the exact same sentiments about this game as TMMN's reviewer has this feels a bit cathartic.

  9. I agree completely with this review, this game didn't need to be made, well edited, it was already made8 years ago.

@last Anon, Rockman Complete Works at least had remixed music, OSS doesn't even have that

  10. CAPCOM ALREADY SAID THIS WAS A PORT,WHY THE HELL WHERE YOU EXPECTING A REMAKE?I'S LIKE BEING TOLD YOU'RE BEING GIVE A APPLE PIE,THEN GOING "But,I was expecting a cherry pie!" IT'S A VERY SILLY AND STUPID THING FOR YOU TO DO. AND THOSE WHO ARE SAYING " I told you it was going to be the same!" GUESS WHAT,SO DID CAPCOM.

    http://protodudesrockmancorner.blogspot.com/2009/07/rockman-exe-operate-shooting-star.html

RIGHT HERE,IT DESCRIBES IT AS A PORT WITH A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA.

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT WE GOT. A PORT,WITH A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA.

GOODNIGHT SIRS AND MADAMS,YOU LOSE THE GAME,AND I AWARD YOU NO POINTS.

    GOOD DAY!

  11. I get what you mean, C. We all knew this would be pretty barebones, but noooo, we have to like it no matter what.

  13. @CAPS Anon:

Dude, the whole "plus alpha" idea sucks. Buying OSS (which is technically MMBN1 with a little something extra) at the same price of a DS cart just shows you what Capcom has become lately. Let me just say it so people don't get the wrong idea:

The game doesn't suck. No. The whole point of making it is what sucks soooo hard. Thus, the whole point of buying it sucks.

God, why are some people still defending Capcom like they were making good Mega Man games lately or making us proud with decent games at least? Who or what are these Capcom fanboys? Capcom employees?!

Seriously. To everyone who thinks this game it's worth buying, STFU. Start playing true games and stop trying to impose your pathetic arguments on everyone.

Wow P-dude, and I was worrying about my first comment being too harsh xD. Free speech FTW!

  14. "Seriously. To everyone who thinks this game it's worth buying, STFU. Start playing true games and stop trying to impose your pathetic arguments on everyone." The exact same thing could be said for you, pal. So this isn't a true game because it was released before? That means none of the games in X Collection were either. (Collection had incentive for purchase, but the point remains the same. A re-released game isn't a non-game.)

This isn't just a Capcom thing, "alpha plus port" is a Japanese term, not a Capcomese term. So yea, maybe this game was just a cash-in, but it probably was meant to gauge interest in a revival. Just because you think it sucks doesn't mean YOU can impose that on US. It's the same for both sides. There's nothing wrong with people saying, "Wait and see." We waited and we saw, and we all agree that it was pretty sloppy.

Now everyone (including me) really needs to get off their high horses and just get along.

  15. Ugh...that's why I hate Battle Network/Star Force-related news. There's no point on starting a debate, because there's always a moronic fanboy passing by. And you know what happens when you try to debate with a fanboy. 'Nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Again, same could be said of you. You know what happens when you try to debate with a fanboy. The annoying debates happen on EXE news because people like you start it up. 'Nuff said.

  17. OSS sucked. Even some of the .EXE fanboys agree now. Can we leave .EXE in its coffin and move on now; or are you still going to insist Capcom goes Umbrella Corp. on the series? The .EXE fans bitched and whined enough to get a new game; and it sucked. Hard. How many more scenarios is it going to take before they figure out that their precious horse is dead; and they should stop beating it? Jeezes. It's getting as bad as those nutters who swear that Zero survived Ragnarok and Z5 is in development. :\

  18. "The .EXE fans bitched and whined enough to get a new game; and it sucked."

When did we get a new game? Why is it bitching when EXE fans do it but just nicely asking when fans of any other series do it?

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ C: There's a huge difference between simply telling everyone about what you think, and doing it while launching personal stealth insults at the same time.

    ---

"Why is it bitching when EXE fans do it but just nicely asking when fans of any other series do it?"

This is why I hate the concept of double standards.

So many people here don't understand this concept (or know about it but willfuly do not pay any attention to it in the hopes that nobody else here knows), so much so to the point in which I consider comments around here to be slowly heading towards the same level as arguments on YouTube.

Even before OSS was announced, I had already started to feel sorry for Protodude for having to deal with our crap.

@ Anon above previous Anon: And with that massive rant about double standards, I suppose I'll end with this, in the hopes of making people understand how contradictory the argument is (in which the vast majority of the people using this argument against the EXE series also happen to be the same ones advocating a X9):

How many more scenarios is it going to take before [X fans] figure out that their precious horse is dead; and they should stop beating it?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Poor Protodude. :( Sorry, but I gotta say this.

"There's no point on starting a debate, because there's always a moronic fanboy passing by."

That's the point. You're trying to start a debate where there doesn't need to be one. XD Of course people will answer inflammatory comments. So you're causing the frustrating arguments. I don't see many EXE fans crapping in X posts. By constantly saying EXE fans are stupid n00bs and not letting them rebut that statement, we're stuck with the reputation of nasty little buggers, but that reputation has no grounds. We can't argue against it, because then it's, "HA! SEE? THEY BITCH ALL THE TIME!" :( Catch 22! Why you got to hate so much? Let us enjoy what few crappy ports we can!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Alilatias:

When did I mention X9 in my post? Never. Even if I had; what scenarios? There have been no OSS scenarios in the X series. We have yet get a plus-alpha remake of any X games. I personally couldn't care less if the X series continues or not; but if you're going to lecture someone about double-standards; make sure you're not using any yourself.

While we're on the subject of beating dead horses; .EXE and Zero are the only series that have actually come to a close. They are the only true "dead" series. Zero ended when Zero died permanently (for once); and .EXE ended at the end of BN6 when the words "END SERIES" or whatever flashed across the screen. Just about everything else can be very easily added to; because it has had no closure.

  22. Sigh... Oh, well, at good thing I don't own Battle network 1...WHY COULDN'T CAPCOM SAVE THEM SOME GREIF (SRRY I CAN'T SPELL TODAY) AND ACTUALY PUT EFFORT?!? HAVEN'T THEY NOTICED THAT OTHER COMPANIES WHO WORK ON THEIR STUFF ARE ACTUALY BIG IN AMERICA?!?
